In 1989, as I cut white fabric figures into a teardrop like shape, it reminded me of the paisley print fabric I’d earlier purchased. While in the fabric store, I’d been drawn to the burgundy paisley print and purchased it without a plan for how it would fit into my new work.

My new work had changed from the bound black, white, and grey figures of the previous year.

The new figures I was creating were white and much lighter in spirit. But they still had no arms or legs. They had not yet found a place to land, an inner healing, and a grounding in self.

As I prepared to choose a background for these white floating figures, the paisley fabric seemed a perfect fit. The curved teardrop shape of the paisley is similar to the white figures.

With no internet to look up information, I did not know the origins of paisley or its spiritual and symbolic meaning.

In India, the paisley signified the time of harvest, a time of both socio-economic and spiritual…
