  • Born in Waterloo, Iowa, writer, actor and comedian Adam DeVine had a life-changing experience at the tender age of 11. While walking his bike across a street, DeVine was hit by a 42-ton cement truck, severely fracturing both his legs and requiring multiple surgeries. It was two years before he could walk again. Following high school, DeVine moved to California, where he attended Orange Coast College, and later studied acting at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. After completing his studies, DeVine moved to Los Angeles where he began performing stand up comedy, and formed the sketch troupe Mail Order Comedy with fellow improvisers Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck. The foursome found a large fan-base online, and was able to parlay their web success into "Workaholics" (Comedy Central 2011-17), on which DeVine served as a creator, actor and producer. DeVine appeared in guest roles on other television series as well, including cult favorite "Community" (NBC 2009-2014) and the Christina Applegate vehicle "Samantha Who?" (ABC 2007-09). DeVine reached a more mainstream audience when he joined the cast of the hit sitcom "Modern Family" (ABC 2009- ) as Andy, Phil and Gloria's new nanny and a potential love interest for Haley (Sarah Hyland). DeVine also worked on the big screen as well, playing Bumper in the surprise hit "Pitch Perfect" (2012). In addition to his work on-screen, DeVine also worked regularly as a voice artist, providing the voice for the character Pizza Steve on Cartoon Network's series "Uncle Grandpa" (Cartoon Network 2013- ) DeVine's own series "Adam DeVine's House Party" (Comedy Central 2013- ), a unique blend of standup comedy and sitcom, debuted in the fall of 2013. Following supporting roles in "Neighbors" (2014), Nancy Meyers comedy-drama "The Intern" (2015) and animated hit "Ice Age: Collision Course" (2016), as well as a return to "Pitch Perfect 2" (2015), DeVine had his mainstream breakout as co-star of indie comedy "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" (2016) opposite Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Zac Efron. After "Workaholics" wrapped up its final season, DeVine appeared in "The Lego Batman Movie" (2017) as The Flash before co-writing and starring in romantic comedy "When We First Met" (Netflix 2018).

Actor Adam Williams served in the United States Navy as a pilot during World War II and was awarded the Navy Cross for his service. After he left the military, he went to Hollywood to pursue film acting. In 1951, Williams made his film debut in the comedy "Queen for a Day," which was based on the popular daytime Mutual Broadcasting Company radio program. The following year he starred as a serial killer in "Without Warning!," but he first garnered notice in the noir film "The Big Heat" as car-bomber Larry Gordon. Williams built a reputation in film for his bad guy roles, and worked steadily throughout the '50s. He also began appearing on television shows, on a number of popular series including the westerns "Have Gun - Will Travel," "The Rifleman" and "Bonanza." However, his best-known project is undoubtedly Hitchcock's "North by Northwest," where he pulled double duty as an actor and a pilot. In the film, he plays Valerian, the henchman who falls off of Mount Rushmore. Williams also served as the pilot who chased down Cary Grant in the iconic cornfield scene. Williams retired from acting in the late 1970's, after his final onscreen performance, Jansen, on the adventure series "Sword of Justice." He died from lymphoma at age 84.

  • Art Farmer
    Dec. at 71 (1928-1999)
Arthur Stewart Farmer (August 21, 1928 – October 4, 1999) was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player. He also played flumpet, a trumpet–flugelhorn combination especially designed for him. He and his identical twin brother, double bassist Addison Farmer, started playing professionally while in high school. Art gained greater attention after the release of a recording of his composition "Farmer's Market" in 1952. He subsequently moved from Los Angeles to New York, where he performed and recorded with musicians such as Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, and Gigi Gryce and became known principally as a bebop player. As Farmer's reputation grew, he expanded from bebop into more experimental forms through working with composers such as George Russell and Teddy Charles. He went on to join Gerry Mulligan's quartet and, with Benny Golson, to co-found the Jazztet. Continuing to develop his own sound, Farmer switched from trumpet to the warmer flugelhorn in the early 1960s, and he helped to establish the flugelhorn as a soloist's instrument in jazz. He settled in Europe in 1968 and continued to tour internationally until his death. Farmer recorded more than 50 albums under his own name, a dozen with the Jazztet, and dozens more with other leaders. His playing is known for its individuality – most noticeably, its lyricism, warmth of tone and sensitivity.

