  • Master P
    Basketball player, Record producer, Rapper
Percy Robert Miller, prominently known as Master P, was born on April 29th, 1967 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Master P's life story is a testament to the concept of the American dream, evolving from poverty and hardship into one of the wealthiest figures in the entertainment industry. As a teenager, he inherited a small sum of money after the tragic death of his grandfather. Instead of spending it frivolously, he invested in a tiny record store in Richmond, California, which would later transform into No Limit Records, an independent label that significantly impacted the music scene. Master P's business acumen enabled him to uniquely negotiate his contract, allowing him to keep a staggering 85% of his record sales while granting Priority Records only a distribution fee of 15%. This deal was unprecedented at the time and laid the groundwork for other artists to demand more favorable contracts. Master P's debut studio album Get Away Clean was released in 1991. However, it was his fifth studio album, Ice Cream Manā€š that catapulted him to national fame, making him a household name in the hip-hop community. Throughout his career, he has released over fifteen studio albums, many of which have been certified multi-platinum. Besides his musical endeavors, Master P embarked on several other ventures that contributed to his wealth and influence. He ventured into acting, starring in the film I Got the Hook Up and its sequel, along with appearances in numerous TV shows. Moreover, he forayed into sports management, founding No Limit Sports Management, representing several high-profile athletes. Despite his success in the entertainment industry, Master P never lost sight of his roots. He established The P. Miller Youth Centers and the P. Miller Food Foundation for the Homeless, exemplifying his commitment to philanthropy. Master P's multifaceted career portrays him not just as an influential artist but also a shrewd businessman and philanthropist, making his life story a source of inspiration for many.

  • Master M. S. (Hungarian: M. S. Mester, German: Meister M. S., Slovak: Majster M. S.) was a 16th-century painter in Central Europe in late Gothic and early Renaissance art. He was active in BanskĆ” Å tiavnica (to 1918 SelmecbĆ”nya in the Kingdom of Hungary, since 1993 in Slovakia) and probably led a workshop there. Since his true name is unknown, he is sometimes identified with various other Gothic "masters". German art historians generally identify him with J. Brieu, a painter from Augsburg. Also some art historians identify him with the engraver Master MZ, often identified as MatthƤus Zaisinger (1498ā€“1555), a German goldsmith from Munich. According to other research the master could have been a Hungarian painter called SebestyĆ©n, whose name is mentioned in the charter of BanskĆ” Å tiavnica in 1507. The art historian MiklĆ³s Mojzer noted the similarities between this work and that of the painter who accompanied Veit Stoss and made the passion paintings in an altar now in the Esztergom Christian Museum and he called him Marten Swarcz. His art combining dramatic depth and colourful decorative formation is akin to that of the German painters Martin Schongauer, Albrecht DĆ¼rer, J. Brieu and mainly Mathias GrĆ¼newald. Only seven of his panel paintings are known out of eight which used to decorate the high altar of a church in BanskĆ” Å tiavnica. It was believed that the altar was in the Saint Catherine Church, but according to the new research the pictures were part of the altar in the Virgin Mary Church, later rebuilt into the fortress called the Old Castle. Now there are four Passion paintings in Esztergom,Hungary, in the Christian Museum; the painting "The Birth of Christ" is held in SvƤtĆ½ Anton (formerly known also as Hontszentantal) near BanskĆ” Å tiavnica, and The Adoration of the Magi is in the Museum of Lille in France. His painting entitled "The Visitation" depicts the meeting of the two saints, the Virgin Mary and St. Elizabeth, is in Budapest, in the Hungarian National Gallery. There are also three more-than-life-size wood-carved polychromed sculptures preserved which originally belong to the same altar. The statue of Madonna is in the Saint Catherine Church of BanskĆ” Å tiavnica, the statues of Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara are in the art gallery of the Slovak Mining Museum in BanskĆ” Å tiavnica. At the Old Castle in BanskĆ” Å tiavnica, a half-sized maquette of the altar is exhibited, featuring full-coloured photocopies of all the known panel paintings by Master MS, as well as fragments of decorative wood carvings which presumably were parts of the altar.

