Bronski Beat are an English synthpop trio which achieved success in the mid-1980s, particularly with the 1984 chart hit "Smalltown Boy", from their debut album The Age of Consent, which was their only US Billboard Hot 100 single. All members of the group were openly gay and their songs reflected this, often containing political commentary on gay-related issues. The initial line-up, which recorded the majority of the band's hits, consisted of Jimmy Somerville (vocals), Steve Bronski (born Steven William Forrest, keyboards, percussion) and Larry Steinbachek (keyboards, percussion). Somerville left Bronski Beat in 1985, and went on to have success as lead singer of The Communards and as a solo artist. He was replaced by new vocalist John Foster, with whom the band continued to have hits in the UK and Europe through 1986. Foster left Bronski Beat after their second album, and the band used a series of vocalists before dissolving in 1996. Steve Bronski, the only remaining original member, now leads a revived touring version of the band, and has recorded new material alongside 1990s member Ian Donaldson. Larry Steinbachek died in 2016.

"Ma" Rainey (born Gertrude Pridgett, September 1882 or April 26, 1886 – December 22, 1939) was one of the earliest African-American professional blues singers and one of the first generation of blues singers to record. She was billed as the "Mother of the Blues". She began performing as a young teenager and became known as Ma Rainey after her marriage to Will Rainey, in 1904. They toured with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later formed their own group, Rainey and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. Her first recording was made in 1923. In the next five years, she made over 100 recordings, including "Bo-Weevil Blues" (1923), "Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues" (1924), "Black Bottom" (1927), and "Soon This Morning" (1927).Rainey was known for her powerful vocal abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a "moaning" style of singing. Her powerful voice was never adequately captured on her records, because she recorded exclusively for Paramount, which was known for its below-average recording techniques and poor shellac quality. However, her other qualities are present and most evident in her early recordings "Bo-Weevil Blues" and "Moonshine Blues". Rainey recorded with Louis Armstrong, and she toured and recorded with the Georgia Jazz Band. She continued to tour until 1935, when she retired and went to live in her hometown.

Harris Glenn Milstead (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988), better known by his stage name Divine, was an American actor, singer, and drag queen. Closely associated with the independent filmmaker John Waters, Divine was a character actor, usually performing female roles in cinematic and theatrical productions, and adopted a female drag persona for his music career. Born in Baltimore, Maryland to a conservative middle-class family, Milstead developed an early interest in drag while working as a women's hairdresser. By the mid-1960s he had embraced the city's countercultural scene and befriended Waters, who gave him the name "Divine" and the tagline of "the most beautiful woman in the world, almost." Along with his friend David Lochary, Divine joined Waters' acting troupe, the Dreamlanders, and adopted female roles for their experimental short films Roman Candles (1966), Eat Your Makeup (1968), and The Diane Linkletter Story (1969). Again in drag, he took a lead role in both of Waters' early full-length movies, Mondo Trasho (1969) and Multiple Maniacs (1970), the latter of which began to attract press attention for the group. Divine next starred in Waters' Pink Flamingos (1972), which proved a hit on the U.S. midnight movie circuit, became a cult classic, and established Divine's fame within the American counterculture as well as internationally. The film continues to be hugely popular throughout the world. After starring as the lead role in Waters' next film, Female Trouble (1974), Divine moved on to theater, appearing in several avant-garde performances alongside San Francisco drag collective, The Cockettes. He followed this with a performance in Tom Eyen's play Women Behind Bars and its sequel, The Neon Woman. In 1977 he starred in the West End of London in the UK production of Women Behind Bars. Continuing his cinematic work, he starred in two more of Waters' films, Polyester (1981) and Hairspray (1988), the latter of which represented his breakthrough into mainstream cinema. Independent of Waters, he also appeared in a number of other films, such as Lust in the Dust (1985) and Trouble in Mind (1985), seeking to diversify his repertoire by playing male roles. In 1981, Divine embarked on a career in the disco industry by producing a number of Hi-NRG tracks, most of which were written by Bobby Orlando. He achieved international chart success with hits like "You Think You're a Man", "I'm So Beautiful", and "Walk Like a Man", all of which were performed in drag. Having struggled with obesity throughout his life, he died from cardiomegaly, shortly after the release of Hairspray. Described by People magazine as the "Drag Queen of the Century", Divine has remained a cult figure, particularly within the LGBT community, and has provided the inspiration for fictional characters, artworks, and songs. Various books and documentary films devoted to his life have also been produced, including Divine Trash (1998) and I Am Divine (2013).

Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile's work incorporated the influences of alt country, folk, and rock. She plugged away for a good while, slowly building an audience, until things finally blew up for her in a big way. Born on June 1, 1981 in Ravensdale, Washington, Carlile began writing songs and singing while in her teens. After coming up on the Seattle music scene, she released her self-titled debut album on Columbia in 2005, but sales were modest. The follow-up record, 2007's T-Bone Burnett-produced The Story, gained a wider audience and higher chart placing, with the title track becoming a minor hit. A decade later, benefitting from Carlile's subsequent success, the album would achieve Gold status. 2009's Give Up the Ghost did better still, hitting No. 26 in the Top 200. Overseen by another star producer, Rick Rubin, the album featured an appearance by Elton John (an early hero of Carlile's) on "Caroline." A big breakthrough came with Carlile's next album, 2012's Bear Creek, which went all the way to No. 10 and gave the singer/songwriter a No. 4 hit on Triple A radio with the single "That Wasn't Me." Carlile earned her first Grammy nomination, for Best Americana album, with her next record, The Firewatcher's Daughter. The album, which marked her departure from Columbia and the beginning of her relationship with ATO Records, included an appearance from Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, and charted No. 9 on the Top 200 while hitting the top spot on the rock and folk charts. But Carlile's time with ATO was to be short-lived, as she shifted over to hotshot Nashville producer Dave Cobb's Elektra-distributed imprint, Low Country Sound, for her 2018 album, By the Way, I Forgive You.

Morrissey, born Steven Patrick Morrissey in 1959, emerged as a pivotal figure in the world of indie rock, carving his own niche with his idiosyncratic wit, poignant lyrics, and an unmistakably emotive vocal style. Raised in Manchester, England, his early life was steeped in literature and music, shaping his future artistic endeavors. Prior to his solo career, he served as the lyricist and vocalist for the Smiths, a seminal band that sonically defined the 1980s and has since been hailed as one of the greatest bands in the history of alternative music. Morrissey's tenure with the Smiths was marked by a series of critically acclaimed albums, including The Queen Is Dead and Meat is Murder. His distinct lyrical style, often addressing themes of alienation, sexual ambiguity, and social inequity, set him apart from his contemporaries. However, it was post-Smiths, during his solo career, that he truly cemented his legacy. His debut album Viva Hate, released in 1988, showcased his ability to blend melancholy and humor with an underlying commentary on British society. Over time, he produced several chart-topping albums, including Your Arsenal and You Are the Quarry, demonstrating an enduring appeal that transcended generations. Despite controversy and periods of musical silence, Morrissey's influence on indie rock and pop culture remains immense. Known for his unabashedly provocative persona and his unflinching commitment to animal rights activism, he continues to inspire and confound in equal measure. His profound impact on music, combined with his literary accomplishments - two published books, Autobiography and List of the Lost - affirm his standing as an iconoclast in the realm of contemporary culture. The enigma that is Morrissey continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, securing his place in the pantheon of influential music figures.

A talented singer with floppy hair that set fans into a frenzy, Harry Styles auditioned for "The X Factor" (ITV, 2004- ) as a solo act but was instead grouped with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form the boy band One Direction. After coming in third on the reality show, they hit No. 1 with their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful," scored the hit follow-up "Gotta Be You," and released their blockbuster debut album, 2011's Up All Night. Showered with European awards, fan adulation and commercial success, One Direction then moved to conquer America with appearances on "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ) and "iCarly" (Nickelodeon, 2007- ) that coincided with the chart-topping release of their album stateside. Representing a new era of boy bands that seemed - at least on the surface - to be less packaged and more approachable, One Direction, as well as Harry Styles, seemed poised to enjoy considerable success on the global stage. After the band announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016, Styles moved into a more mature direction, delving into vintage '70s pop sounds on his debut solo album and co-starring in Christopher Nolan's intense war drama "Dunkirk" (2017). Born Feb. 1, 1994 in Evesham, England, U.K., Harold Edward "Harry" Styles grew up idolizing Elvis Presley and The Beatles. He was the lead singer for a local band, White Eskimo, which enjoyed some minor hometown success. Determined to make it as a singer, he auditioned as a solo act for "The X Factor" (ITV, 2004- ) in 2010, performing Stevie Wonder's hit single "Isn't She Lovely." Sent for additional training at the show's musical boot camp by the judges, Styles's rendition of "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" was deemed not strong enough for him to make the cut as a solo singer. Happily, this opened other professional doors for Styles, who was teamed with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction, whose name was coined by Styles himself. As a boy band, they placed third on "The X Factor" and ascended to international superstardom with the 2011 release of their debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful." Hitting number one on the U.K. singles chart and breaking sales records, the song paved the way for a follow-up hit, "Gotta Be You," and their global smash debut album, Up All Night. Continuing their meteoric rise, the band notched a sold-out U.K. tour and won three 4Music Awards (Best Group, Breakthrough and Video), a Brit Award (Best British Single for "What Makes You Beautiful") and two U.K. Kids' Choice Awards (Favorite U.K. Newcomer and Favorite Band). Their European success led to their American breakthrough, with their album hitting No. 1 and One Direction replicating their European success in the States with a flood of endorsements, publicity appearances and television performances. They were featured as the musical guest (and appeared in a skit) on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ), booked a guest spot on "iCarly" (Nickelodeon, 2007- ), and announced plans for a 2012 world tour. Unlike the previous wave of boy bands, One Direction eschewed matching clothing and tightly choreographed dancing, radiating instead a seemingly less manufactured, less polished image. Although much of One Direction's appeal came from their unified front of playful energy, each member stood out in his own way. Styles' charm came from his artfully shaggy hair, winning personality and endearing quirks, including a brief relationship with the much older Caroline Flack and his love of being naked. Especially close to bandmate and roommate Louis Tomlinson, the twosome were jointly referred to affectionately as "Larry Stylinson" by fans. Three further hit albums followed before One Direction announced that the group was taking an indefinite hiatus in 2016. Styles began his solo career with a self-titled album in early 2017. Taking on a new musical direction that harkened back to vintage '70s pop artists like Elton John and Paul McCartney, Harry Styles enjoyed critical respect from many who had dismissed One Direction, and went to Number One in charts across the globe. That same year, Style made his film debut in Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (2017), garnering solid reviews as a British army private in the midst of one of the defining battles of World War II. Writer/director Nolan claimed to be unaware of Styles' fame as a pop star when he cast the young actor for the role.

