8/25/12: Astronaut Neil Armstrong died at 82 due to complications from blocked coronary arteries. In 1969, Armstrong became an international icon and hero as the first man to step foot on the moon. 4/18/12: Renowned TV Host, Dick Clark, died at the age of 82 after suffering a heart attack post surgery. Clark was known for hosting the long running music TV program, "American Bandstand" as well as game shows like "Pyramid". She started her career in standup at the age of 35 in 1952. Diller was considered a leader and paved the way for women in comedy. 8/19/12: Renowned director, Tony Scott, was found dead after committing suicide in San Pedro California. Scott was known for his numerous hit movies like "Top Gun", "True Romance" and "Crimson Tide". He was pulled from the water after jumping off a bridge in San Pedro, a suicide note was found inside his car by the police. 7/23/12: Physicist Sally Ride joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman to travel to space in 1983. She was part of the five-person crew on the Space Shuttle Challenger. (At the time, she was also the youngest American to enter space, at the age of 32, and the first woman to use a robot arm in space.) Ride later left NASA to work in Washington, DC, at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Arms Control. 6/17/12: King was the victim of an infamous police brutality case against four LAPD officers. Despite video depicting officers beating and hitting King while he was already on the ground, 3 of the officers were acquitted and the jury failed to reach a verdict for the fourth. Outrage about the verdict of the case sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots. King was found dead on the morning of Sunday, June 17th, at the bottom of a pool in Rialto, California. 5/16/12: Guitarist and musician Brown was considered the "Godfather of Go-Go" music, typified by his 1970 hit "Bustin' Loose." The song has remained a standard of the genre (a sub-set of funk music), and was memorably sampled in Nelly's mega-hit "Hot in Herre." Davis was one of the first writers on "SNL," and helped define the shows voice. He was one of the creators of the iconic "Coneheads" sketches and wrote Dan Aykroyd's bits impersonating Julia Child. 7/30/12: Experimental French documentarian and filmmaker Chis Marker was perhaps best known for his 1962 short "La Jetee," told almost entirely with still photographs. The short later inspired the Terry Gilliam sci-fi film "12 Monkeys." Marker started his career writing essays and film criticism before becoming associated with the famed "Left Bank Film Movement" which also included pioneers like Alain Resnais and Agnes Varda. 9/25/12: Singer/Songwriter and TV Personality, Andy Williams passed away from cancer of the bladder. Williams was best known as the singer of the hit song "Moon River", that won an Academy Award after being in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's". He also had his own theater space in Branson, MO where he performed every night.
