Tour de Primes 2010
February is a couple of weeks away which means it is almost time for the Tour de Primes. 2 is the first prime number...and the only even one. This makes it unique among prime numbers. Therefore, we'd like to pay homage to the number 2 and declare February, Prime Month...February being the 2nd month of the year. :) And there's no better way to pay homage to a prime number than to go out and find one. :) More precisely, a Top 5000 prime.
For the month of February, we'd like to offer a small competition. There are no points to be gained or awards to be won...just a simple colored jersey at the end of the month. No pressure or stress other than what you put on yourself. :)
- Yellow Jersey - prime count leader
- Green Jersey - points (prime score) leader
- Checkered Jersey - on the 17th of February we'll have a "mountain" stage and award the Checkered Jersey to the one who finds the most primes on that day (tiebreaker will be prime score for that day).
Prime counts and scores will be kept for all Top 5000 primes discovered in the month of February.
Don't expect the primes to come easy. Getting into the Top 5000 Primes Database is getting harder and harder with each new prime found. But let's not let this deter us from the pursuit of finding primes.
Currently, the fastest opportunity to find Top 5000 primes is with the Proth Prime Search project. This includes BOINC PPS/PPSE LLR and PrimeGrid PRPNet PPSE port 12007. Fortunately, the Year of the Tiger Challenge is during the month which is on the PPS LLR project.
To participate in BOINC PPS/PPSE LLR, all you have to do is select it in your PrimeGrid preferences.
To participate in PRPNet PPSE, please see this post. Manual cobblestones are earned. However, it may take up to a month before they are applied.
BOINC PPS is around n=700K, BOINC PPSE is around n=485K and PRPNet PPSE is around n=700K. Therefore, the faster tests are in PPSE. Compared to those 321 WU's, these PPS and PPSE ones will seem like a walk in the park. :)
Good Luck, have fun, and enjoy! :D

What are the current odds on finding a prime, John? Currently I have
Proth Prime Search tasks
Completed tasks 263218
Credit 658,316.50
Primes found 61
Percentage of tests resulting with a prime 0.0232
but the time of finding primes on a weekly basis seems long past.

For PPS we're seeing about 1 prime every 7.4K WU's. SGS is about 1 prime every 11K WU's.

SGS has been taking a lot longer to give a prime now, must mean were getting higher in the numbers. Did Primegrid pick a section of SGS to do or are we the only ones doing it? also are we double checking SGS at all anymore?
I look forward to the Tour de Primes 2010!! Lennart and Tim you got a challenger coming into the ring :) /puts on his gloves and gets ready to rumble!!

SGS remains about 1 prime in 11K tests. It also remains a fixed n search so this will not change for the duration of the project. :)

We are not aware of any other efforts of SGS at n=666666.

Well Iris is having a nap so she won't too tired for the challenge and Socks is having dinner so she won't be too hungry while Hester is being her usual ball of energy and starfishing on the bars of her cage keen as ever to get involved in anything which is offering. So I like to think we are well placed.
It would be fantastic if gecko powered computers were involved but no one seems to have heard from DoES in a long time which is a big shame.
Oh and do I see you with a full set of badges?

The Tour Begins!!!
The Tour de Primes 2010 is officially open. A record of all primes found during the month of February will be kept in the first post. Remember, only primes recorded in the Top 5000 List will count.
Good Luck everyone!!!
EDIT
For prime counts, the following projects produce more but smaller primes:
- PPSE/PPS BOINC
- PPSE port 12007 in PRPNet
- SGS in BOINC and port 12000 in PRPNet
As for prime scores, all the BOINC LLR and PRPNet projects are fair game.

Hope it fits!

Barely half way I know but I've been away most of the month but thought I'd pop up to say even tho' didn't have all the computers running I got a slightly less poor result than you, John M Johnson, in the challenge.
Poor old Hester by the way is an ill rat but not I think life threatening. I expect she'd welcome tickles behind the ear and yoghurt drops whether real or virtual.
Away again for most of the rest of he month.
Cheers!