  • Master Juba

    Master Juba

    Musician, Actor
Master Juba (ca. 1825 ā€“ ca. 1852 or 1853) was an African-American dancer active in the 1840s. He was one of the first black performers in the United States to play onstage for white audiences and the only one of the era to tour with a white minstrel group. His real name was believed to be William Henry Lane, and he was also known as "Boz's Juba" following Dickens's graphic description of him in American Notes. As a teenager, he began his career in the rough saloons and dance halls of Manhattan's Five Points neighborhood, moving on to minstrel shows in the mid-1840s. "Master Juba" frequently challenged and defeated the best white dancers, including the period favorite, John Diamond. At the height of his American career, Juba's act featured a sequence in which he imitated a series of famous dancers of the day and closed by performing in his own style. Being a black man, he appeared with minstrel troupes in which he imitated white minstrel dancers caricaturing black dance using the phenomenon Blackface. Even with his success in America, his greatest success came in England. In 1848 "Boz's Juba" traveled to London with the Ethiopian Serenaders, an otherwise white minstrel troupe. Boz's Juba became a sensation in Britain for his dance style. He was a critical favorite and the most written about performer of the 1848 season. Nevertheless, an element of exploitation followed him through the British Isles, with writers treating him as an exhibit on display. Records next place Juba in both Britain and America in the early 1850s. His American critics were less kind, and Juba faded from the limelight. He died in 1852 or 1853, likely from overwork and malnutrition. He was largely forgotten by historians until a 1947 article by Marian Hannah Winter resurrected his story. Existing documents offer confused accounts of Juba's dancing style, but certain themes emerge: it was percussive, varied in tempo, lightning-fast at times, expressive, and unlike anything seen before. The dance likely incorporated both European folk steps, such as the Irish jig, and African-derived steps used by plantation slaves, such as the walkaround. Prior to Juba's career, the dance of blackface performance was more faithful to black culture than its other aspects, but as blackfaced clowns and minstrels adopted elements of his style, Juba further enhanced this authenticity. By having an effect upon blackface performance, Juba was highly influential on the development of such American dance styles as tap, jazz, and step dancing.

  • Master Henry Gibson

    Master Henry Gibson

    Percussionist
"Master" Henry Gibson (August 9, 1942 ā€“ December 18, 2002) is the world's most recorded percussionist, appearing on about 1200 albums, spanning a career of four decades. Born in the United States, Master Henry began playing on the streets of Chicago. While a young man he performed for Operation Push with Rev. Jesse Jackson. Later he became an integral member of Phil Cohran's revolutionary Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Later Gibson played and recorded with the popular jazz ensemble Odell Brown and the Organizers. Gibson spent a lot of time in Chicago recording studios, which allowed him to be noticed and picked up by professional musicians who took him on tour. One tour led to another, and soon he was playing and recording with artists such as Donny Hathaway (Everything Is Everything) and Curtis Mayfield. Gibson chose to go on the road with Curtis Mayfield and this led to his success and national recognition for his artistry on the bongo and conga drums. Master Henry performed in the Hawaiian Islands in the mid 70's and 80's, making the island of Oahu his home. He teamed with musician, songwriter and producer Kirk Thompson to record the iconic "Lemuria" album and collaborated with many of the top local Waikiki musicians of that era, incl: vocalist, Azure McCall and pianist, Tennyson Stevens. He was an integral part of Kirk Thompson's 'Super Session' with Mike Baxter on keys, John Gallarde on bass and Ron Felix on drums. Master Henry was a popular addition to the Waikiki music scene in those years. While performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Stockholm, Sweden, he met and later married his wife Anne, and made Stockholm his base. He died in Stockholm of a heart attack at age 60. His last concert appearance was with Khaled Habib and Zak Keith at the Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm. His distinctive style can be heard among other recordings, on Curtis Mayfield's "Pusherman." An unsung Soul artist, Henry felt he had more than paid his dues. In his later years, he was less and less content with being a sideman and began asserting himself as the main attraction, placing his percussion at the forefront of shows. He was known for getting upset with audiences in noisy venues ā€” after demanding their silence and full attention, he would instantly regain his focus and proceed to put on spellbinding performances on the bongos. Months after his death in 2002, friends and musicians got together to organize a tribute concert at the Fasching jazz club in Stockholm. His music can still be heard daily on the radio, especially on recordings by Curtis Mayfield.

