Mountain Classroom Theme Decor Ideas for Back to School

Mountain Classroom Theme Decor Ideas for Back to School

When it comes to transforming your classroom into an adventure, mountain-filled learning zone, I love to go all out! One reason is that having a mountain-themed classroom brings a sense of calm and serenity to your room. We can all use more of that in our classrooms!

Using a mountain classroom theme can really elevate your classroom atmosphere, promoting the idea that this school year, your students can overcome any obstacle or mountain they face! Including the whole class in this adventurous theme strengthens your classroom community right from the start of the school year!

Even our "big kids" in upper elementary love the thrill of an engaging, dynamic classroom mountain-themed environment. A mountain theme creates an exciting backdrop and promotes hard work and focus. Just like real mountaineers, students will learn to tackle obstacles, persevere through tough tasks, and celebrate their achievements at the summit.

Get ready for the back-to-school season with these easy-to-implement ideas focused on mountain-themed classroom decor that will make your classroom feel like a mountaintop adventure. Try all these or any combination to make your classroom an exciting place where students are eager to climb to new heights of learning and overcome any challenge that comes their way!

1. Start with an Introduction

mountain theme meet the teacher letter

Tell your students that YOU will help them take learning to new heights this year with a simple yet meaningful teacher note that reflects your classroom theme and motto and introduces you to your new students!

Keep the theme going through the year by using a ! I love using a newsletter to let parents know what learning has taken place this week, let them know about important upcoming dates, and other important classroom information! Using a simple newsletter allows parents to feel that they are connected to you, their child, and the classroom.

Keep the communication with families and caregivers and the mountain theme going all year long with a weekly class newsletter! They are easy to use and help to keep your communication and relationships with parents and families strong!

2. Coordinate Your Room

When it comes to coordination, I focus on a few key elements of the room. I try not to overdo it, but I do want key parts of our room to reflect our mountain and perseverance theme!

Here are a few key places that I make sure to include mountains...
🌄name tags

mountain theme slideshow open house google slides

I love tying in my classroom theme to our open house night. For Meet the Teacher night, I use a mountain theme slideshow. The parents love the theme and always give compliments about how well everything ties together.  When the lights are low and the mountains are on the screen, it is a nice way to bring together your Meet the Teacher letter, bulletin board displays, name tags, and banners.

💡Teacher tip: You can use the slideshow template that you create for the open house for your classroom procedure slides, too! Just make two different copies so that you can customize each slide for the different audiences.

4. Inspire with Motivational Bulletin Boards

mountain theme bulletin boards

Over the last few years, I have found that incorporating positive and motivational quotes into our morning meeting time and classroom has a positive outcome for the kids. They love to read and learn new quotes related to different themes. Oftentimes, they repeat the quotes at appropriate times, which is awesome to see!

I use different themes and leave them up for a month or so. We do spend time discussing them a bit during morning meetings. Sometimes, the kids illustrate the quotes or write a reflection about them, but I have found the biggest impact is made just through discussing them and seeing them displayed each day!

I rotate through these six themes, which last us through the year!

🌄 Growth Mindset
🌄 Class Community
🌄 Reading
🌄 Kindness
🌄 Empathy
🌄 Mindfulness

5. Send Your Students Positivity Notes

mountain classroom theme

This is fun and simple to do!

I print the positive quote posters four to a page to create instant notecards! These are very motivational for the kids, especially on days when we have tests or a crazy schedule. All you have to do is print four to a page, cut them, and write a quick message on the back. The kids love to see these on their desks and save them, too.

As the year progresses, I also print out cards for the kids to write positive messages to each other. I either assign who they write to or have them exchange with a partner to ensure that each student gets a note. This is especially fun to do during testing season!

6. Mountain Theme Accent Ideas

Bring your classroom to life with small mountain theme touches like bulletin board paper, bulletin board borders, accent pillows for your classroom library, and matching bins!

Be sure to tie the idea of perseverance and a growth mindset to your mountain decor theme by reading some of my favorite mountain-themed books aloud! You do not have to read these all at once or all at the beginning of the year. Instead, weave throughout your year to keep the theme going!

📖Take a look at all the books here: Mountain Book List

By incorporating a mountain theme of hard work and perseverance, you will be creating an experience your students will always remember. Remember, it's not just about the decorations—it's about fostering a spirit of determination and excitement in your students. Try out these ideas or mix and match to create a space where your students are eager to climb to new heights of learning and overcome any challenge that comes their way.