  • Bill Daily
    Dec. at 91 (1927-2018)
An effortlessly funny performer with a knack for playing easily confused sidekicks, Bill Daily rose to fame with two perennially popular television series, "I Dream of Jeannie" (NBC, 1965-1970) and "The Bob Newhart Show" (CBS, 1972-78). In both cases, Daily regularly stole scenes from his leading men and ladies, a practice he had been perfecting since his early days on the Midwestern nightclub circuit and later in Chicago area TV. Daily's brand of humor never wore thin, and he enjoyed steady work in television until the late 1990s, when he retired from acting. However, his two best roles remained in the public eye thanks to reruns, which ensured him a lasting legacy for many years. Born Aug. 30, 1927 in Des Moines, IA, Daily lost his father at an early age, and was raised largely by his mother with the aid of extended family members. In 1939, he and his mother moved to Chicago, where he spent his teenage years. Music held a particular fascination for him, and he got his earliest taste of entertaining crowds in Korea, where he and actor-musician Dick Contino entertained troops with a musical act. After his discharge, Daily tried his hand at becoming a professional musician, and played standup bass with a number of groups in the Midwest. He began adding comedy bits between songs and noticed that they were getting a positive response. He soon switched fulltime to comedy, and began working the club circuit. Daily added stage training to his c.v. through the Goodman Theatre School, and after graduation, took a job at WMAQ, the NBC affiliate in Chicago. There, he worked as an announcer and floor manager before working his way up to writer and director. Daily caught the eye of talk show host Mike Douglas, whose show "The Mike Douglas Show" (syndicated/CBS, 1962-1982) was filmed in Chicago in its early years, and he became a regular guest on the program. This led to a national job with Steve Allen on his syndicated talk show "The New Steve Allen Show" (ABC, 1961-65), which in turn led to guest shots on various sitcoms, starting with "Bewitched" (ABC, 1964-1972). In 1965, he played Roger Healy for the first time in the pilot for "I Dream of Jeannie." The role was initially a minor one, but producer Sidney Sheldon saw Daily's comic skills and elevated him to second banana alongside Larry Hagman. Healy was a classic sitcom sidekick - a harmless goof who made Larry Hagman's Major Nelson look upstanding and handsome, no matter what shenanigans he became involved with. Daily made the role look effortless - which was no small feat, as tensions on the "Jeannie" set ran high due to Hagman's alcohol problems and dissatisfaction with the scripts. Daily, himself, would pen one script for the show during its five-year run. After "Jeannie" ended, Daily made his first film appearance in the Disney live-action film "The Barefoot Executive" (1971). A year later, he was back on TV as befuddled commercial airline navigator Howard Borden on "The Bob Newhart Show" (CBS, 1972-78). Borden was neighbor to Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette's Bob and Emily Hartley, and more often than not, an intrusive and deeply confused presence in their lives. A constant state of jet lag was the culprit - Borden, a divorced father, juggled an impossible schedule in order to raise his son - but his befuddlement was frequently the source of great hilarity on the show. While enjoying his tenure on "Newhart," Daily was also a popular guest on "Match Game 73" (CBS, 1973-79), and became a regular on the show during its final three years on the network. When "Newhart" ended its run, Daily turned to guest shots on various series, with occasional stints as a recurring character, including on "Aloha Paradise" (ABC, 1981), a short-lived attempt to recreate the success of "The Love Boat" (ABC, 1977-1986). He was handed two shots at leading his own series; first in 1983 with "Small & Frye" (CBS, 1983), and the second, "Starting from Scratch" (syndicated, 1988). Neither lasted a single season. In 1985, he reprised Roger Healy in a reunion movie, "I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later" (NBC, 1985), which replaced a reluctant Hagman with Wayne Rogers, and returned again six years later for "I Still Dream of Jeannie" (NBC, 1991). In 1999, Daily appeared with Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman for the first time since the original show's final episode for a reunion on the "Donny & Marie" (syndicated, 1998-2000) talk show. His most prominent TV role post-"Newhart" was perhaps that of Dr. Larry Dykstra, who occasionally provided counseling to the alien known as "ALF" (NBC, 1986-1990). Daily reunited with Newhart three times in the years after "Newhart" - once on a 1990 episode of "Newhart" (CBS, 1982-1990) and later on the short-lived "Bob" (CBS, 1992) and "George and Leo" (CBS, 1997-98). These were among his few television appearances in the late 1990s; by then, Daily was largely retired and living in Albuquerque, NM, where he directed local theater and served as host of a local morning radio program from 2006-09. That same year, he returned to features for the first time in over three decades with a cameo in the Joe Estevez-directed horror-comedy, "Horrorween" (2011). Bill Daily died of undisclosed natural causes in Santa Fe, New Mexico on September 4, 2018. He was 91.

