thanksgiving table inspiration

it's hard to believe that thanksgiving is just over a week away.  this fall is flying by so fast.  since thanksgiving is right around the corner, here is some table inspiration if you are hosting . . .

metallic gold pumpkins and gold glittered pine cones
an assortment of colorful mini pumpkins as a table runner
a fresh mini loaf of bread at each place setting
hand drawn place settings
simple white candles among fresh apples and eucalyptus

checking in

let's call this an end-of-the-week check in . . . are we all still here?  did we all survive this week?

- i'm not discussing the election, but wow it was exhausting.  truth be told, the only thing that got me through this election without going crazy was saturday night live's election skits.

- the nation has been in a weird mood since the election results came out, and i don't blame the nation one bit.  i think we're all still trying to figure out how to navigate the hand we've been dealt for the next four years.  regardless of our current feelings regarding the country/politics this week, let us not forget that today is veterans day.

- the stomach flu got me good this week.  i learned more about the stomach flu in the past few days than i ever cared to learn, and i'm tired of the "b.r.a.t." stomach-flu-approved diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast).  i am finally starting to feel a bit better (although the thoughts/sights/smells of most foods are still making me nauseous).  all i want is a pizza, but i know my stomach can't handle that just yet.  baby steps, laura ann . . . baby steps.

- i still have a large bowl full of apples sitting on my kitchen counter looking at me.  i think i have consumed more apples this fall than ever before.  i'm running out of creative things to do with the apples, send help!

- in the past 3 weeks, i have seen the chiropractor 3 times.  (prior to 3 weeks ago, the last time i saw a chiropractor was 2 decades ago.)  after a lot of back-and-forth, i think my misplaced left hip joint is finally back in place and my dislocated right rib cage is back where it is supposed to be.  thank goodness for small miracles.  dance sure is rough on your body!

- speaking of dance, we're in full christmas show mode.  i don't typically like to listen to christmas songs before december 1st, but i have to make an exception when it comes to rehearsing christmas routines for dance.

- most importantly, it's friday and we have very few plans for this weekend.  thank heavens, because the next few weekends are really packed.

have a wonderful weekend!

pocono cupcake challenge

ryan and i absolutely love to bake and we really enjoy decorating our baked goods.  so on sunday, we headed down to the poconos to check out the 5th annual pocono cupcake challenge at the historic shawnee inn.

professional bakers, home bakers, and youth bakers from around the area volunteered to bake and donate cupcakes which were judged and awarded in different categories.  it was fun to check out all of the creations and it was for a good cause too since the event benefited the united way.

admission was free, but a $10 donation to the united way got you 4 cupcakes of your choice.  we walked around to view all of the displays and picked 4 cupcakes to bring home with us.  out of all of the displays, our favorite was the willy wonka display.  (i thought that those oompa loompa suspenders and hairdos on the cupcakes were so cute!)

on our way home, we stopped by my parents' house to share our cupcakes with them.  the 4 cupcakes we tried were: spumoni, pumpkin chai spice, vanilla filled with raspberry chipotle topped with white chocolate, and banana walnut topped with peanut butter and chocolate.  after our taste test, we all agreed that our favorite was the pumpkin chai spice cupcake.

paging doctor leko

out of nowhere, i got hit hard with some sort of stomach bug.  the past 36 hours have been no joke.  the only thing that has been getting me through has been this gorgeous little furry kitten doctor of mine.  he is the best medicine!

i sat down on the couch yesterday for a bit and wrapped myself under two blankets because i was freezing cold.  he jumped up on my lap and cuddled for awhile on top of the blankets before he went in between the two blankets to make a little tunnel for himself.

what a cutie!

how much is that kitty in the window . . .

over the last six years that we have owned our house, we have never been without some type of a project.  it seems like there is always something that needs attention, especially when you own an old home from the 1930s.

our home still has its original windows.  we know that we could replace them with modern energy-efficient windows, but we really love the charm of those old wooden ones.  since they're old and wood, they needed a lot of attention.