  • Master of the Parement

    Master of the Parement

    Artist
The Master of the Parement of Narbonne, often referred to more briefly as the Master of the Parement or Parement Master is the name given to an artist of uncertain identity who flourished in France in the late 14th century and early 15th century. He belongs to the period of medieval painting sometimes referred to as International Gothic. The Master is named after the Parement de Narbonne, a unique painted silk altar frontal or parament found in the former Cathedral of Saint Just at Narbonne and now in the Louvre in Paris. The Parement of Narbonne is 2.86 m long and 77.5 cm high, and is painted in black ink (strictly, grisaille) on silk. It includes scenes from the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, including the Kiss of Judas, the Flagellation, the Carrying of the Cross, the Entombment, the Descent into Limbo and the Noli Me Tangere. The then king of France, Charles V and his queen, Jeanne de Bourbon, are shown kneeling at either side of the cross in the central Crucifixion scene. Their presence suggests that the altarcloth was commissioned between 1364, the date of Charles's accession, and 1378, when the queen died. Its colour suggests that it was made for use during Lent, when it was conventional for richly coloured altarpieces to be covered by more simple drapes. Some illuminated manuscripts are attributed to the same artist or his circle, including some of the illustrations in the Book of Hours of RenĆ© d'Anjou which is now in the British Library, and the important manuscript, now in different parts in several museums known as the TrĆØs Belles Heures de Notre Dame (BnF), and the Milan-Turin Hours. According to the British Library, the Parement Master may have been Jean d'Orleans, an artist who is known to have been employed by Charles V between 1340 and 1407. The style of the workshop of the Parement Master is distinctive. The figures are graceful and relatively realistic and three-dimensional in appearance, with expressive faces, but their heads tend to be disproportionate and heavy. Meiss (1967) suggests that the artists were influenced by earlier Italian painting, though others have drawn parallels with contemporary Bohemian style, or have seen northern (perhaps Flemish) influence in the realism of the faces. Both the handling of the grisaille technique and the box-like architectural frames in which some of the scenes are set indicate a keen awareness of the earlier work of Jean Pucelle (active in Paris in the 1320s).

  • Master of 1518

    Master of 1518

The Master of 1518 is a Flemish painter belonging to the stylistic school of Antwerp Mannerism. A group of unsigned paintings is attributed to this artist on stylistic grounds, and his name is derived from the date inscribed on the painted wings of a carved wooden altarpiece of the Life of the Virgin in St. Mary's Church in LĆ¼beck Germany. Although this artistā€™s identity is not known with certainty, some scholars believe that the Master of 1518 was either Jan Mertens the Younger or Jan van Dornicke, or that all three were the same person. His paintings are primarily crowded depictions of religious scenes combining Gothic and Renaissance styles. He frequently incorporated elaborate clothing and architectural ruins.

