Here’s a quick and budget-friendly way to create an easy fall pillow using Dollar Tree felt cut outs.
I actually only spent a dollar for this project because I already had all the other supplies on hand from other projects. Yay me!
Before we get started, for all you non-sewers out there, it is possible to use fabric glue for this project. However, the pillow will last longer if you sew it together. And if you’re a beginner sewer, rejoice that there’s no zipper or buttons because this is a simple envelope pillow.
Easy Fall Pillow
Supplies:
- painter’s cloth or cotton fabric
- iron
- sewing machine
- thread
- large felt cutout (found at Dollar Tree)
- measuring tape/ruler
- scissors
- pillow insert 20×20 or appropriate size for felt applique & pillow insert
How to Make an Easy Fall Pillow
Step 1. Cut out the pillow pieces. I cut a 20″ x 20″ piece and two 14″ x 20″ back pieces to fit my pillow insert. If you have a different size pillow insert, cut the pillow pieces to fit your pillow AND felt cutouts. Make sure to leave at least a 1″ seam allowance.
Step 2. Iron your painter’s cloth or fabric if it’s wrinkled. Next, finish off one the long edge of the back pieces. This will be the pieces for the opening of the envelope closure.
Step 3. Pin your felt applique in the middle of the 20″x 20″ square and begin to sew around all the cut out edges. I stitched about 3/8″ from the edge of the felt applique. You can use contrasting thread or the same color thread as your applique – it’s up to you.
Step 4. Once you have sewn around all the edges of the felt piece, pin the right sides of the front and backs flaps of the pillow together. Sew along all four edges. If you have a serger, finish off the edges here or zig-zag stitch around the edges to prevent unraveling/fraying. **Just make sure the right sides are facing each other when you sew along the edges**
Step 5. Turn right side out and insert the pillow into the cover. Easy peasy! And the best part is that I can easily change and store these when I’m not using them.
Aren’t those cute?! I plan on making more for Halloween ones with some glow in the dark paint and Christmas ones too! Will you be adding themed pillows to your fall decor?
I think these are probably the cutest pillow covers I’ve ever seen <3 You did a great job with them 🙂

Erlene, what a great idea. I’d never thought about using these felt images this way. In the shop they always look overly bright to me. But on your pillows they look fabulous. Thank you so much for coming to party with us and linking them up in our party. Appreciate it. (Please don’t forget to link back to the party, so I could potentially feature you next week… A simple text link is fine.)
Thanks for coming over. I linked back.

Oh gosh these are so cute. So simple, even I can do them. I also need to make one of those picture frame calendars!
Great pillows. I like that they are interchangable.
What cute pillows – and a great tutorial. I love the versatility of your project making it perfect for any season or holiday.
Thanks Karen. I like that it’s so easy, can store this pillow case flat, and I can use an existing pillow to keep cost down.
Those are adorable! You could sell them! Thanks for linking up to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party! I’ve pinned you post to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Board.
This is so cute! I love decorating for Fall, so I need to make this.
What a cute idea, I’ve never thought of that! I see those cute little felt animals and pumpkins at the dollar store every fall, but never know what to do with them. Great job! 🙂 Visiting from WWBH! 🙂
I used to stare at them too…lol. I use to pass by the cut outs, but now I’ve started picking them up and remaking them into lots of different things. The plus is that the cut outs are large and make a big impact for a little money. A win win in my book 🙂
Adorable pillows! Thank you for sharing on The Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop!
Thanks so much for stopping by and hosting your midweek party.
So cute and easy- love that! Thank you so much for linking up at Snickerdoodle Sunday- I hope you’ll come back this weekend and link up your newest makes & bakes! 🙂
Sarah (Sadie Seasongoods)
Thank you. I’ll stop by and link up something new.
What a cute decor craft! I wish I could sew! I’ll have to give these a try with some heat transfer vinyl! Thanks for the inspiration! #ibabloggers
I bet you could do a lot of cute designs with vinyl. I’d love to see your designs if you do make one.
I was sure I commented on these Erlene. So darling!! Pinned.
Thanks Elizabeth for pinning and sharing 🙂
Your pillows are really cute!! I will try with the no-sew version! Just pinned!!
If you do the no sew version, make sure you use fabric glue 🙂
I love how these pillows turned out — adorable! I would definitely go for the no-sew version myself. Thanks so much for sharing at Snickerdoodle! 🙂
These are so easy to make. I would use an iron on adhesive for the felt and fabric glue around the pillow edges if you do make a no sew version.
Erlene- these are so cute. Will you link this to Friday Favorites today or this weekend? I love the stuff that you can find at dollar tree!! laura
Thanks Laura. Yes I’ll come by and link up. Thanks for the invite.
These look very cute 🙂
Thank you.