  • Bill Tilghman
    Dec. at 70 (1854-1924)
William Matthew Tilghman Jr. (July 4, 1854 – November 1, 1924) was a career lawman, gunfighter, and politician in Kansas and Oklahoma during the late 19th century. Tilghman was a Dodge City city marshal in the early 1880s and played a role in the Kansas County Seat Wars. In 1889 he moved to Oklahoma where he acquired several properties during a series of land rushes. While serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Oklahoma, he gained recognition for capturing the notorious outlaw Bill Doolin and helping to track and kill the other members of Doolin's gang, which made him famous as one of Oklahoma's "Three Guardsmen". Tilghman never achieved the household-word status of his close friends Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson but nevertheless remains a well-known figure of the American Old West. His memoirs were made into a 1915 film that he directed and starred in as himself. Tilghman died in 1924 at the age of 70 after being shot and killed by a corrupt prohibition agent on the streets of Cromwell, Oklahoma. Much of the fame that he has since achieved has been attributed to the efforts of his second wife, who published his biography in 1949.

  • Bix Beiderbecke
    Dec. at 28 (1903-1931)
Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke (March 10, 1903 – August 6, 1931) was an American jazz cornetist, pianist, and composer. Beiderbecke was one of the most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s, a cornet player noted for an inventive lyrical approach and purity of tone. His solos on seminal recordings such as "Singin' the Blues" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" (both 1927) demonstrate a gift for extended improvisation that heralded the jazz ballad style, in which jazz solos are an integral part of the composition. Moreover, his use of extended chords and an ability to improvise freely along harmonic as well as melodic lines are echoed in post-WWII developments in jazz. "In a Mist" (1927) is the best known of Beiderbecke's published piano compositions, and the only one that he recorded. His piano style reflects both jazz and classical (mainly impressionist) influences. All five of his piano compositions were published by Robbins Music during his lifetime. A native of Davenport, Iowa, Beiderbecke taught himself to play the cornet largely by ear, leading him to adopt a non-standard fingering technique that informed his unique style. He first recorded with Midwestern jazz ensemble The Wolverines in 1924, after which he played briefly for the Detroit-based Jean Goldkette Orchestra before joining Frankie "Tram" Trumbauer for an extended engagement at the Arcadia Ballroom in St. Louis, also under the auspices of Goldkette's organisation. Beiderbecke and Trumbauer joined Goldkette's main band at the Graystone Ballroom in Detroit in 1926. The band toured widely and famously played a set opposite Fletcher Henderson at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in October 1926. He made his greatest recordings in 1927. The Goldkette band folded in September 1927 and, after briefly joining bass saxophone player Adrian Rollini's band in New York, Trumbauer and Beiderbecke joined America's most popular dance band: Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. Beiderbecke's most influential recordings date from his time with Goldkette and Whiteman, although he also recorded under his own name and that of Trumbauer's. The Whiteman period marked a precipitous decline in his health due to his increasing use of alcohol. Treatment for alcoholism in rehabilitation centers, with the support of Whiteman and the Beiderbecke family, failed to stop his decline. He left the Whiteman band in 1929 and in the summer of 1931 he died in his Sunnyside, Queens, New York apartment at the age of 28.His death, in turn, gave rise to one of the original legends of jazz. In magazine articles, musicians' memoirs, novels, and Hollywood films, Beiderbecke has been envisaged as a Romantic hero, the "Young Man with a Horn" (a novel, later made into a movie starring Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, and Hoagy Carmichael). His life has often been portrayed as that of a jazz musician who had to compromise his art for the sake of commercialism. Beiderbecke remains the subject of scholarly controversy regarding his full name, the cause of his death and the importance of his contributions to jazz. He composed or played on recordings that are jazz classics and standards such as "Davenport Blues", "In a Mist", "Copenhagen", "Riverboat Shuffle", "Singin' the Blues", and "Georgia On My Mind".

