If history has taught us anything about art, it is that the definition of what constitutes art is forever being challenged and broadened. In the last 2-3 decades there has been an explosion of interest in non-traditional art including outsider art, primitive art, ephemera, memorabilia, and historical artifacts. Since the first major auctions at Christie’s in the early 1990s, vintage posters and lithographs have been steadily increasing in value, often outperforming the market, and are increasingly viewed as a way to diversify an investment portfolio. At the same time traditional art has skyrocketed in value – so much so that it is beyond the reach of everyday collectors. World-class traditional art can cost millions for a single piece, while world-class lithos can be had starting for as little as a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Vintage posters offer an amazing confluence of stunning art, historical significance, and proven value as asset class.
