Restoring Prehistoric Juvenile Gulf Sturgeon from Louisiana to Florida
Little is understood about the behavior, location, and habitat preferences of juvenile Gulf sturgeon.
The USGS Arkansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is leading new research on restoring prairie grasslands with prescribed burning in the Loess Canyons of Nebraska. Private landowners have used prescribed burning for nearly two decades to address the greatest threat to their working grasslands, the expansion of trees into grasslands (woody encroachment). This is the first study showing how long-term management across an entire region or ecosystem can reverse the impacts that trees have on grasslands and on birds that depend on intact, resilient, and tree-free grasslands.

Tom Kwak’s day job is actually fisheries science — he’s an applied ecology professor and leader of the U.S. Geological Survey’s North Carolina Fish and Wildlife Cooperative Research Unit.
Kwak usually volunteers to relocate swarms in a zone inside the Beltline. But he knew the airport bees were in a precarious location and wanted to move them before someone called an exterminator.
“It’s important that we protect the pollinators of our plants and food crops,” he says, pointing to his entomology colleagues’ research and extension work on the many pests and diseases that threaten native bees and European honeybees.

In conjunction with the Cook Inlet PhotoID Project and federal agencies, the Washington Unit is aiming to learn more about the fundamental factors that drive changes in beluga whale population dynamics, specifically what affects the rates at which individuals survive and reproduce. Understanding this piece of the puzzle is critical to future conservation and recovery efforts and will help determine the viability and resilience of this population to the persistent human activities and ongoing climatic changes occurring in the region.