Happy teaching, and here's to a fantastic school year filled with growth and adventure!

7 Ice Breakers for the First Day of School in the Upper Elementary Classroom

7 Ice Breakers for the First Day of School in the Upper Elementary Classroom

There is so much to plan during back-to-school season.

From curriculum to meet the teacher night and everything in between. That is why I love to use these tried and true simple icebreakers with my upper elementary students. Not only are they fun and engaging, but they are unique, so chances are your students have not done them before!

There are many benefits to using icebreakers in the classroom

Icebreaker activities can help create a positive classroom environment, foster connections, and build a sense of community among students. Some benefits include...

  • Students immediately begin to feel comfortable in the classroom
  • You get to know and build relationships with students from day one
  • Students get to know each other quickly
  • Your classroom community is beginning to form

Read on to learn about 5 simple icebreakers that you can use in your upper elementary classroom this back-to-school season! These activities are designed to encourage participation, develop communication skills, and make the transition back to school smooth and enjoyable.

1.  Four Corners

Four Corners is a fun icebreaker game to help elementary students get to know each other better. It's a simple and interactive activity that promotes movement and social interaction in the classroom.

  • Before starting the game, assign each of the four corners of the classroom a number (1, 2, 3, 4). You can use 4 pieces of colorful construction paper with each number 1-4 to display the numbers clearly in each corner.
  • Have all the students gather in the center of the classroom.
  • Display a getting to know you question on your smartboard or simply read aloud a question to strengthen listening skills.
  • Pick simple questions on topics that the kids love to talk about, like favorite season, favorite sport, favorite drink...just topics to get the kids chatting in the corners!
  • Display four choices, each matching a number 1-4. (what is your favorite season 1= winter, 2 = fall, 3 = spring, 4= summer)
  • Students answer the question in their heads and go to the corner with the number matching the selected answer.
  • Repeat the process for each new question you ask!

Four Corners is a fantastic icebreaker game that will help energize the classroom and create a friendly atmosphere, helping students to see all they have in common with their new classmates.

2.  What is Your Name? What is your initial?

I LOVE completing a variety of name activities at the beginning of the year, even in upper elementary classrooms. I love to read the Name Jar and complete name reflection activitiesGrab the free name activity here.

A fun twist on name activities that you can use to decorate your room is the My Name is activity. For this activity, simply...

  • Go around the room and have the students say, My name is ____, it starts with the letter ___, and the letter ____ is for____.
  • Example: My name is Jeaning, it starts with the letter J, and J is for jumpy!
  • Whatever word they select should represent a bit about them. It is a jumping-off point before the next activity.
  • Once all students share, pass out big bubble letters, giving each student the letter that their first name starts with.
  • Students then decorate the letter with pictures, words, phrases, magazine clippings, and crayons to represent them. Have them cut them out and then proudly display them around your room.
  • This is a fun in class or at home project for the first month of school

Go one step further and have each student share their letter and explain different elements that they used to decorate it.

Grab free bubble letters to try out this activity!

3.  Same, Same, But Different Read Aloud

Bust out the Venn diagrams for a fun and interactive reading of this picture book! This book follows two young pen pals, one lives in America and the other lives India as they learn about each other and realize how they are the same, but different. This book perfectly celebrates recognizing each others' differences and similarities...que the Venn diagram!

Have a big stack of Venns copied and ready to go for some "Speed Venn Diagramming." Circulate the kids around the room until they can complete a Venn diagram for every new classmate.

Go one step further and reread this book for reading, writing, and word work lessons on:

✅ Reading: Comparing and Contrasting

✅ Writing: Personification

✅ Word Work: Decoding Multi-Syllabic Words

✅ Back to School Focus: Building Friendships

Take a look a the interactive read-aloud pack HERE.

4. Teacher Quiz

The kids get a kick out of having their "first test" on the first day of school when that test is all about their teacher! It is fun, easy, and the kids love it!

  • Create a T/F quiz about yourself with a mix of interesting tidbits that the kids can relate to.
  • I use about ten questions. (see the template here)
  • Have the kids take the quiz and then go over all the questions.
  • Engage the kids in discussions about your facts to see if you share anything in common with them!
  • Go one step further and have the kids write a sentence about themselves on the back and then ask YOU if you think it is true or false.

