The Week

by Marinka on September 29, 2012

I don’t want to alarm anyone unnecessarily, but I have a sore throat.

I don’t even know who to blame.

Or how to best milk it.

I decided to stay in bed all day, but now the kids are arguing about who gets to do the laundry. “You did it last time!” one of them hush-yelled to the other so as not to disturb my rest.

“That’s not fair!” the other one signed, “you already got to scrub the toilet bowl!”

But at least I’m reading a book that I love. It’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette and it’s funny and smart and if you have kids in school with sanctimommies very relatable. So thumbs up! (Also, Amazon affiliate link.)  I’m also worried because my book group is reading Telegraph Avenue next and I read five pages and I don’t like it. Please tell me that just like high school, it gets better.

Here are some other things I wrote this week!

What Happens When You Leave the Camera Behind

If You Spank, I Have Some Questions for You

When a Child You Don’t Know Breaks Your Heart

Mouthing Off: Smash Cakes (I co-wrote this with my fellow Mouthies!)

I Volunteered to be Class Mom, How Do I Get Out of It?

What about you? What have you read/written this week that I should be reading/plagiarizing?

Killer

by Marinka on September 27, 2012

It’s not easy for the ESL these days.

The other day Mama had a question for me.

“I need an opinion that belongs to you,” she said. And then she told me that she read a review of “the new F and X show” where “Britney is judge” and the review said that “Britney killed it.”  Mama was confused by this and first asked Papa.

Papa reasoned that this was a negative review of Britney’s performance because killing is bad.  Papa’s moral code is very Biblical, apparently.

Mama agreed but then she watched the show and thought Britney did a great job so how could review be so wrong. This led to confusion and to thought that “killed it” was actually very good.

Young Ladrinka confirmed for Mama that killing is fantastic and something that everyone should strive for in their every day life and interactions.

That’s when she sought my counsel.

“You agree with this killing?” she asked.

And yes, I did.

When I had to miss Shari’s Voice of the Year at BlogHer this summer, Wendi texted me, “Shari’s killing it.” At first I was excited because I thought that Wendi was trying to activate a new business -Alibis R Us, a service that would help out people (of means) who happen to need someone to vouch for their whereabouts if the heat came calling, but unfortunately, she just meant that Shari’s reading was awesome.

So that was a lesson learned.

“Why can’t the Wendi just say that Sharon did a good job?” Mama asked when I related this story to her. (I did however notice a twinkle in her eye when I mentioned the Alibis R Us part, so the business may be up and running sooner than expected!)

I admit that I didn’t have a good answer.

Killing used to have a negative connotation. The Killing Fields. Psycho Killer. A Killer Among Us.

Now it is a big compliment.

What’s next?

“Have a wonderful day with many killings!”

“Hey, you, killer, you!”

“Come here, I’m going to  kill!”

I wonder if murder is next.

“I thought she killed it, but only manslaughter in the first degree, nothing premeditated.”

“Really? I was going to give it nothing less than Murder One. As a matter of fact, I was hoping she’d get the death penalty for it, it was THAT GREAT.”

See? It really is hard for the ESL.

Just an FYI

September 26, 2012

If a colleague brings in some photos of her kids and offers to show them to you, saying “fine, let’s just get this over with” is frowned upon no matter how much you insist that you did not say those words out loud but must have been just thinking them really hard and if she […]

Why Not

September 24, 2012

I know I haven’t been blogging as much lately, but that’s because I’ve been really busy. Nothing earth shattering, it’s just that I decided to become an Olympic swimmer. (Wait is it Olympic swimmer or OlympicS swimmer? Does it matter if I’m planning on swimming in more than one Olympics? Do I have to commit […]

Crisis

September 20, 2012

OMG, honey, something terrible happened. The freezer made this deafening sound, it was very apocalyptic, and then, are you sitting down and surrounded by loved ones who are not whores? And then it stopped working? What do you mean it stopped working? Yes, you’re in shock. Words no longer make sense. World doesn’t spin. What […]

Loving Words

September 17, 2012

This fall is my fifteenth wedding anniversary. By a wild coincidence, it’s also Husbandrinka’s, so I started celebrating already by thinking of all the things he can do to improve our relationship, writing all the suggestions in a notebook, tying a ribbon around it and presenting it to him in lieu of a gift. Is […]

I’m Right and He’s Wrong

September 11, 2012

Yesterday I almost killed Husbandrinka. Mostly because I thought he was already dead or worse. Having an affair. Ok, so maybe an affair is not worse than dead, unless she’s less attractive than I am, because I’m not sure that I could live with that humiliation. But this isn’t about which one would have been […]