The Challenge was supposed to compliment the Tour de Primes. However, with PRPNet being down, it has created a discouraging wrinkle.
The "mountain" stage was on the 17th. However, PRPNet was down during the entire stage and remains down. It would have been ideal to have PRPNet up and running for the "mountain" stage. Are there any objections to moving it to the 23rd or should we just accept the results of the 17th?
Thanks for your feedback.

Hmmm...tough call...
On the one hand, those participating in PRPNet only are excluded, which would seem to be unfair (*note that this is not true for non-challenge BOINC participants who could have continued on with SGS, etc. for the Tour).
On the other hand, the PPSE was also disabled on the BOINC side of things, so in some ways the playing field would have been unfair had PRPNet been up (i.e., the find rate (in number) for PPSE, whether in BOINC or PRPNet, is much higher than for PPS, though the prime scores for the latter are higher).
...I think I would extend the analogy here (e.g., bikes breakdown, the weather changes, hot vs. cold days, etc. with the actual sporting event) and say the results from the 17th should stand.

Are there any objections to moving it to the 23rd or should we just accept the results of the 17th?
"c'est la vie", the 17th stands.

Hey i am still at fourth place despite the outages and glitches the last week?
And i haven't found a prime since the start of the challenge... |
|
|
|
Maybee the 760+k WUs should be put on hold?
The following warnings have been noted:
* At the rate at which primes have been added to this list in the past, the 147604 digit prime "7313*2^490317+1" may only be on the list for about 1 weeks.
The challenge nearly killed the short WUs fort the Top-5000.

Tour de Primes Update
Just over 2 days remain and what a difference 24 hours make. With the help of one PPS prime and one PPSE prime, Lumiukko has overtaken fellow teammate Lennart in the race for the green jersey. A bold move, reminiscent of Contador's move on Armstrong. :) Let's see if there's enough left in the tank to make it to the end.
Best of luck to everyone.

My primecount today rose by two. Har.
What a performance regarding my position last year, my flawed appearance in the YOTT-Challenge and the hickups afterwards driving me to offline ppseSieve for some hours after having run dry on several occasions.

I'm pretty happy too - just submitted 3 primes to make my total 8 - compared to a great big fat zero last year!

The Tour de Primes 2010 has ended!!!
Lennart broke tradition and made a challenge on the Champs-Élysées to take both the yellow and green jerseys. To be fair, the yellow jersey was solidly his since about 7 Feb. It was the green jersey that was up for grabs. Nevertheless, the teammates from the PrimeSearchTeam (Lennart and Lumiukko) celebrated with some champagne. Congratulations to the jersey winners:
Much like Armstrong, Lennart is constantly under suspicion. His machines were pulled aside and inspected again this year. Other than a few over clocked quads and some new i7's, nothing abnormal was detected. It seems as though he really is just that good! :)
A total of 309 primes made the Top 5000 prime list for the month of February. The most primes ever in a month by a single effort. Top producers are below; complete stats can be viewed in the first post.
A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who participated. This concludes the Tour de Primes 2010. See you next year!!! :)
The Ides of March Challenge comes up on the 15th. If you're looking for something to do between now and then, we'd really like to wrap up the PSP LLR DC effort. Currently there's just over 2200 WU's left in the queue. All help is appreciated.

Congratulations to Lennart!...I need to get some faster machines. ;)
@John
Just curious, wouldn't the completed workunits that had not been double-checked still be counted as primes "found" during February? So these are now all completed? If so, wow! A much quicker clean-up than the challenge!

"Found" primes are returned primes. Yes, this means everyone is at the mercy of their double checker. Only consolation is that everyone is in the same boat.
The only real effect this has is in the score category...should someone find a mega prime that takes a while for the DC to complete. The outcome of the count and mountain stage are minimally impacted.
This is an informal competition. Should it grow more competitively next year, we'll definitely add more stringent measures. At the very least, we'll keep the score category contingent upon completion of all work.
