+------------------------------+ | IMPORTANT - READ THIS FIRST | +------------------------------+ MEMO TO USERS - SERVICEPAK XR06200 __________________________________ Memorandum to: Licensees of OS/2 Operating System Subject: ServicePak for Release 2.10 Enclosed is the IBM OS/2(*) 2.1 ServicePak, XR06200. It contains two important files you should view before you start the "Service" procedure. They are the README.INS and README.SP1 files. The README.INS file contains late breaking information about installation considerations, and the README.SP1 file contains late breaking informa- tion about OS/2 general system considerations. Both of these files are located on the Installation Diskette 1 of the 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch diskettes. An additional file, the XR06200.XRF file contains detailed information on what is fixed by this ServicePak. This file is located on Diskette 13 of the 3.5-inch diskettes, Diskette 15 of the 5.25-inch diskettes, and in the \FIX\OS2 directory on the CD-ROM. You can view the README.INS, README.SP1, and XR06200.XRF files on your display with a text editor; or you can print the files by doing the following: Insert Installation Diskette 1 into drive A _______________________ Type PRINT A:README.INS or README.SP1 and then press Enter. OR Insert Diskette 13 for 3.5-", or Diskette 15 for 5.25-" media Into Drive A: Type PRINT A:XR06200.XRF and then press Enter. Also, XR06200 includes the latest version of the SVGA Display Drivers on Display Drivers Diskettes 1 through 3 of 3.5-inch diskettes, Display Drivers Diskettes 1 through 3 of the 5.25-inch diskettes. If you need infor- mation about CD-ROM support, please view the README.INS file. If you want information on the updates to the OS/2 2.1 publications, it is available in a .ZIP file through the following electronic services: o IBM OS2BBS (1-800-547-1283, in software download library) o Compuserve (GO IBMSERV, under 21 menu) o IBM PCCBBS (1-919-517-0001) o Internet (anonymous FTP from "software.watson.ibm.com", in "/pub/os2" directory) o Prodigy (in the OS/2 Clubs' download library under IBM Information) SERVICEPAK XR06200 __________________ GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION Before installing XR06200, run CHKDSK /F on your OS/2 partition to ensure that your system does not currently have any corrupted files. To run CHKDSK: 1. Insert the base operating system Installation Diskette (not the ServicePak Installation Diskette) into drive A. 2. Shut down and restart the system. 3. When the IBM screen appears, remove the Installation Diskette and insert the base operating system Diskette 1; then press Enter. 4. When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to display the command prompt. 5. Remove Diskette 1 and insert base operating system Diskette 2. 6. Type "CHKDSK x: /F" (where x is the drive letter of your OS/2 system par- tition). SERVICEPAK XR06200 INSTALLATION You can install the ServicePak from either the XR06200 INSTALLATION DISKETTES or the XR06200 CD-ROM. Diskette Installation If you are installing from the XR06200 Installation Diskettes, you can choose from the following two procedures: PROCEDURE 1: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO ALL PARTITIONS. Use this procedure if you want to apply the service updates to all the partitions that contain OS/2 2.1. If your system has an AOX adapter installed, you should use this procedure. PROCEDURE 2: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO THE SELECTED PAR- TITIONS. Use this procedure if you do not want to apply the service updates to all the partitions that contain OS/2 2.1. PROCEDURE 1: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO ALL PARTITIONS NOTE: Dual Boot users must boot into OS/2 prior to fol- lowing this procedure. 1. Shut down your system. Do not go back to DOS if con- figured as a Dual-Boot system. 2. When the shutdown is complete, insert ServicePak XR06200 Diskette 1 into drive A. 3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. PROCEDURE 2: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO SELECTED 1. Select an OS/2 command-prompt object from the Command Prompts folder in the OS/2 System folder. 2. Insert the ServicePak Diskette 1 into drive A. 3. Type "A:\SERVICE" at the OS/2 command prompt; then press Enter. 4. Select OK to display a list of the OS/2 2.1 products installed on your system. (For example, if OS/2 2.1 is in more than one partition, the OS/2 2.1 base product will be listed and selected more than once.) 5. Deselect one or more products that you do not want to update. 6. Select Service and then select Continue to update all directories in each selected product. If you do not want to update all directories in each selected product, select Cancel. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. CD-ROM Installation If you are installing from the XR06200 CD-ROM, do the following: NOTE: Dual Boot users must boot into OS/2 prior to fol- lowing this procedure. NOTE: The CD-ROM installation will apply service updates to all of the partitions that contain OS/2 2.1. If you do not wish to update all OS/2 2.1 partitions, you will need to create diskettes from the CD. For instructions on how to create these diskettes, see the "Creating Diskettes from the XR06200 CD" section. Also, multimedia (MMPM/2) support can be installed directly from the CD-ROM. If you want to create diskettes for the multimedia support that is part of OS/2 2.1, note that the images are located in the \DISKIMG\MMPM2 directory. For instructions on how to create these diskettes, see the "Creating Diskettes from the XR06200 CD" section. NOTES: 1. You should not stop the update process after it starts. 2. When you install on some OS/2 pre-installed systems, you might receive a message that files on the hard disk are newer than those being installed. Select Yes if you are prompted with this error message. 3. ServicePak (XR06200) should not be installed on OS/2 2.1 for Windows systems. It should be applied to OS/2 2.1 systems only. To install: 1. Shut down your system. Do not go back to DOS if con- figured as a Dual-Boot system. 2. Insert the ServicePak XR06200 Diskette 1 into Drive A, and insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3. Press and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Del to restart the system. 4. At a prompt, remove Diskette 1, insert Diskette 2 and press Enter. 5. When prompted, remove Diskette 2 from the drive and press Enter. 6. When the installation is finished, you will be prompted to remove the CD and restart the system. If you do not have an OS/2 supported CD-ROM drive, you can create installation diskettes from the diskette images that are on the OS/2 CD, if you have DOS support for your CD-ROM drive. CREATING DISKETTES FROM THE XR06200 CD You use the LOADDSKF utility program to create the diskettes. (LOADDSKF.EXE is in the \DISKIMGS directory of the CD. LOADDSKF can be run from either the DOS or OS/2 operating system.) In the following sections, you will see lists of the service diskettes for XR06200 and the actual diskette names as they exist on the CD. For each diskette image file, use LOADDSKF to expand the image to its own diskette. (Note that you must use formatted diskettes for this procedure.) For example: cddrive:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF cddrive:\DISKIMGS\OS2\size\disk_name d: where: cddrive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM _______ size is 35 for 3.5-inch 1.44MB diskettes or 525 for ____ 5.25-inch 1.2MB diskettes disk_name is the diskette image file name (for _________ example, DISK1.DSK, PMDD1.DSK.) d is the drive letter of your diskette drive (A: or _ B:) After you create all the diskettes (21 for 3.5-inch diskettes or 25 for 5.25-inch diskettes), refer to the Diskette Installation portion of this document for installation instructions.
