Siviwe Anthony, Managing Executive of Legal Affairs for Vodacom South Africa, participated in a panel discussion at the 2024 DLO African Women in Leadership Summit in Sandton with the theme: “A Time for action moving beyond rhetoric.” The discussion explored the role of big businesses in driving diversity and looked at what some of these companies that took part in the panel are doing within their organisation to address diversity and inclusion. The panel members included Bonang Mohale (Chancellor of the University of the Free State and Chairman of The Bidvest Group Limited), Luna Nevehutalu (CEO Sanlam Structured Solutions), Vukani Mngxati (CEO, Accenture South Africa), Suzie Nkambule (CEO of Nafasi Water) and Bongumusa Makhathini (CEO of Primedia Out-of-Home). Research has demonstrated that diversified boards are beneficial to companies; yet diversity on boards, particularly for women serving on major organisations' boards, has lagged. Siviwe shared with the Summit, that to address the severe gender gaps identified in key disciplines, Vodacom launched the #CodeLikeaGirl initiative in 2017 to empower young women with valuable coding and other life skills, equipping them for jobs of the future and ensure diversity. Critically, she shared with attendees that: “At Vodacom, we are intentional about creating an inclusive and diverse culture that celebrates differences and achieves gender balance to improve overall business performance and stimulate business innovation.” #FurtherTogether
