A new initiative from Power Africa, called the Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA) aims to "enhance health system resilience by expanding energy access and internet connectivity for health facilities across sub-Saharan Africa". In Mozambique, the program is working with both public and private sector partners to design and deploy market-based renewable energy and digital connectivity solutions for the nation's health system. Led by Abt Global, HETA is building on the progress made through programs such as the USAID Efficiencies for Clinical HIV Outcomes (ECHO) project. We're excited to get to work developing durable public-private partnerships and business models that not only support the installation of energy and connectivity systems, but help secure long-term funding for operations and maintenance —a key challenge for the sustainability of renewable energy access for health. #HETA #Mozambique #RenewableEnergy

🇸🇱 NEW HETA PARTNER | SIERRA LEONE 🇸🇱 We're thrilled to announce a new partnership between the Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (#HETA) and Energicity, via its subsidiary Power Leone, that will support health electrification and digital connectivity in Sierra Leone. 💡 Power Leone is the leading renewable energy utility in Sierra Leone, boasting a current portfolio of 54 solar mini-grids across the country. With support from parent company Energicity, Power Leone is building the energy and financing infrastructure to meet the growing energy needs of Sierra Leone's families, communities, and businesses. 🌞 Through this HETA grant, Power Leone is leveraging its ongoing efforts to establish 17 new solar mini-grids in Sierra Leone's Port Loko, Kambia, and Moyamba districts to provide reliable electricity to 17 health facilities and eight drug stores in the mini-grid catchment areas. HETA’s support is subsidizing the connection of these facilities into Power Leone’s mini-grid infrastructure. The Power Leone team is also collaborating with Africell Sierra Leone to introduce digital connectivity solutions at these health facilities as well as at 30+ health facilities connected to their existing mini-grid portfolio. Over the course of this grant, Energicity will contribute to key energy and health outcomes across rural Sierra Leone by: 🩺 Increasing the capacity to provide quality health services across communities. 💲 Reducing energy spending and greenhouse gas emissions for health facilities and drug stores that previously relied on generators. 💊 Increasing the quantity and variety of medication available to community members. 💻 Improving telecommunication capabilities across health facilities and drug stores for record keeping and patient outreach. 🏥💡 In #Kenya🇰🇪 and #Uganda🇺🇬, hospitals and medical centers are facing significant challenges stemming from frequent power outages. These facilities urgently require reliable sources of electricity to ensure consistent lighting, secure vaccine storage, maintain water provision, facilitate sterilization of medical equipment, and power essential appliances like ventilators and oxygen concentrators. To tackle these issues, our "Demand Side Management, Social Infrastructures, and Renewable Energy Expansion (DESIREE)" programme, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), is launching two groundbreaking initiatives. This award not only highlights but also encourages the early stages of the project, its potential, and the solutions it brings to enhancing healthcare in Ghana. ⚡️Cars cannot reach all patients; two-wheeled solutions are essential. ⚡️Power failures at hospitals pose risks to patients; solar power and batteries, like Ösa batteries (doubling as power banks), ensure reliable power sources. ⚡️Vaccines need temperature control; reaching hard-to-reach areas while maintaining the necessary temperature is a significant challenge, crucial for preserving the effectiveness of many vaccines and medicines. 💡 UNICEF Oxygen Plants powered by EM-ONE Solar Microgrids 💡 EM-ONE has recently collaborated with UNICEF Innovation team to develop a sustainable energy solution to provide reliable, renewable and affordable power to their Oxygen Plants-in-a-box in two major Nigerian hospitals as part of a pilot project. By providing uninterrupted access to energy as well as oxygen therapy, this project has the potential to save countless lives and improve the quality of healthcare services in Nigeria. 🏥 The synergy between EM-ONE’s and UNICEF’s work to power these oxygen plants in Nigeria with solar energy is still a small yet meaningful achievement in the journey towards sustainable and reliable healthcare in underserved regions. 😷 Hundreds of thousand patients 🏥 11 health facilities 🌍 4 countries ☀ 6 developers   The Shell Foundation Pilot Programme for Innovative Financing and Project Solutions Final Report is now available, published in collaboration with Odyssey Energy Solutions, Economic Consulting Associates (ECA) and Shell Foundation this week.    Through the pilot program, eleven health facilities across four countries were targeted by six project developers (Stella Futura, PowerGen Renewable Energy, Havenhill Synergy Limited, Nuru, ARESS, Zhyphen), serving hundreds of thousands of total patients.
