TLC Mission

The Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) creates and disseminates innovative educational initiatives for instructors across all levels at Sam Houston State University. We support interdisciplinary collaborations to further the scholarship of teaching and learning. Collectively these efforts work to elevate the university's legacy of teaching excellence while energizing instructors to invigorate student success.

TLC Vision

The Teaching and Learning Center pursues our goals through three ideals: support, create, and disseminate. 

Support: The Center will strengthen organizational investment in teaching while utilizing the wide range of instructional resources available on campus. We will effectively extend the scope of the univerisity's legacy of teaching excellence through partnerships with peer institutions and the greater teaching and learning community.

Create: The Center will create innovative and evidence-based programming that is responsive to campus needs. We will develop varied and flexible resources for instructors in order to cultivate a community surrounding teaching and learning on Sam Houston State University's campus and beyond.

Disseminate: The Center will disseminate a variety of readily accessible resources that support the teaching and learning community. Through our annual conference, online offerings, workshops, and grant funding we will highlight and elevate ongoing campus research and development to inform high impact practices in higher education.

The Teaching and Learning Center strives to align with Sam Houston State University's values

Student Success and Support: We provide professional development in and fund research on student-centered and active leaning to aid instructors in increasing student success.

Academic Excellence: We focus on evidence-based best practices in teaching aimed at increasing academic excellence.

Service and Community Engagement: We support the incorporation and assessment of high-impact practices in partnership with other campus centers and connect with the larger teaching and learning network through participation in regional and national events and contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Inclusive Excellence: We integrate evidence-based practices to advance a community of belonging in our professional development programs and seek to fund a wide range of research to establish an inclusive community of scholars and educators.

Collaborative Environment: We provide a supportive, empowering, and culturally responsive working environment in our office and in all our programs.

Creativity and Innovation: We fund research and professional development opportunities in support of cutting-edge, creative teaching and innovation in the classroom.
