training at HMS Impregnable, Devonport, Plymouth probably on the
first of the three 'Impregnables' there at the time all acting as
training ships.

June 25th - on board HMS Edgar which at the time was part of the
10th Cruiser Squadron Northern Patrol whose aim was to maintain
the blockade of the North Sea, its patrol area extending from the
Norwegian coast far into the Atlantic and covering all approaches
to the European continent from a northerly direction. Would probably
have been involved in undertaking lone patrols, and later, convoy
escort duties. The squadron consisted mainly of Armed Merchant Cruisers,
commissioned to relieve the regular Navy cruisers. |

September 17th - on AMC Edinburgh Castle (Armed Merchant Cruiser).
This was a merchant cruiser requisitioned by the Royal Navy on the
12th September 1914, just 5 days before Sidney joined it. This was
one of many auxillary cruisers commissioned by the Royal Navy. |

December 11th - on HMS Lancaster. An armoured cruiser with fourteen
6-inch guns, HMS Lancaster entered service in April 1904. Following
the German defeat off the Falkland Islands in December 1914, she
joined the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow. However in July 1915 she proceeded
to Chatham for a prolonged refit.

came back on the Lancaster which returned to Chatham for a refit
at this time. |

August 7th - on HMS Latona. In 1915 the HMS Latona became a depot
ship in the Mediterranean. Sidney then spent the next two and a
half years or more on the Latona, presumably somewhere in the Mediterranean.

from an Estate comprising some land called "Wayside" at Danaway,
Sittingbourne, Kent. This belonged to Rose Ann Durrant (nee Mugridge)
who may have died intestate as it took 12 years to finally settle the
