Now: Rougher and far more Latino than neighboring Valencia Street, this section of Mission caters to the residents with its shops and to visitors in many of the newer trendy eateries and bars. Victorian homes around neighboring streets are absolutely beautiful, and rarely seen by casual visitors to San Francisco.
Then: Mission Street was the commercial center during most of this area's history, since the first families from Mexico began settling here during and after World War II. Many of the clothing and jewelry shops, bakeries and groceries look as though they haven't been remodeled or updated or re-stocked since then. It gives much of the street a frozen-in-time quality.
How To Get There: Take BART to 16th/Mission and walk south, or 24th/Mission, and walk north. The 49 Muni bus also comes down here from Van Ness, but this is a much slower trip. If you are driving and can't find a parking space, there is a garage on 21st Street between Mission and Valencia.