  • Master of Alkmaar

    Master of Alkmaar

The Master of Alkmaar was a Dutch painter active around Alkmaar at the beginning of the sixteenth century. His name is derived from a series of panel paintings from the church of Saint Lawrence in that city, dated to 1504 and showing the Seven Works of Mercy; they are currently in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The paintings, bearing the stamp of Geertgen tot Sint Jans, are done in bright colors, and their figures are drawn in an exaggeratedly caricatured manner. It has been proposed that this artist is identical to Cornelis Buys I, the brother of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen; he is known to have been active in Alkmaar between 1490 and 1524. More recently, the name of Pieter Gerritsz, originally of Haarlem, has been proposed, he being in Alkmaar beginning in 1502. This artist, in 1518, was compensated for a painting of Saint Bavo in Haarlem, and his name can be found in records of the Egmond Abbey and of the church of Saint Lawrence in Alkmaar, over a period covering the years 1515 to 1529.
  • Master of Saint Giles

    Master of Saint Giles

The Master of Saint Giles (French: MaƮtre de Saint-Gilles) was a Franco-Flemish painter active, probably in Paris, about 1500, working in a delicate Late Gothic manner, with rendering of textures and light and faithful depictions of actual interiors that show his affinities with Netherlandish painting. It is not clear whether the Master of Saint Giles was a French painter who trained in the Low Countries (perhaps more likely), or a Netherlander who emigrated to France. His pseudonym was given him by Max FriedlƤnder, who reconstructed part of the anonymous painter's oeuvre, starting from two panels devoted to Saint Giles (a Miracle and a Mass) in the National Gallery, London, that were part of the lefthand shutter of an altarpiece, and two further panels now in Washington from the same altarpiece. The hand of an assistant can be discerned in the Baptism of Clovis at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, who also have a panel with Episodes from the Life of a Bishop-Saint - perhaps Saint Leu, Saint Denis or Saint Remy. All four panels have, or had, single grisaille figures of saints (Saints Peter, Giles, Denis and an unidentified bishop-saint) in niches, imitating sculpture, on the reverse. The Washington pair, which were in poor condition, have been separated and are lost, although photographs exist. Undoubtedly there were further panels, whose subjects cannot be guessed, as the combination of scenes is original.

  • Master of the Death of the Virgin

Master of the Death of the Virgin

    Engraver
The Master of the Death of the Virgin (fl c. 1440ā€“1450) was an engraver, probably active in what is now southern Germany. Approximately ten prints have been ascribed to him, including a Death of the Virgin for which he was named. He was formerly believed to be from the southern Netherlands, but is now thought to have lived in southern Germany. He was probably a goldsmith, and was among the first engravers known to be active. His style is awkward and unrefined, unlike the work of his contemporary, the Master of the Playing Cards. The drapery in his prints is stiff, and there is only a limited suggestion of space, creating an illusion that the figures are floating in mid-air. Most of the surviving work assigned to this Master is religious in nature; there is, however, a Battle Scene, a unique impression of which is housed in the Louvre in Paris. This depicts a broad landscape with at least eighty soldiers, both mounted and on foot, in heavy combat.

  • Master of the Schƶppingen Altarpiece

    Master of the Schƶppingen Altarpiece

The Master of the Schƶppingen Altarpiece was a German artist active in the area around MĆ¼nster between 1445 and 1470. It appears likely that he studied in the Netherlands, and was influenced by the work of Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden. His name is derived from an altarpiece, dated to about 1470, that hangs in the parish church of Schƶppingen. At the center of the painting is a depiction of the Crucifixion, along with four scenes from the Passion, which have been integrated into the background landscape. On the interior of the wings are eight more Passion scenes, while on their exterior are representations of the Annunciation and the Nativity. Of these, the former appears to have been derived from the Altarpiece of Saint Barbara painted by Campin, while the latter is an original composition. Other works ascribed to the Master's hand include an altarpiece at Haldern, today held in the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History, as is a panel from a now-disbanded altarpiece depicting Saint Nicholas and the Fathers of the Church. Also believed to be by him are a mural fragment in the MĆ¼nster cathedral and an altarpiece, dated to before 1470, that stood in the Wiesenkirche of Soest before its destruction in 1945.
  • Master of the Golden Altar