No one would have ever guessed a 1990s "Riot grrrl" artist would turn into a veritable comedy star, yet Carrie Brownstein defied such expectations with her talent and creative genius. Brownstein made her mark in the mid-1990s with the Washington-based band Sleater-Kinney and its no-nonsense music, provocative lyrics, and feminist anthems. Rooted in the "Riot grrrl" movement that launched bands such as Bikini Kill and inspired singers like Alanis Morissette, Sleater-Kinney impressed critics with its self-titled debut released in 1995. The group made strides toward mainstream attention with its post 9/11 album One Beat (2002) and a successful touring stint with Pearl Jam. After Sleater-Kinney announced an indefinite hiatus in 2006 (regrouping in early 2015), Brownstein discovered a passion for acting, which lead to a collaboration with "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ) cast member Fred Armisen. Together, the duo created and starred on "Portlandia" (IFC, 2011- ), a hilarious and largely improvised sketch comedy series inspired by Portland's hipster-types, their idealistic world view, and obsession with 90s indie rock music. By marrying her love for music and acting on the hit TV show, Brownstein proved she was a gifted talent who could transcend not just genres but mediums. She expanded this new perception with a bestselling memoir, Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl (2015)and a small role in Todd Haynes' drama "Carol" (2015).

Ricky Helton Wilson (March 19, 1953 – October 12, 1985) was an American musician best known as the original guitarist and founding member of rock band the B-52's. Born in Athens, Georgia, Wilson was the brother of fellow member Cindy Wilson. The B-52's were founded in 1976, when Ricky, his sister Cindy, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland and Fred Schneider shared a tropical flaming volcano drink at a Chinese restaurant and, after an impromptu music session at the home of their friend, Owen Scott III, played for the first time at a Valentine's Day party for friends. Wilson's unusual guitar tunings were a large contribution to the band's quirky sound. On October 12, 1985, at the age of 32, Wilson died from complications related to AIDS following the recording of the band's fourth studio album Bouncing Off the Satellites. According to Keith Strickland, the album had been completed and mixed before Wilson's death, with only the cover art not yet designed (an illustration by Kenny Scharf was ultimately decided upon). Devastated, the band went into seclusion and did not tour to promote the album, although they did several photo shoots and TV appearances, and filmed a video for "Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland". In addition to his work with The B-52's, Wilson played the guitar on the song "Breakin' in My Heart" on Tom Verlaine's self-titled debut album in 1979. This was his only non-B-52's appearance on record. He also appeared in various films, notably One Trick Pony. Posthumously he also appeared in Athens, GA: Inside/Out, The B-52's 1979–1989, and The B-52's Time Capsule: Videos for a Future Generation 1979–1998 through archival footage.

Keith Julian Strickland (born October 26, 1953) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, composer, and one of the founding members of The B-52s. He was born in Athens, Georgia. Originally the band's drummer, Strickland switched to guitar after the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985. Strickland also plays keyboards and bass guitar on many of The B-52s recordings, and has occasionally provided backing vocals. Strickland composes the music for The B-52s. He said of the process: "Ricky and I used to write the music together, but now I write the individual instrument parts and arrange the instrumental compositions myself. I'm trying to convey a feeling when I compose. I think of my instrumentals as soundscapes - the chord progressions, rhythms, harmonics and musical direction are used to evoke various sonic atmospheres or moods."Strickland came out as gay in 1992.On December 13, 2012, Strickland retired from touring for the B52s. Fred Schneider said of Strickland's announcement, "We had known about Keith’s decision for a while but we just didn’t want to think about it. Keith will probably still be available for special shows but he wanted to get off the road. Keith will always be able to work with us whenever he wants. He’s a best friend."
