Rail Fence on the Horizon

 

Occasionally, I see a fence that runs along the edge of a low plateau.

 

 Everything seemed perfect that day.....it was early spring, the bluebonnets had just started to appear.

First Look, Beautiful Trees....Second Look, More Interesting

 

The Great Blue Heron....

If you photograph a lot, you know exactly what I am talking about. This is especially true when it is a farm pond.

 

 

I originally stopped because of the pond and the interesting tree shapes.

 

 

Then, I saw a bird standing near the water. I watched for some time...not one movement.

 

So, I went back to the truck to review my photos. The more I looked at the above photo, the more I thought a statue of a bird had been placed near the water.

 

 

For a few more minutes, the heron stayed motionless. And, then he began to move, taking slow deliberate steps.

 

At first I thought he had detected me. Now, I think he simply was on the hunt for breakfast.

 

 

I would have moved closer, but this sign kept me at a distance.

 

According to the Texas Audubon, "The Great Blue heron is the largest of the North American herons, standing 45-54 inches tall, with a wingspan of 66-79 inches.

When hunting, they can be seen standing statue-like as they stalk fish and other small prey"

 

Isn't he a beauty?

Discovering a Forest in Your Backyard

 

If you have been following my blog for a while, my dear readers, you know my story begins on the Blackland Prairies of Texas. Owning a farm has been one of the highlights of my life. It was my opportunity to nurture the "country girl" in me.

 

 

I've shared many fence stories and scenes like the above...round bales of hay, bright sunshine, and blue skies and horizons that seem to go on forever.

 

That story is changing again for me. Living closer to family has become a priority.

 

Waking up in a totally different part of Texas, has promised to be challenging.

 

 

The roads are taking a different turn....the scenery has definitely changed.

 

 

And, now I have a forest to discover....

 

 

Today has been my first up-close look at what I might find.

 

 

One thing, for sure, I would never have encountered a logging truck on the Prairie.

 

It has taken me no time to figure out...

 

 

there will always be fences.

A Fairy Tale View on Good Fences

 

A Castle in Scotland....not today !

 

To me, the barbed wire fence and bluebonnets, shout "Texas".

 

 

Even the windows remind me of some of the stone castles I saw on my recent holiday, in Scotland.

 

Looking closer, I see the walls are Texas Limestone.

 

 

I was totally surprised when I spotted the structure. It is on one of the country roads I frequently travel.

A Different Kind of Thursday Show and Tell

 

Usually I show something vintage on Thursday. Instead, here is a bundle of squirming, playful joy, only a few weeks old.

 

 

 

Meet Mr Bates....a very big name for such a pint-size pet.

 

He is a puppy, of mixed breed, that belongs to my son's family. You can measure his size by the Sweet Gum Tree leaf, lying beside him.

 

 

Already spoiled...and full of mischief !