The kids love learning about what they have in common with their new favorite teacher!

5. Two Truths and a Lie

"Two Truths and a Lie" is a classic icebreaker activity that encourages students to share interesting facts about themselves while trying to trick their peers. Here's how to implement it:

  • Divide the class into small groups or pairs.
  •  Instruct each student to think of two true statements and one false statement about themselves.
  • One by one, students share their three statements with their group without revealing which statement is false.
  • The group discusses and tries to identify the false statement for each student.
  • After a few rounds, encourage students to share the false statement and explain the truths to get to know one another better.

This activity helps students get acquainted with their classmates and develop critical thinking and listening skills.

6. Find Someone Who

"Find Someone Who" is an interactive icebreaker activity that encourages students to communicate, mingle, and discover commonalities among their peers. Here's how to use this idea:

  • Distribute a "Find Someone Who" worksheet or create a grid on the board.
  • Provide a list of statements or characteristics, such as "Find someone who has a pet" or "Find someone who enjoys reading."
  • Instruct students to walk around the classroom and find classmates matching the criteria.
  • Students can ask questions and discuss whether their peers meet the criteria.
  • Once students find someone who fits the statement, they can sign or write their name in the corresponding box on the worksheet or board.
  • When students complete all the boxes, they are done! Bonus points for those who finish first!

This activity promotes active participation, communication, and collaboration while encouraging students to find shared interests or experiences among their peers.

about me bag for the first day of school activity

7. About Me Bag

The "About Me Bag" activity allows students to express their individuality, interests, and aspirations through a creative and visual project. Here's how to give it a try:

  • Provide each student with a picture of a brown paper bag or an actual lunch bag
  • Instruct students to create a collage using magazine cutouts, drawings, and written descriptions that represent themselves, or you can have the students fill the bag with three items that represent themselves.
  • Encourage students to include elements such as their favorite hobbies, aspirations, favorite books, or places they have visited.
  • Once the bags are complete, allow each student to share their collage with the class, explaining the meaning behind their chosen elements.
  • Hang the collages around the classroom as a visual representation of the diverse personalities and interests within the class.

This activity not only allows students to express themselves creatively but also provides an opportunity for their peers to learn more about each other.

Icebreaker activities are valuable tools for establishing a positive and inclusive classroom environment at the beginning of the school year. By implementing these simple icebreakers, you can help upper elementary students connect with their peers, develop communication skills, and create a welcoming classroom community.

These activities set a positive tone for the year ahead, laying the foundation for a successful and engaging academic journey.

4 Kindness Bulletin Board Ideas Upper Elementary Classrooms

Kindness Display and Decor for the Classroom

When it comes to kindness in the classroom there can never be enough lessons, read alouds, activities, or bulletin board displays!

If you have followed me for any amount of time, than you know that teaching and bringing kindness into the classroom is an important part of my teaching life. I love to dive deep into what kindness looks like during morning meeting times, read as many picture books with kindness themes as possible, and catch kindness taking place in my classroom community in authentic, meaningful ways.

Displaying kindness quotes and creating kindness bulletin boards are two ways that you can easily bring kindness in your classroom and set the tone for your community of learners that kindness is important to you and the classroom environment.

Here are some of my favorite kindness bulletin boards that I love to leave up all year long!

1. Kindness Rules

kindness class rules and expectation poster set

When it comes to classroom expectations, kindness is always my number one focus. By displaying these simple kindness rules and expectations right from day one, it is clear to students that being kind is a big part of our classroom community. To make sure it is clear how important it is to our classroom home, we all sign the kindness rules as a kindness classroom pledge. I love displaying the pledge as an important reminder for students and all who enter our room.

2. Seasonal: Kindness Through the Year

kindness posters and decor to use all year long

Since kindness is a big part of the classroom community, I make it a point to create an inspirational kindness bulletin board that changes with the seasons. I love decorating for the seasons and these posters are perfect to tie together kindness expectations and the changing seasons. The kids look forward to the new batch of kindness phrases each season!

3. Words of Wisdom: Kindness Can Move Mountains

be kind bulletin board display mountain theme

Motivational kindness quotes are a great way to bring kindness into your classroom and spark meaningful discussions about being kind. I love using this mountain theme to really bring home the concept that kindness can move mountains. That phrase becomes our class mantra and plays an important part of our positive classroom environment.