  • Brandon Routh, a well-known face in Hollywood, is an accomplished actor and former model who was born on October 9, 1979, in Des Moines, Iowa. With a vibrant career spanning over two decades, Routh has earned a reputation for his versatility and charismatic performances in both films and television series. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the iconic DC Comics superhero "Superman" in the film Superman Returns (2006), which catapulted him into global stardom. Routh's journey into acting began when he attended the University of Iowa, focusing his studies in literature and writing while also dipping his toes into modeling. After spending a year in college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. His first significant role came as Seth Anderson in the popular ABC soap opera One Life to Live, a part that marked the beginning of his steady rise in the entertainment industry. This initial success led him to several other roles in TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Will & Grace before landing the coveted role of Superman. In addition to playing Superman, Routh's prowess isn't confined to just one superhero character. He further showcased his adaptability by bringing another DC Comics character to life - Ray Palmer/The Atom - in The CW's TV series Arrow, and later in its spin-off series Legends of Tomorrow. His performance in these roles has cemented his place as a beloved figure in the superhero genre. Away from the world of superheroes, Routh has also proven his ability to take on diverse roles outside the genre, with notable performances in projects such as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) and the TV comedy Chuck.

  • A native of France who moved to New York when he was nine years old and Los Angeles when he was 10, David Charvet became an Elite print model at age 18, appearing in campaigns for Levi's and Coca-Cola, among others. About one billion TV viewers in 142 countries watching "Baywatch" weekly from 1992-95 saw his buffed, olive-complexioned body, making the model-turned-actor with the winning smile an international celebrity. As lifeguard Matt Brody, Charvet was rarely asked to do more than act the stud. Charvet abandoned the series to study acting seriously and pursue additional career opportunities. He appeared in two 1995 TV-movies: "Seduced and Betrayed" (NBC), in which he was a young husband and contractor who has an affair with a psychopathic Susan Lucci; and "Derby" (ABC), in which he was a passionate horse breeder. "Angel Flight Down" (ABC, 1996) found him cast as a member of an emergency medical team coping with survival after the team's plane crashes. Charvet went on to appear from 1996 to 1997 on the popular Fox nighttime soap "Melrose Place." Following his stint on American TV, Charvet returned to his native France, where he released several hit albums as a pop singer between 1997 and 2004. In 2009, he appeared in the reality competition "The Superstars" (ABC 2009), followed by a stint on the French reality series "La Ferme Celebrities" (TF1 2004-2010).

  • Charles Bowers
    Dec. at 69 (1877-1946)
Charles R. Bowers (June 7, 1889 – November 26, 1946) was an American cartoonist and slapstick comedian during the silent film and early "talkie" era. He was forgotten for decades and his name was notably absent from most histories of the Silent Era, although his work was enthusiastically reviewed by André Breton and a number of his contemporaries. As his surviving films have an inventiveness and surrealism which give them a freshness appealing to modern audiences, after his rediscovery his work has sometimes been placed in the "top tier" of silent film accomplishments (along with those of, for example, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd). In comic style, he probably modelled himself after both Harry Langdon and Buster Keaton and was known to the French as "Bricolo."

A tough-looking actor with a distinctive voice, Charles McGraw was equally adept as a character actor or leading man. McGraw began his film career in the 1940s, playing mostly small or un-credited roles. He often played hardened characters on either side of the law during the film noir era, most notably as a hired gun in the classic Hemingway adaptation "The Killers " in 1946. He had a starring role in the crime drama "Roadblock," and in "The Narrow Margin," he played a detective in charge of protecting a woman testifying against gangsters. After over a decade of film roles, he was given the starring role in the 1954 secret agent series "The Adventures of Falcon." He also had a memorable role as Marcellus in the 1960 epic "Spartacus" before gradually evolving into a character actor. Later in his career, he often played law enforcement officers in TV dramas such as "Police Story" or "Emergency!," and he landed a small part in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." McGraw also appeared in the 1975 sci-fi cult film "A Boy and His Dog," an adaptation of a Harlan Ellison story. He died tragically in 1980 after falling through a glass shower door.

