The meeting at Chester, on Saturday last, was well attended by the people of the county.
Owing to the short notice, and the accumulation of business on Saturdays among people in cities, there were but few from either Richmond or Petersburg.
The meeting, therefore, was purely a county meeting.
The meeting was called to order, and the Rev. Chas. W. Friend was appointed Chairman, and James L. Snead, Secretary.
At 12 M., precisely, the flag was raised by Mr. Travers Daniel, of Petersburg, who, having some experience as an "old salt," fixed it "sailor fashion"--that is, all in a lump, and hauled it to the top of the pole.
The cord securing it was then pulled by Mrs. Poindexter, and the breeze spread it out amid the rapturous cheering of the men and applause of the ladies.
The flag had been prepared by Mr. B. F. Luiday, the proprietor of the hotel, and while it is in all respects after the model of the flag of the Southern Confederacy, yet, the hope that Virginia will soon
Fatal affray in Texas.
--An affray occurred in Texana, Jackson county, on Wednesday, 6th inst. between Mr. Woolfolk on one side and Messrs. C. M. Flournoy and R. S. Flournoy on the other.
Several shots were exchanged with effect, the first-named gentleman being killed, and the elder Flournoy severely wounded.
The Grand Jury being in session at the time, a bill of indictment for murder was returned against the Flournoys.

Death by Drowning.
--A young man named Thomas Nead, about eighteen years of age, was drowned off the steamer Lizzie Martin, on the 6th inst., near Parkersburg, Va. The deceased, who could not swim, accidentally walked overboard, and was carried by the current past the boat, and drowned before assistance could reach him. He was an orphan.
