One of these light oils, benzol, exhibits in a remarkable degree the number and value of the coal-tar productions. Fifty years ago, in 1825, Faraday discovered, while experimenting on coal-tar, the substance now known as benzol. Twenty years after, a French chemist found that when benzol was treated with nitric acid, a substance called nitro benzol resulted, having the odor of bittero prevent its passing between the rollers, so that the barrel is drawn off the mandrel.
