The comics gave writers and artists an opportunity to reimagine what the publisher&#39;s most popular characters would look like at the turn of the 22nd-century, and for the most part, the fans loved the books. Some characters, like the Punisher and Spider-Man, were more popular than others, and several of the superheroes from that timeline have made a leap to the regular Earth-616 reality of the standard Marvel Universe.

Marvel started publishing new 2099 books recently, and more are on the way, so the future reality may not have come to a close in 1996, as many fans assumed.
