🐝 Bee-ing a nature-positive business is more than just a buzzword. When +55% of the world's GDP is highly or moderately dependent on nature, it's obvious why it matters.
🤔Do you know how much your company relies on nature? According to research from the World Benchmarking Alliance less than 1% of companies can say for sure.
🐞 One way of increasing awareness is through engaging and educating each other, and inspiring action. Since 2012 we've maintained green spaces in our buildings, supporting different types of birds, bugs and more.
🏨 Last week we ran a workshop with URBAN BEES LIMITED to create bee habitats. As it says, we can’t mitigate climate change without restoring nature. Planting city roofs and creating habitats is a tangible way to restore nature for wild bees and other pollinators, and to increase biodiversity.
Did you know?
A Nature Portfolio study shows we cut down 15 billion trees annually! Since civilisation began, tree numbers have dropped by 46%.
Trees are essential: they cool the air, stabilise soils, provide wildlife habitats, and clean our air by storing carbon. Forests regulate our climate and support over two-thirds of terrestrial wildlife.
Trees also manage rainfall by spreading the effect of a rainstorm, allowing up to 30% of the water to evaporate back into the atmosphere directly from the canopy. In the UK, birches support over 500 invertebrates, oaks support 31 mammals, and hawthorns support up to 300 insects. Birds rely on trees for food.
Preserving and expanding natural spaces is crucial. By planting and maintaining more trees, we can create a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations. This video shows our owner volunteering in London to preserve urban trees and outdoor spaces, which reduce heat, improve air quality, and enhance well-being.
Natural Distinction helps businesses adopt sustainable practices. Let's protect our planet and #PlantMoreTrees. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today. 🌿

I am so happy the Shared Value Work that I spearheaded is a finalist in the Shared Value Project awards in Melbourne.
Can't wait to see friends at Arup tomorrow night and meet the other finalists
Having worked in the corporate space for a while, understanding how business operates and what they need to make pro-social decisions was critical in envisaging this evidence based research "Biodiversity in your backyard" and levelling up Conservation Volunteers Australia's partnership work.
It's wonderful that this work is now a finalist in the Climate and Nature Category of the Shared Value awards and on going conversations post the initial involvement of these entities at launch are being held with Transurban and Coles Group
Understanding each others respective strengths and value was the key to getting our shared value relationship up and running with Arup's Sophie St John (when at Arup) we asked ourselves the question "what if 30 per cent of the available green spaces in cities and towns could become areas for nature and biodiversity?" With the borrowed resources and expertise of Arup we examined the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and created in-depth research that told of the potential space for nature 187 hectares, which was subsequently launched at the second Conservation Volunteers Australia C suite Forum for "Leaders For Nature". A forum that I formed in 2023 to elevate CVA's conversation to the C suite. It was at the third gathering that we launched the research outlining how the attending corporates could scale their response for nature and the environment.
🦅 In Australia, 500 threatened species intersect with cities, highlighting the need for habitat conservation and restoration in urban areas. Individuals can play a crucial role by restoring their backyard, contributing to the creation of urban habitat corridors. This effort, combined with government and organisational actions, could help conserve biodiversity and thus help achieve the 30% restoration goal.
The Biodiversity in your Backyard report, identified optimal locations for habitat corridors in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, with the potential to cumulatively create 127 hectares of habitat through restored land, equivalent to 178 soccer pitches.

FINALIST PROFILE: CLIMATE AND NATURE SOLUTIONS
Congratulations to the Conservation Volunteers Australia and their partners for being a Finalist in the Shared Value Awards Climate and Nature category.
Using the knowledge and might of corporates, and building an army of everyday volunteers is a brilliant combination for Conservation Volunteers' "Nature Blocks" program. It provides the knowledge and know how to create habitat corridors in 1x1m spaces in backyards, balconies and workplaces to create natural sanctuaries for native species to address the loss of biodiversity in urban areas.
The science based program led to the creation of "Leaders for Nature" and a cohort of C-suite leaders committed to driving the environmental solution through their businesses and has also paved the way for a new program of "Urban Shade Forest".
It's exciting to see corporates like Arup, Bupa, Coles Group, AIA Australia and Transurban getting behind this.
Our judges say... "great ideas often get stuck as small scale individual change making, but this combines the might of business to explode the potential impact, well done"
Wishing the Conservation Volunteers Australia team (and their partners) all the best at our Awards Night on May 9th.

World Environment Day:
Time for Restoration
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is the world's biggest environmental event. This year, the focus is on land restoration, highlighting the importance of healing our planet's ecosystems and combating desertification and drought.
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent and reverse ecosystem degradation. Land restoration plays a vital role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting biodiversity, and ensuring the well-being of all.
Many organizations and individuals participate in World Environment Day through events, cleanups, and educational initiatives. Here are some ways you can get involved:
Plant trees or support organizations that do.
Reduce your consumption of resources like water and energy.
Choose sustainable products and practices.
Spread awareness about environmental issues.
By taking action, we can all contribute to a healthier planet for ourselves and future generations.
