It's July 1st! It's National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month! Here are some statistics that you may or may not know: 📍Congenital facial differences affect about 3% of the global population. 📍Some common facial differences are cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, hemifacial microsomia, vascular malformations, and hemangiomas. 📍Cleft lip and palate affects approximately 1 in 750 babies born in the U.S. each year. 📍Magical Moments Foundation is the ONLY wish-granting organization in the country that serves children with all different types of facial differences! For this month, we will be sharing some amazing stories (and more interesting facts) of the AMAZING children we serve! Along with their stories, we will be hosting a simple fundraiser to help raise awareness about what our children experience. Below, you will see a calendar for July. This fundraiser is called Pick-a-Date Donation! It's easy - just pick a date and donate that amount! For example, if you pick July 1st, you can donate $1! TL:DR: Fat boys gonna run walk and roll – please sponsor me or take part and make it a competition. It’s for charity. Following a recent ‘step’ challenge at Optibus, I decided to push on in May – both to get fit and also to support a charity that has had a profound impact on my life. The ‘Marathon in May’ is a challenge to cover 26.2 miles during May by either strolling, running, rolling or cycling. I am participating with my daughter, Cariad, who lives with SMA type 1 and we will be strolling/pushing and rolling our way through the month (some ‘charity shop’ incentives may be used to get her out of the house!) SMA UK is a charity that supports individuals (and families) living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Back in the early 2000’s, at a time when children with SMA type 1 were ‘prognosed’ to live maximum 1-2 years, they advocated for Cariad, helped us challenge a ‘right to life’ case from our local hospital and ‘called round’ to identify a hospital in London who trialled a brand new way of managing the condition… which has now become ‘the’ template for all other children diagnosed with the condition. To give you an idea as to how good this is, Cariad turns 21 later this year – and many others now see their teens. I would show off the books, medical journals and papers focused on her and the treatment but I would bore you all. As a pay back, I have helped them whenever asked – including cool things like appearing on the BBC during right to life cases involving SMA (e.g. Baby MB… for those recall), but more usefully (but less cool) talking with newly diagnosed families, helping them get the resources they need and trying to show that dads of disabled kids are not all useless lumps! (mums are most often the super heroes when it comes to children with special needs). This June, little Hugo - 9yrs old - is going to walk 5km to raise awareness and funding for Fondation Sanfilippo Suisse at Race for Gift in Geneva. Sanfilippo Syndrome (MPS III) is a rare genetic condition that causes fatal brain damage. It is a type of childhood dementia. Hugo was diagnosed with MPS IIIA some years ago, a horrible disease that promises to steal him away from us. MPS III is caused by the lack of an enzyme that normally breaks down and recycles a large, complex sugar molecule called heparan sulfate. This heparan sulphate accumulates and causes damage to the cells of the body, particularly in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). FONDATION SANFILIPPO SUISSE, a Geneva registered charity, - Promotes all necessary measures to help families of children with Sanfilippo disease: a. Integrating children into an educational environment b. Caring for children at every stage of their lives c.
