Winter-Harbor
is located on Frenchman Bay in Hancock County and the southern part of town is occupied by a portion of Acadia National Park on Schoodic Point. Winter Harbor is home to two nature preserves: Schoodic Island, a 61-acre nesting site for bald eagles and sea birds managed by Acadia National Park and The Nature Conservancy. The second nature preserve is Turtle Island, which is almost entirely covered by a 150-year old spruce-fir forest, which maintains a colony of great blue herons. The interior of this preserve is closed during the nesting season. Described as a "classic Maine lobster village," Winter Harbor maintains an active lobster fleet with very few retail or commercial establishments. A small U.S. Navy installation lies a few miles south of the village toward Schoodic Point. Places of interest include Grindstone Neck, which is a community of exclusive waterfront "cottages" built at the end of the 19th century by affluent members of New York and Philadelphia "society." The Grindstone Neck Association maintains a 9-hole oceanfront golf course and clubhouse, which is said to have some of the most scenic golfing in New England. Limited public access is available at certain times and the association also has a yacht club located on the west shore of inner Winter Harbor. Membership is limited to Grindstone Neck residences, but docking and overnight moorings are available to visiting vessels.

Southeast Maine , along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a distinct four-season climate. This area, often referred to as "Downeast Maine," includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Visitors are advised to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions in this part of Maine because the climate is highly changeable. Temperatures in summer can range as much as 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter fog or rain at any time. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. This moisture occurs in every form at Acadia National Park. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches.
