Scrappy Hexies by Halves and other Quilt Progress this Weekend

This was past weekend was pretty productive quilt-wise around here.  My parents came to town along with my Nana.  My mom participated in the Hexies by Halves Quilt-Along, but life got busy and she didn't finish...until a few weeks ago.  She brought the finished quilt up, so we could take some photos.

The weather cooperated and gave us a nice sunny afternoon.  (Man! I'm looking forward to the coming spring days.  I didn't realize how much I was missing the sun.)

One of the things I love about my mom's quilt is that she did it completely from scraps...and the scraps don't really coordinate at all, but they make a lovely finished quilt.  She made sure to choose some bold/dark colors, bright colors, and low volume prints.

She also made sure to choose some large scale prints and small scale prints, to give the quilt a lot of interest without being too busy.  She's got everything from calico to Hawaiian to Japanese symbols, to La Leche League fabric in there and more.

And she needed a bit of extra width for the back, but wanted to keep it as simple as possible, so she just made one strip of half-hexies end to end.  Then instead of making a straight strip, she made it slanted.  (We'll make a modern quilter out of her yet!)

This was her first time using basting spray, and she did a great job.

My mom doesn't have a craft blog, but she does post the occasional craft project.  If you're looking for something else to do with scraps, you should check out her tutorial for making these fun fabric balls.

If you'd like to make your own Hexies by Halves Quilt...Scrappy or otherwise, you can go to my Etsy Shop here to purchase the pattern.  I also have a few finished hexie quilts available for purchase here.

And even though we had family in town, I was still able to get some sewing done.  While my mom was grading papers, I got the machine quilting and binding done on my Glasses and Greens Quilt for the Modern Quilt Guild Riley Blake Challenge (more details here) and available in my shop here.

We had an extra long weekend since Monday was Presidents' Day.  It felt so good to get the Glasses and Greens quilt done that I went ahead and made more progress on my newest Dr. Seuss Quilt.  (A big thank you and shout out to Deanna from Heart at Home Mama.  She saw my in progress pictures on my Facebook page and send me the red truffula fabric...perfect touch to bring some balance.)
I tend to stick pretty close to 45x60 for a lot of my quilts, but decided to make this one a little larger and added and extra row to the width.

As of last night, I've got the top sewn together.  Now I just need to figure out a fun and simple pieced back
If you want to follow along and see what I'm working on day-to-day, be sure to follow me on Instragram @PiecesbyPolly (you can click through that link to see some fun pictures from our weekend).  I'm also post more pictures to my Pieces by Polly Facebook page these days than I do to my older Helping Little Hands Facebook page, so be sure you've "liked" the new one.

  3. Thanks for the shout-out Polly. I hadn't realized until you mentioned it, but I really do love scrappy projects - from quilts to little fabric balls. I guess they're a good fit with my 100+ year-old farmhouse. :) I bought some of the drapery clips from Joann's and I'm going to hang the quilt. The hexie pattern was great - simple to sew, but it looks complex - I'm pretty proud of the finished product!

  4. Love your Mom's quilt! I didn't like scrappy for a long long time, but it's really growing on me as I get older (maybe 'cause of the growing scrap pile in the sewing room).!-)
