She dials into the mobile banking services we’ve built with partners in Zambia to access funds quickly, either from her savings account or through an instant loan. Sharon was able to get fuel for an emergency in this way, without any paperwork, collateral or formal credit history.

Our Customer Analyst Zainab Anofiu is based in Accra. As a member of the Customer Insights team she knows how important it is for us to stay deeply connected to our partners’ customers' needs. Recently, Zainab's team completed one of their biggest customer research projects yet. ‘It has been incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact access to credit has on customers and their businesses across all of our territories,’ she says. ‘This project provided valuable insights that will help us enhance our financial products to better meet customer needs and preferences. I'm particularly proud of this project as it demonstrates JUMO’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction for the end users of our digital banking services.’ One of Zainab's favourite memories at JUMO is a productive and memorable work trip where she met her manager in person for the first time, which strengthened their relationship and made for lasting memories. Her top productivity tip? Stick to a routine. ‘It helps me stay disciplined,’ she says. ‘I also use work communication tools to stay connected with my colleagues.’ Outside of work, Zainab keeps life exciting by exploring a variety of interests, staying engaged and inspired by the world around her. Thank you, Zainab, for your dedication to customer service and the positive impact you make! 🌟 #JUMOShoutOut

🥳 Our Group finance director Gavin Matisonn recently celebrated 8 years of working at JUMO. ‘The grey hair is a lot more prominent, but working in such a vibrant, challenging, and positive environment has sustained my energy and enthusiasm,’ he says. No day is the same at JUMO, and Gavin loves that his role has broadened his experience into taxation, transfer pricing, and treasury, all intertwined with a healthy dose of financial structuring. ‘The challenges keep on coming, and you have to be running not to get left behind,’ he says. Gavin thrives on working closely with a number of people across the business. ‘We have developed deep relationships based on mutual respect and trust. Maintaining a sense of humour definitely helps,’ he notes. 🐾 In his spare time, you will find Gavin walking on Table Mountain with his dog, or on his vintage Vespa (…which he says is even older than he is). Gavin has also become fixated on his twice weekly strength training regime – the world has to be ending for him to consider rescheduling these sessions!

For Software Engineer Widi Oremo finding a good balance between work, life and growth is essential. Although he sometimes finds it difficult because those three can get in the way of each other! ‘I joined JUMO five years ago because I was looking for a place where I could write code, build tech and tech products. At the time I was still inexperienced and I was looking for mentorship. Since then I’ve learnt a lot about technical integrations and am able to ensure we are delivering stable, available features with good user experience for our partners’ customers. I’ve worked on launching the first and several other app-based interfaces as well as building a whole new integration with a mobile network in South Africa, from concept to launch in 6 weeks! Being based in Kenya is great as it’s a leading mobile money market in Africa, with over 75 million registered accounts as of 2023. This makes it easy to see the merits of working to enable digital finance and getting creative with the types of products on offer. Kenya is a beautiful country with diverse people and incredible geography. One of our biggest strengths is the human resource, with very high levels of literacy and a generation of ambitious young men and women. When mobile money started out the main use case was just enabling money transfer to the rural areas. However, now you can buy furniture or pay school fees and then cover your costs in instalments thanks to several pioneering products that have arisen from the success of mobile-based currency. I enjoy the challenge of keeping up with the fast pace of technological innovation. As a software engineer I need to ensure I have a relevant set of skills and knowledge and that means staying updated on tech innovations, especially in data and AI. Everyone needs to get AI literate to some level. Soon AI will be a core skill for getting things done. Any businesses that do not have it as a competence will suffer greatly. On the other hand, AI will likely drive a renaissance of some analog technologies and arts as people seek greater authenticity and digital detox. I like to spend time with my family and friends and catch up with Arsenal in the EPL over some Nyama Choma and Ugali.' #JUMOjourney
