In case you missed the official announcement because of all the hoopla coming out of VMworld this year, allow me to trumpet the news about the return of the VMware Fling Contest.
Yes, it's that time of year once again... the 2014 VMware Fling Contest returns for its third year. Last year, there were more than 200 ideas submitted, and the winning idea was a vCenter Server to vCenter Virtual Appliance Converter. A prime example of a cool and useful Fling.
Don't know what we're talking about? No problem. VMware is inviting all community members to submit ideas for
creating something new called VMware Flings (free software tools developed by VMware engineers that
provide functionality that enhances or complements existing VMware
products, or explores new ideas). VMware plans to build the winning Fling idea and release it
back to the community on the Flings website
(http://labs.vmware.com/flings)
as a freely available tool.
Here's what VMware announced:
For the contest, VMware invites you to submit ideas for new Flings
that you’d love to see built. In case you’re wondering, yes, you’re
allowed to submit as many ideas as you like! Idea submissions will be
accepted starting on Monday August 25, 2014. The last day for submitting
ideas will be Friday November 14, 2014. In addition to allowing you to
submit your own ideas, the contest site also lets you comment on and
like other ideas.
Our VMware judging panel will review all the submissions and will declare the winner on December 14, 2014.
So as you can see, there's plenty of time to get your thinking caps on in order to come up with a new, fresh idea.
Not sure where to begin? Do you have an idea on how certain
features or
functionality could be improved upon within a VMware virtualization
environment? Is there an application or tool that you've been waiting
for that will make your everyday life at work that much easier? Is
there a common, repetitive task that you wish could be automated to make
your virtualization management more streamlined? Or do you need
assistance with decision making in your environment? If so, write it down and submit it. Remember, if you're having a problem or need some added assistance with something in your environment, chances are pretty good that someone else is looking for that same type of help.
Want to learn more? Head over to the official Fling Contest pages where you can read the FAQ or submit your ideas or view submissions.
And keep in mind, the grand prize winner will receive a free pass to VMworld 2015 in the U.S. or
Europe -- winners choice! How cool is that?
