Ribbon Trick

1. Cut the ribbon in two sizes lengthwise: 7-1/2" & 3 "

2.  Place the shorter one on the top of  longer one.

3.Tie the ribbon as usual way.

4. Tie it tightly so it won't slip.

5. Flip it over.

6. Trim the edges and adhere to the card front..

Welcome to the Operation Write Home Memorial Day Weekend Blog Hop!  In hornor of and celebration of Memorial Day, I like to take this opportunity to say 'Thank you' to our heroes for their services for our country.

The theme of  card on this bloghop is MISSING YOU.  I made a Pinwheel card that is my first time to make.  You can find the tutorial how to make this Pinwheel card at the OWH Stars & Stamps Blog.  I added a couple of photos below to show you how to adhere the two large squares to each other at right angles to make the base for the pinwheel.

Series of Tips for OWH Memorial Day Bloghop - Saturday, May 28, 2011

• Taking Photos for a stack of cards

I used to have a small photo studio to take a couple of cards at once.  You can see a tutorial how to make a lightbox at OWH S&S Blog HERE.  Since I needed  to take a stack of cards after the OWH Cardmaking Party, I came up with a wider lengthwise photo studio as below.  I used six of 12"x12" colored cardstocks.  I didn't tape them but let them stand along each other so that I can alternate if necessary with a different color. Lighting is important. OTTLite is the best.

• Creating Clouds Background

I created this clouds background by using a 2-3/8" scalloped circle punchout as a template. I sponged about one quarter of scalloped circle each time and move the position.

• Create a stained glass/mosaic look with a homemade background stamp

I have seen this technique long time ago.  I wanted to try with a leftover rubber stamp set. If you want to see the video tutorial from the Splitcoaststampers HERE.  I cut out the leftover rubber stamp set in to small pieces and mounted on a wooden block. On top of the stamped image, I stamped this mosaic background stamp with Versamark stamp pad and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. Then rubbed stamp ink on the embossed surface.  Cleaned it with paper towel.

• Create a frame with leftover clear mount stamp set

I happened to have this leftover clear mount stamp set and created a frame.  I was so excited.  It looks like old TV set, doesn't it?  I coated the birds with 3-D Lacquer but it doesn't show well in the photo.

OWH Cards - For you

I completed these cards last night.  For these cards, see how many hands worked on how many steps.

1) Cut Card base - Kathy S.
2) Cut Choco Chip cardstock - Seongsook D.
3) Cut White cardstock - Susan D.
4) Glued Flowers on the white layer - Susan D.
5) Embossed 4) with Lattice EF - Kathy S.
6) Adhered all the layers on the card front and stamped OWH stamp on the card back - Joanie R., Caro Lou R., Karen R. Sandra
7) Stamped and punched out the For you sentiment image - Seongsook D.
8) Check the white layers to make sure they are adhered well - Mary P.
9) Punched out the Ribbon borders - Ping P.
10) Adhered the sentiment image with stampin' dimensionals - Seongsook D.
11) Adhered the ribbon borders - Seongsook D.
12) Added the Pearls and Rhinestones to finish touch - Seongsook D.

Did I miss any step?

Not a surprise!  In fact, most of cards that we make, you know that it takes many steps and time.  However, with many helping hands, it makes easier and create more fun.

I hope these cards will brighten up our heroes ---- especially who are in the environment as the female soldier described below that I copied from the OWH Hero Blog.

Dear Dixie,
Thank you so very much for sending my unit a box of Operation Write Home cards. The volunteers' creativity is truly impressive. I have never seen such beautiful cards in my life. It is hard not to keep in touch when you have such lovely stationary to use! It brightened everyone's week to receive this shipment of cards. I know it takes a lot of effort to coordinate volunteer activities, sort and package materials, and find people to receive them - in college I organized a group to collect clothing and toys to send to our ROTC grads to distribute to Iraqis. I also wanted to let you know how much, as a deployed woman, it meant to me to have some pretty things. I live in a trailer full of holes and weird stains on the floor; I wear cargo pants and no makeup or jewelry. I work with all military men in a decrepit Iraqi facility, and all we ever get to talk and think about is stuff blowing up and helping the Iraqis prevent stuff from blowing up. It's really not a horrible deployment - I like the people I work with, no one has gotten hurt, and it's truly rewarding to work with Iraqis - but it is definitely an environment full of rough edges, hard realities, and concrete barriers and brown dirt and dust everywhere. So in this environment, a colorful and unique handcrafted card really makes a difference. Thank you, so much, for sending something pretty.

OWH Cardmaking Party - Sunday, May 22,2011

Big Thanks to Joanie, Karen, Allison, Caro Lou, Sandra, Shannon, Kathy, Jordan and Janet for participating today's OWH Cardmaking Party at Ek Grove Grocery Outlet.  We completed wonderful sets of cards.  Here are the group photos.  (I will post each design of cards tomorrow. I love them all.)