4. Student-Created Kindness Posters

Once students realize how important kindness is and how proudly it is displayed in your classroom, they begin to come up with their own kindness catch phrases. Once students create their own kindness quotes you can use those to display around your room and to kick off morning meeting discussions, too!

Want to get started with kindness in your classroom right now? Grab these free kindness posters and let your students create kindness quotes that you can display!

BONUS IDEA: Kindness Alphabet

When I was moved from teaching third graders to fifth graders I knew I had to up my alphabet game! That is why I created these cursive kindness alphabet posters! The kids LOVE them! They are a great way to increase kindness, empathy, and community all year long.

Displaying kindness rules, expectations, and inspirational quotes is a small thing that makes a big impact. Doing this helps students to understand how important kindness is to you and the classroom community. Students truly do take in the message and begin to show kindness in all that they do!

6 Bulletin Board Ideas to Leave Up All Year Long in Your Classroom

6 Bulletin Board Ideas to Leave Up All Year Long in Your Classroom

When it comes to classroom decor, I am all about making sure that it is meaningful!  If it is on my walls, then it must serve a purpose in addition to decorating the space. That purpose might be to teach a concept, introduce important vocabulary, keep students on track, or celebrate student achievements and work.

No matter what the purpose is, the decor in my classroom is always meaningful, purposeful, and intentional. It serves double duty as an educational tool and colorful decor.

Here are some of my favorite ways to both decorate the classroom and provide value for students. The best part is that these instructional decor ideas are ones that you can leave up all year long to help students succeed and save you the time and work of changing out your bulletin boards every month!

Anchor Charts

anchor chart simple bulletin board idea

I love designating one bulletin board as the anchor chart bulletin board. This bulletin board is one that changes with instruction. After creating anchor charts with students during a lesson, I hang them in this space. The basic bulletin board stays the same, the only thing you do is change out the anchor charts! You can leave anchor charts in this space for topics that kids still need support with or change them out with each new unit. I love this bulletin board because it gives all subjects a chance to be spotlighted!

Kindness DOES Count

positive bulletin board idea kindness be kind display

There is no bulletin board in my classroom that is more important than this one! Kindness really does count and a bulletin board like this one really does make a difference! These kindness expectations are a staple in my classroom, but I also go one step further. Since we celebrate kindness all year long, I have a smaller bulletin board that I use to display seasonal kindness quotes that kids love! When the kids see these positive messages day after day for the entire school year, they begin to put the concepts and ideas into action. So yes, teaching kindness really does count!

Reading Genres

simple bulletin board ideas for classroom library

I really do love decor that serves a purpose and this reading genre display is displayed in the classroom library and is always being used by the kids. It not only helps students select new books and genres to read, but it helps to keep our classroom library tidy! #teacherwin

Looking to stock your classroom library with more than these posters? Read this post to find out how to get books for your library!

Grammar and Punctuation

simple bulletin board idea for teachers

Another staple in the classroom is these grammar/parts of speech posters! I also display punctuation posters. The kids' eyes are always on them! When something you hang in the classroom helps students succeed and promotes accountability and independence you know it is meaningful and valuable. These posters truly help students throughout the editing and revising process, as well as everyday writing. It helps students to check their work on their own by giving them the information that they need to succeed.

The Writing Process

bulletin board ideas for school

If there is one time during the day that I want students to work independently, it is during the writing workshop time when I am making my way around the room and conferring with writers. With students are knee-deep in writing workshop or writing to a topic or prompt, these writing process posters help them every step of the way. You can also display each step of the process vertically to create a clip chart to hold students accountable by moving a clip with their name through the process. This will help you to understand where students are in their writing each day.

Reading Strategies

reading bulletin board ideas for the classroom

Do you have a bulletin board that you devote to reading? I do! I love having everything my students need to succeed during reading on one bulletin board, like these accountable talk stems! This is another bulletin board in my classroom that I do rotate out every once in a while. I like to change it with different reading units and strategies that we are learning, especially when we are kicking off reading and reading workshop in the classroom at the start of the year. These stems are perfect to leave up just as students are learning to talk with their peers about the books that they are reading.

Need More Bulletin Board Ideas? Try these!