last fall, we started working on our "window project" and we successfully tackled 11 of our 15 wooden windows.  it was a major project and it took forever.  we didn't get to finish the last 4 windows before the winter set in and the weather got to be gross.  lately, we've been trying to get as much work done as possible outside before winter comes again.

whenever we do a project we always like to take before and after pictures for our home scrapbook.  before tackling our 2 front porch windows, ryan took a before photo of them.  when i went back to look at the photo he took on his phone, i just about died laughing at what i saw looking back out of the window.  leko was perched inside the window with the funniest expression on his face.  oh, it was priceless!  that guy sure keeps us in stitches.

remember that old song "how much is that doggie in the window?"  that's all i could think of when i saw this picture.  here is a zoomed-in version of that face . . .

i'm pleased to say that our windows look much better now than they did in these pictures.  thanks for all of your hard work, ryan!!!

dance, dance

it's really hard to believe that we're just a month away from our holiday dance show.  time is whizzing by so quickly.  here are two pictures that our dance studio director snapped on her phone recently.  the first is from an early morning saturday ballet class when we were working at the barre, and the second is from our little halloween celebration between classes.  it's a bit hard to dance in class in full halloween costume, so the junior/senior girls just wore a few costume accessories (except for one of our girls who actually came in a full white swan ballet costume from swan lake, it was pretty cute).

in other news, leko is pretty excited that halloween and trick-or-treat are both now over, and that i'm no longer wearing that gold wig!

happy wednesday!

halloween 2016

oh my goodness, we had such an awesome halloween yesterday!!!  ryan and i were both like two little kids all day, we were so excited.  as soon as work was over, we ran home to get ready before the trick-or-treaters arrived.  we put on our costumes and put out the last-minute decorations.

in total we handed out candy to 171 trick-or-treaters.  we had so much fun handing out candy and seeing all of the different costumes that the kids were wearing.  here are a few pictures from halloween at our house last night . . .

^ryan dressed up as a construction worker this year.  every piece of his costume was something that he already had at home, so it didn't cost him a penny.  that's the way to do costumes, if you ask us!^
^i have been wanting to dress up as cleopatra for a while, so i was really excited to get to do it this year.  i pieced together this costume from my mom's old costume pieces and a few dance pieces that i had.  i wore my mom's black turtle-neck leotard with my egyptian-themed tank-top leotard over it.  i wore two of my mom's old belly dancing skirts, her belly dancing belt, her gold celopatra wig, and two of her gold arm bands.  of course i did my make up to match too.  i channeled my inner elizabeth taylor with all of that blue eye shadow and black winged eye liner.^
^ryan's decorating theme this year was orange and purple (my two favorite colors).  he set up four theatre lights on our porch, two with orange gels and two with purple gels.  the colors looked so awesome shining on our white porch.  he also set up orange and purple lanterns on the deck, an orange and purple spider web on the window, and orange and purple gummy letters on the front door.  it all looked so cool in person once it got dark outside.  our decorations and our costumes were huge hits.  we got so many compliments from everyone!^
^leko kept a really close eye on the trick-or-treaters from inside our living room.  he was able to look out the front door and the front windows to watch.  i desperately wanted to get a picture of me holding him because his costume was "cleopatra's kitten."  however, he was pretty freaked out by my wig.  he knew it was me, but he kept looking at me funny as if to say, "mom, are you sure that's really you under all of that nonsense?"  poor little guy.  he was really happy when i took it all off at the end of the night.^
^we bought these gummy letters for our glass door last year, and they are still going strong.  they were only 74 cents when we bought them!  they looked so awesome glowing in the light.^
^all of the excitement really wore this guy out.  once the trick-or-treating ended, we showered, put on our pjs, and cozied up on the couch with leko to watch the halloween episode of dancing with the stars (which of course is leko's favorite show).  he was so exhausted that he passed right out on ryan's lap.  it was the perfect ending to an awesome halloween.^

hope everyone had a happy halloween!