  • Charlie Haden
    Dec. at 76 (1937-2014)
Charles Edward Haden (August 6, 1937 – July 11, 2014) was an American jazz double bass player, bandleader, composer and educator whose career spanned more than fifty years. In the late 1950s, Haden was an original member of the ground-breaking Ornette Coleman Quartet. Haden revolutionized the harmonic concept of bass playing in jazz. German musicologist Joachim-Ernst Berendt wrote that Haden's "ability to create serendipitous harmonies by improvising melodic responses to Coleman's free-form solos (rather than sticking to predetermined harmonies) was both radical and mesmerizing. His virtuosity lies…in an incredible ability to make the double bass 'sound out'. Haden cultivated the instrument's gravity as no one else in jazz. He is a master of simplicity which is one of the most difficult things to achieve." ) Haden played a vital role in this revolutionary new approach, evolving a way of playing that sometimes complemented the soloist and sometimes moved independently. In this respect, as did his predecessor bassists Jimmy Blanton and Charles Mingus, Haden helped liberate the bassist from a strictly accompanying role to becoming a more direct participant in group improvisation. In 1969, he formed his first band, the Liberation Music Orchestra, featuring arrangements by pianist Carla Bley. In the late 1960s, he became a member of pianist Keith Jarrett's trio, quartet and quintet. In the 1980s, he formed his band, Quartet West. Haden also often recorded and performed in a duo setting, with musicians including guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Hank Jones.

  • A consummate actor with a gift for playing intelligent, occasionally reserved men in positions of authority, Christian Clemenson was an Emmy-winning performer whose work in features like "United 93" (2006) and television series like "Boston Legal" (ABC, 2004-08) made him among the busiest character actors in the 1990s and 2000s. He earned his training at Harvard and Yale before heading West to try his hand at screen acting; a lengthy career in supporting roles preceded his breakthrough with "Boston Legal," on which his turn as the psychologically troubled lawyer Jerry "Hands" Esperson earned him critical acclaim and an Emmy Award in 2006. Further accolades from his performance on the series signaled that Clemenson was on the cusp of making the leap from solid supporting to leading man, promising that the best was yet to come.

  • Actress and playwright Danai Gurira won critical acclaim with her first play, "In the Continuum" (2006), which addressed social and political issues in her parents' home country of Africa. She would pen two more well regarded works - 2009's "Eclipsed" and 2011's "The Convert, both of which concerned African issues - while enjoying a second career as an actress on television and in features like "The Visitor" (2009). Two years later, Gurira would enjoy her most prominent acting turn as the flinty zombie fighter Michonne on "The Walking Dead" (AMC, 2010- ). The positive response to her performance, in addition to her growing profile in the theater world, indicated that Gurira was poised for stardom in both mediums. Born Danai Jekesai Gurira on Feb. 14, 1978 in Grinnell, IA, she was the second of two children born to academic parents from Zimbabwe, who moved the family back to Africa when she was five years old. There, she enjoyed a happy childhood that soon became focused on performing. After high school, she returned to the United States, where she attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota before earning her masters degree in acting from the Tisch School at New York University. With Nikkole Salter, she wrote the off-Broadway play, "In the Continuum" (2006), about the lives of two women infected with HIV, which won the Obie and Outer Critics Circle Awards for writing, while Gurira herself claimed the Helen Hayes Award for Best Lead Actress in 2007. That same year, she made her feature film debut in "The Visitor" (2007) as a young Senegalese woman who helped a widowed economics professor (Richard Jenkins) find joy and purpose in his life. Minor roles in "Ghost Town" (2008) and Wes Craven's "My Soul to Take" (2010) soon followed, as did Gurira's Broadway debut as an actress in a production of August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" in 2009. That same year, she premiered her second play, "Eclipsed" (2009), about a quartet of women held captive by a rebel leader during the war in Liberia in 2003. The production won Best New Play at the 2010 Helen Hayes Awards as well as Best Playwright for Gurira from the NAACP Theater Awards that same year. In 2011, she appeared in William Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure" with the New York Shakespeare Festival, and then premiered her third play, "The Convert," about a teenage girl in 19th century Zimbabwe who turned to Christianity to evade an arranged marriage. Like its predecessors, the play won several major theater awards, including the 2011 Stavis Award and Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award. After enjoying a supporting role in a six-episode story arc on "Treme" (HBO, 2010-13), Gurira earned her breakout screen role as Michonne, a tough, resourceful new character on the third season of "The Walking Dead"; Michonne immediately became not only a fan favorite, but one of the series' most important characters Gurira was subsequently cast as the lead in "Mother of George" (2013), an independent drama with an African setting.
