NAVY YEARS:
1913 October 13th - aged 15 - enlisted as Boy 2nd Class. Served his initial training at HMS Impregnable, Devonport, Plymouth probably on the first of the three 'Impregnables' there at the time all acting as training ships.
1914 June7th - advanced to Boy 1st Class whilst still at Impregnable.

HMS Impregnable (formerly HMS Howe)

1914 June 25th - on board HMS Edgar which at the time was part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron Northern Patrol whose aim was to maintain the blockade of the North Sea, its patrol area extending from the Norwegian coast far into the Atlantic and covering all approaches to the European continent from a northerly direction. Would probably have been involved in undertaking lone patrols, and later, convoy escort duties. The squadron consisted mainly of Armed Merchant Cruisers, commissioned to relieve the regular Navy cruisers.

1914 September 17th - on AMC Edinburgh Castle (Armed Merchant Cruiser). This was a merchant cruiser requisitioned by the Royal Navy on the 12th September 1914, just 5 days before Sidney joined it. This was one of many auxillary cruisers commissioned by the Royal Navy.

Sidney serving on HMS Lancaster
1914 December 11th - on HMS Lancaster. An armoured cruiser with fourteen 6-inch guns, HMS Lancaster entered service in April 1904. Following the German defeat off the Falkland Islands in December 1914, she joined the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow. However in July 1915 she proceeded to Chatham for a prolonged refit.

1924 August 2nd - Married at St.Edwards Parish Church, Romford. Living at 49 Market Place, Romford, Essex. Occupation - painter.




Occupation - in 1925, House Painter living at 2 Wellington Terrace, Kensington Road, Romford, Essex (Birth certificate of Douglas George, son).

Occupation - in 1954, Decorator living at 19 Malvern Road, Hornchurch, Essex

8/8/1966 - Occupation given as Machine Operator, retired of 19 Malvern Road, Hornchurch, Essex - death certificate of his wife Jane Elizabeth

1966 Dec 9th - Received some Inheritance. See below.*

*He was left some money from an Estate comprising some land called "Wayside" at Danaway, Sittingbourne, Kent. This belonged to Rose Ann Durrant (nee Mugridge) who may have died intestate as it took 12 years to finally settle the matter. SEE THE DANAWAY DOCUMENTS.

07/06/1969 - Died at Prospect Park Hospital, Reading. CERTIFICATE.