    Master of the Golden Altar

The Master of the Golden Altar was a German painter, active in the area around LĆ¼neburg during the fifteenth century. His name is derived from an altarpiece dating most likely to 1418, formerly in St. Michael's church in LĆ¼neburg and now held by a museum in Hanover.
  • Master of the Bamberg Altar

    Master of the Bamberg Altar

The Master of the Bamberg Altar (fl. ca. 1420-1440) was a German painter active in the Nuremberg area. His name is derived from an altarpiece depicting scenes from the Passion, painted in 1429 for the Franciscan church in Bamberg; this may be seen today in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich. Stylistically, the painting appears to be descended from the work of the Nuremberg Master of the Altarpiece of the Virgin. The Master collaborated with the Master of the Imhoff Altar in the creation of the eponymous altarpiece; his depiction of the Man of Sorrows with the Virgin and Saint John forms the reverse panel. This is a characteristic example of his solemn and simple style. Another, more restrained work is the Man of Sorrows Standing with the Virgin, today in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. The Master of the Bamberg Altar seems to have depended strongly on facial types and figure styles derived from Bohemian painting; he seems especially to have known the work of the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece, although his figures are more block-like and solid and less elegant than those of the latter artist. He would appear to be moving away from the International Gothic and towards a more Italian-derived style, based especially on work from Altichiero. Among the local artists who appear to have derived some of their style from the Master is Sebald Bopp.
  • Master of the Imhoff Altar

    Master of the Imhoff Altar

The Master of the Imhoff Altar (fl. c. 1410-1420) was a German painter. His name comes from an altarpiece, dating to between 1418 and 1422, commissioned by Konrad Imhoff for the Lorenzkirche in Nuremberg. Only the central panel, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, and the wings, depicting several apostles, are still preserved in the church, albeit partially disassembled. On the inner wings, flanking the Coronation, may be found a donor portrait of the donor with three of his four wives. Originally the back of the altarpiece held an image of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. This piece, which has since been removed to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, is now believed to be the work of the Master of the Bamberg Altar. It is believed by some historians that the Master of the Imhoff Altar is also the so-called Master of the Deichsler Altarpiece, whose work is known from two surviving altarpiece wings in Berlin. Attempts have been made to link both artists to Berthold Landauer, but these have been based entirely on his activity in Nuremberg at the time in question. The Deischler paintings are believed to predate the Imhoff Altar by five to ten years, and are the work of an artist deeply familiar with the art of Bohemia from around 1400. The Imhoff Altar, by contrast, represents a marked shift towards a firmer and sparer manner, coupled with the use of stronger colors.

    Master of the Staufen Altarpiece

The Master of the Tennenbach Altar (fl. 1420ā€“30), sometimes referred to as the Master of the Staufen Altar (German: Meister des Tennenbacher Altars; Meister des Staufener Altars), was a Gothic painter active in the Upper Rhine in the second quarter of the 15th century whose real name is unknown. His working name is taken from the altar paintings he created, formerly in Tennenbach Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in the Black Forest in Baden-WĆ¼rttemberg, Germany. The work is also sometimes mistakenly known as the Staufen Altar from its supposed later location in Staufen im Breisgau.15 small panels survive of a presumed 16, 12 in the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg and three in the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe. They depict scenes from the Passion and from the Life of Mary. The work is dated to around 1430 and is often compared to the work of the Master of the Upper Rhine, formerly known as the Master of the Garden of Paradise. The Master of the Tennenbach Altar appears also to be linked stylistically with Jost Haller, a painter who was active up to about 1485 in Strasbourg and SaarbrĆ¼cken. Like Haller he still uses the "soft style", as it is called, of International Gothic art, but also shows the influence of contemporary Dutch Gothic painting, as for example the works of Robert Campin and his pupil Rogier van der Weyden which show the beginnings of realistic depiction of detail. Characteristic of the figures in the paintings of the Master of the Tennenbach Altar are their "almost childishly soft features".

