School Counselor Spotlight: Kindness Garden

Image
I love bright and colorful things that make an impact, so needless to say I instantly fell in love with Emily's School Counselor Spotlight submission as soon as I saw the pictures! Emily shares a fun and easy way to make a Kindness Garden for No-Name Calling Week or Random Acts of Kindness Week. Emily wrote: During Random Acts of Kindness/No Name Calling week, I did a different lesson on kindness in each grade level. To tie it all together, each student was given an opportunity to decorate a flower for our "kindness garden," which was displayed directly outside of the cafeteria entrance. Each flower needed to contain either an example of a kindness that they have seen or done, or a wish/dream/idea for spreading kindness throughout the school. When stapling the flowers to the bulletin board, I scattered the different grade levels so that students would need to explore the garden and read different flowers in order to find their own. Students loved this activ...

Diva's Day Out!

Image
Life has been crazy for me lately (in a good way!) and I have been trying to play catch up. There are so many things I want to update you on, but I don't know where to start. Diva's Day Out seemed as good of a place to start as any... so... here we go! On May 16th my co-school counselor and I hosted a Diva's Day Out for 4th and 5th grade girls. Diva's Day Out was a big success and girls are still talking about how much fun they had and how awesome it was! Yay! We scheduled Diva's Day Out on a day where we had a half day and received parental permission for the girls to stay after school from 12:30pm - 3:00pm. We had approximately 50 4th and 5th grade Divas in attendance! (Side note we also required all of the girls in our Girls on the Run and Girls on Track programs to participate... more about GOTR later!) During Diva's Day Out students participated in activities focusing on fitness, nutrition, self-esteem, relational aggression, and body image. We mad...

Bullying and Bar Graphs: Part 2

Image
Wow, time has flown by since I wrote the Bullying and Bar Graphs: Part 1 pos t! Since I wrote the post I have facilitated the Bullying and Bar Graph: Part 1 in six classrooms and have facilitated the Bullying and Bar Graphs Part 2 in three classrooms. Students love seeing their results and having a conversation about what the bullying issues are in their classroom. Preparing for Bullying and Bar Graphs: Part 2 Bar Graph Paper I used Post-it Self Stick easel paper . Using eight pieces of Post-it Self Stick easel paper , I wrote one of the eight questions on each sheet.  I then created an x and y axis for students to use when graphing each question. I also cut sheets of Post-it Self Stick easel paper into four pieces and labeled it "solutions" sheet for each question. Question Bags I found these mini purple canvas bags over the summer before school started this year in the dollar spot at Target. They were sold in three-packs for $1.00, but they were on sale f...

Bullying and Bar Graphs: Part 1

Image
While planning bullying lessons for 5th grade classes, I found a great lesson,  "Bullying Survey,"  from Teaching Tolerance . This activity not only starts a conversation about bullying, but can easily be integrated into a math class! I facilitated a two part lesson based on the "Bullying Survey" activity from Teaching Tolerance . The activity includes giving the students a bullying survey and having students graph the survey results. Through this activity, students see what the problem areas are in their classroom and provide solutions for the problem areas. I scheduled thirty minutes for each Part of the lesson. Preparation for Bullying and Bar Graphs: Part 1 Students respond to the pencil and paper version bullying survey and then use "tickets" to record their answers for the graphs. I thought double sided response cards would make it easier for students to record their answers for the bullying survey.  I made two sets of cards for each stu...

Bullying Classroom Lesson Planner Printable

Image
Last week I had the opportunity to meet with 5th grade teachers at their team meeting.  They asked if I could come into their classes and do lessons on bullying. Of course I was thrilled to do classroom lessons with 5th graders! I planned with the teachers to come in for a series of lessons with 5th grade during their morning meeting time.  I am making a schedule so that I will facilitate two lessons in each classroom and then start at the first class again for more sessions.  I am working on planning the lessons so they will go in a progression. In my continued attempt to avoid "Random Acts of Guidance," I decided that this would be a perfect opportunity to create a classroom lesson planner for bullying.  I created the classroom lesson planner to help me keep track of what lessons I plan to facilitate and how they align to  ASCA standards . The first classroom lesson planner I created is a Bullying Classroom Lesson Planner .  I created...

When life gives you lemons... buy pipe cleaners!

Image
School has been rough this year. Let me rephrase that... School has been VERY rough this year. I usually try to keep my blog positive, however I do not want to give the impression that I never have a bad day and that I never get stressed out.  I get stressed out A LOT! I also have my fair share of bad days! I  am fortunate that I have an amazing school counselor with whom I share a building. We support each other on days that are horrible, wonderful, and everything in between. I am also fortunate to have a supportive family and husband who will listen to me vent. To get myself out of a negative funk, I try to focus on things that make me feel positive and productive. Filling my day with student meetings, groups, and lessons leaves less time for "other duties as assigned." That is how I got the idea for this post... The other day I was so frustrated with things that were beyond my control. I was having a difficult time being positive. I decided that I was g...

{giveaway} *Winner Announced* Black Friday Giveaway: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" DVD

Image
I am hosting a Black Friday Giveaway for the  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer  DVD! Last year I showed  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer  to sixth grade classes for a lesson about  Rudolph and Bullying . Last week I taught a lesson about being a "hero bystander" in a 7th grade class using Confessions of a Former Bully . During the lesson I asked if anyone could give me a definition of a bystander.  A student raised their hand and said, "a bystander is someone who watches bullying happen and adds to it, like the other reindeer when you showed us  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer ." I was so excited that a student referenced the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Bullying lesson  I did last year! The  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer  and Bullying lesson  could be used for many different grade levels. Check out the  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer  and Bullying lesson  to see the discussion points I came up with...

I Made a Bully Hat!

Image
This afternoon I was in Target perusing the dollar spot as usual, when I saw IT - a hat that looked strikingly similar to the "bully hat" Katie wears in  Confessions of a Former Bully ! I've wanted to make a bully hat ever since I read  Confessions of a Former Bully   by Trudy Ludwig . I had to get the hat, especially since it was a dollar.  I was so excited about my find that I made a bully hat it this evening! You might be wondering, "What is a bully hat?"  In Confessions of a Former Bully , the school counselor explains to Katie that people put on a bully hat when they do mean things to others and want them to feel bad.  I love this message because it condemns the bullying  behavior,  not the person. It is very empowering to be able to "take off the bully hat" and change your behavior. I am so excited to take my bully hat into school tomorrow! I plan to use  Confessions of a Former Bully   in lessons with 5th grade t...
