When asked to reflect on her 21 years (and counting!) at Every Texan, Administration Manager Val Davidson has the following to say: "In the 21 years I’ve worked at Every Texan, I’ve had an inside look at the strides made to improve education and equity in our state. As a native Texan and a dedicated member of the Every Texan team, this progress fills me with great pride.  Of the many Every Texan contributions to a better Texas, I am especially proud of our internship program. It is a transformational, hands-on educational experience that cultivates emerging advocates and policy experts — many of whom are aspiring educators themselves. We see incredibly bright and passionate individuals come through this program every year. As they complete their internships, these rising stars carry their new expertise into roles that drive positive change in Texas and beyond. But, there’s one thing our interns and other learners should never have to carry: the inequities that come with accessing education of all forms. That is why Every Texan persistently advocates for policies and programs that improve access and equity in education. Our People’s Budget will do just that. Through people-centered, fact-based research and policy analysis, a coalition of partners across race, class, and gender, deep community engagement with everyday Texans, and a narrative shift supported by digital advocacy, we know we can impact change where it matters — in public policy. The IT industry is embracing partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to address the diversity gap in the tech workforce. Organizations like the North Carolina Department of Information Technology are spearheading this change with targeted internship programs for HBCU students. These programs are designed to offer real-world experience, aiming to integrate these students into the full-time professional sphere and enhance workforce diversity. With Black IT professionals significantly underrepresented in the sector, these intentional efforts by IT companies and HBCUs represent a strategic move towards a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. This collaborative effort not only benefits students by expanding their career horizons but also enriches companies with diverse perspectives and skills, driving innovation and inclusivity in the tech ecosystem. As I move into my macro policy specialization year at Louisiana State University, I am so blessed to annouce my fall internship. I’ll be working for the National Association of Social Workers’ Texas and Louisiana Chapters. There are 60 million workers in high-churn, low-wage jobs who are unable to access higher-wage work. According to our new research with The Burning Glass Institute, these are individuals who have gained valuable skills on the job, and could utilize apprenticeships to move into career pathway roles – if given the opportunity. This incredible talent pool wouldn’t just fill in-demand roles with qualified talent, but it would also increase diversity, equity, and inclusion as these workers are disproportionately women, Black, Hispanic, or living with economic disadvantages. For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken."
