'Regressive and warmed-over': Katy Perry's new album gets lukewarm reviews

Katy Perry's new single, WOMAN'S WORLD, was released today to reviews which are predominately very unfavourable.

Perry hasn't released new music since her 2020 album Smile, which peaked at number 5 both the US and UK album charts. She came under fire ahead of the release of her current single, because it's co-produced by Lukasz Gottwald, otherwise known as Dr Luke.

Dr Luke was accused of sexual assault by singer Kesha in 2014. No conviction has ever been brought against him, but other artists who Dr Luke had previously worked with, including Pink and Kelly Clarkson, have publicly stated that they would not work with Dr. Luke again.

In addition to criticism of Perry for working with Dr. Luke, there has also been an unfavourable response to the quality of the single. The Guardian called it 'regressive, warmed-over hell.'

The review in Pitchfork, a music publication, reads: ' If Perry was willing to cop the built-in bad press of making a song about women’s lib with an alleged abuser, shouldn’t the song at least be a banger? Instead, it’s unfathomably tepid, irritating at best.'
