About us
Manufacturing USA was created in 2014 to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing by connecting people, ideas, and technology. Manufacturing USA institutes convene business competitors, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to test applications of new technology, create new products, reduce cost and risk, and enable the manufacturing workforce with the skills of the future. The Manufacturing USA network is operated by the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, which is headquartered in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in the Department of Commerce. The office operates in partnership with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Labor.

The Manufacturing USA team remains inspired by the level of collaboration among manufacturers, researchers, and other advanced manufacturing industry partners. The Tennessee Manufacturing and Design Enterprise (TN MADE) is a symbol of collaborative advanced manufacturing innovation happening around the country in large, medium, and small manufacturing companies today. MESC 2024 | NAMRC52, hosted by SME and ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers). The United States Department of Defense's Adele Ratcliff said it best: "Manufacturing is life-changing!" Manufacturing drives career opportunities for communities and people across the nation, with nearly 13 million manufacturing workers across the United States. These jobs provide living wages. Workforce development plays a key role in ensuring that advanced manufacturing supports U.S. technological competitiveness and drives product and process improvements that advance the U.S. economy. All of the institutes in the Manufacturing USA network have ongoing workforce development initiatives. Learn more about them here: https://lnkd.in/e3fdkFyB
"#Manufacturing is life changing! It's life changing for communities that are using advanced manufacturing to grow their economies. Manufacturing can solve a lot of problems and create a lot of hope for our society, and I couldn’t be happier and prouder to be among your ranks. We’ve made a lot of progress; our job is to keep going. Just keep going."--inspiring words from United States Department of Defense's Adele Ratcliff at 2024 MSEC | NAMRC 52, organized by SME Manufacturing and ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers). IACMI and our partners are pleased to be part of the conference as speakers--Chad Duty, Craig A. Blue, Merlin Theodore, Michael Gomez, Mike Molnar, and of course, Tony Schmitz. It's been a privilege to represent #WorkforceDevelopment programs America's Cutting Edge (ACE) and #METAL at both the conference and Industry Night hosted at University of Tennessee, Knoxville's TN MADE facility. Plus we got to see people assemble the ACE air engine and show off the latest crown jewel of the ACE program, St. Cloud State University's mobile training unit! Exciting times!

The Digital Foundry at New Kensington outside of Pittsburgh represents a microcosm of what the manufacturing sector faces in reaching previously untapped populations needed to help close a projected gap of up to 3.8 million net new jobs by 2033. That is part of why CESMII built its innovation center, and ARM Institute provides funding for robotics-focused activities at the Digital Foundry. It is in a visible location with a 20% poverty rate so that people in the community would be curious about what was going on inside and want to learn more. The Digital Foundry demonstrates new technology to local manufacturers and offers training to current workforce and potential hires. Fulfilling the demand for manufacturing jobs in the Pittsburgh region will require removing barriers that traditionally deter underserved populations from participating in the manufacturing workforce, such as access to childcare, transportation, food insecurity, and job readiness skills. As it recruits participants for its workforce training, the Digital Foundry also works with local non-profit social service agencies to address these issues. Find out how other Manufacturing USA institutes are trying to fill the manufacturing talent pipeline through underserved populations. For example: ● CESMII also has partnered with The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to offer a Smart Manufacturing Certification in order to reach the local Hispanic population and grow the local smart manufacturing talent pool. ● PowerAmerica is helping provide solar and renewable energy workforce and professional training opportunities nationwide to underserved populations. They have trained students from 16 Native American Tribes and 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). ● AIM Photonics has an internship program where it partners with HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions to bring students to the institute’s Albany NanoTech Complex for 12 weeks. ● CyManII | Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute, has a Mobile Training Vehicle (MTV) that goes to local San Antonio high schools to work with primarily Hispanic students on cybersecurity training and e-sports competitions. ● LIFT, the institute dedicated to advanced materials, has a state-of-the-art 6,500-square foot immersive Learning Lab at its headquarters near downtown Detroit that prepares many African-American students for the most in-demand manufacturing careers.