  • Master of the Legend of the Magdalen

Master of the Legend of the Magdalen

The Master of the Legend of the Magdalen (sometimes called the Master of the Magdalen Legend) was an Early Netherlandish painter, active from about 1483 to around 1527. He has not been identified; his name of convenience is derived from a large, now-dispersed altarpiece with scenes from the life of Mary Magdalene, which has been dated to between 1515 and 1520 based on the costumes of the donor portraits. However other works attributed to him are extremely difficult to date with any accuracy. Many paintings have been linked with the triptych, which is thought to have been finished late in the artist's career. Other major works include his two Magdalen panels in London. He is not to be confused with the "Master of the Mansi Magdalen" (fl. ?Antwerp, c. 1515ā€“25) or the Magdalen Master (fl. Florence, c. 1265ā€“90).Some of his portraits suggest a possible link with artists in Brussels, and it is thought that he worked there, and headed a large workshop. An early influence appears to have been Rogier van der Weyden; his work also shares characteristics with that of Bernard van Orley, and a link with the Master of the Death of the Virgin has been suggested. Like van Orley, this artist is believed to have been active in the court of Margaret of Habsburg, regent of the Netherlands from 1507 until 1530. Works ascribed to the Master are in the collections of the National Gallery, London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. He is sometimes associated with Pieter van Coninxloo based on similarities of style, time and location. A number of art historians, including Max FriedlƤnder, who first made the association between the works now attributed to the Master of the Legend of the Magdalen, have speculated that they may have been the same person. It is possible also that van Coninxloo for a time was a member of the master's workshop.

The Master of the Altarpiece of the Ten Commandments (German: Meister der Zehngebotetafel) was a German painter active in the region of Gƶttingen at the beginning of the fifteenth century. His name is derived from a portable altarpiece, depicting the Ten Commandments, which is believed to have at one time stood in the chapel of the Sacred Heart in Gƶttingen, constructed in 1319. Only the central part of the painting survives, today in the history museum in Hannover; it depicts six scenes in two registers, showing the second, third, fourth, seventh, eight, and ninth Commandments. The wings, illustrating the other four, are now lost. At the top of the composition is a half-length figure of Christ holding a scroll on which are inscribed the Commandments. • Master of the Rolls

    Master of the Rolls

    Judge
The Keeper or Master of the Rolls and Records of the Chancery of England, known as the Master of the Rolls, is the second-most senior judge in England and Wales after the Lord Chief Justice, and serves as President of the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal and Head of Civil Justice. The position dates from at least 1286, although it is believed that the office probably existed earlier than that. The Master of the Rolls was initially a clerk responsible for keeping the "Rolls" or records of the Court of Chancery, and was known as the Keeper of the Rolls of Chancery. The Keeper was the most senior of the dozen Chancery clerks, and as such occasionally acted as keeper of the Great Seal of the Realm. The post evolved into a judicial one as the Court of Chancery did; the first reference to judicial duties dates from 1520. With the Judicature Act 1873, which merged the Court of Chancery with the other major courts, the Master of the Rolls joined the Chancery Division of the High Court and the Court of Appeal, but left the Chancery Division by the terms of the Judicature Act 1881. The Master of the Rolls had also been warden of the little-used Domus Conversorum for housing Jewish converts, which led to the house and chapel being used to store legal documents and later becoming the location of the Public Record Office. He retained his clerical functions as the nominal head of the Public Record Office until the Public Records Act 1958 transferred responsibility for it to the Lord Chancellor. One residual reminder of this role is the fact that the Master of the Rolls of the day continues to serve, ex officio, as President of the British Records Association. The Master of the Rolls was also previously responsible for registering solicitors, the officers of the Senior Courts. One of the most prominent people to hold the position was Thomas Cromwell, a highly influential figure during the reign of Henry VIII; more recently, Lord Denning held the position for 20 years, from 1962 to 1982, and made sweeping changes in the common law. On 3 October 2016, Sir Terence Etherton succeeded Lord Dyson as Master of the Rolls.
