As we recognize our many talented interns today on National Intern Day, I want to offer some career advice, which is the same advice I provided to my own children. I always remind myself to keep my options open. I tell my kids: picture your future as a storage facility, where all doors are open. The doors close based on the decisions we make, so it's important to consider the impact of each decision on our future opportunities. For example, when you choose a college major, by nature that impacts which doors remain open and which doors close. So, as you embark on your internship journey, I encourage you to think about how you're keeping your options open for the future. Whether it's pursuing a master’s degree, accepting a job, volunteering for a stretch assignment, or making a choice about which career path you’ll take, always think about how your decisions can impact the opportunities available to you tomorrow. This past summer, I had the pleasure of welcoming a summer intern to the Take Roots Consulting team. From the get-go, it was clear he was not just here to do the work; he was driven by curiosity and a genuine eagerness to learn. His inquisitive nature shone through—he wasn't satisfied with just knowing 'what' we were doing; he wanted to dive into the 'why' behind our actions. It was refreshing to work with someone, at such a young age, not only creatively talented but also deeply curious about the reasoning behind the tasks. Never lose that sense of curiosity. It's a powerful tool that fuels not only creativity but also a deeper understanding of the work you do. Keep asking questions, keep seeking to understand 'why'. This fall semester, I had the opportunity to work and intern at Rave Energy in Dallas, TX as a Business Development Representative. This company had a great culture, starting with its very charismatic CEO, Tarek Chowdhury. This company deals in business-to-business transactions ranging from electricity rates, to technology solutions, and data management. This experience helped me gain a wealth of knowledge about client acquisition, development, and retention.            During this internship, I had the opportunity to work with several types of businesses such as restaurants, retail shops, hotels, and many other types of industries. I focused on how to connect with business owners to help educate them on our company's services and how they could save money by switching over or agreeing to have a contract in place to protect against inflation. I had many methods of connecting with business owners such as using warm leads and calling over the phone, using email lists and going door-to-door. Once I had successfully convinced a business owner to a meeting with my supervisor, I would have to prepare contracts and appointments for an eventual close.            Nearing the end of this internship, I have completed over 10 transactions after meeting with hundreds of business owners. This internship was enriching as I helped small business owners in the DFW area save money on their utilities and generate income for the firm that hired me for this internship.            In conclusion, this internship was invaluable in terms of my personal and professional growth. This opportunity showed me how business is done in the real world and what business owners consider a priority daily. #UTDBSFIN  #hireJSOM

I’m Not Here to Serve You Coffee! The room went silent as the new intern's bold statement echoed through the open-floored office. Everyone from their cubicles around the office turned sour, murmuring, “Back in our day, interns knew their place and did what they were told. No questions asked.” Then he walked away to the printer and grabbed the printed forms; as he walked through the angry, and murmuring faces, he could feel the weight of their stares on his shoulder. But here’s the twist: “Break the chain.” Internships have evolved. The days of fetching coffee, printouts, and packages should be behind us. These menial tasks diminish the drive and undermine the capabilities of our emerging talent. Imagine the potential we squander when we reduce internships to glorified errand runs. It’s time to reshape our expectations and allow these young professionals to flourish.  in roles they’ve been preparing for, roles that demand their intellect and creativity. Stop the cycle. 🌟 Exciting Announcement! 🌟 Delighted to present the extraordinary journey of Nischal Olety Nagesh as he takes us behind the scenes of his impactful internship at Cummins Inc.! Nischal interned at Cummins Inc., a Fortune 500 company, in the summers of 2022 and 2023, taking on IT operations roles. In 2022, he served as an IT Analyst Intern. This included refining PowerBI Dashboards to monitor KPIs, highlighting data's role in strategic initiatives. In 2023, he served as a Network Services and Analyst Intern. He configured virtual environments, set up Cisco network switches, and evaluated new IT hardware, deepening his understanding of network infrastructure. This immersive experience broadened his understanding of network architecture while providing tangible skills for managing and optimizing digital infrastructures. Nischal proactively sought internships since his freshman year, applying and supplementing academics with practical projects like website development for local businesses. Networking experiences, including conference participation, facilitated a connection with a Cummins recruiter, leading to an interview opportunity and ultimately securing his internship role. The hands-on exposure to networking, data analytics through PowerBI, and the corporate environment bolstered Nischal's technical and soft skills like effective communication and teamwork, solidifying his readiness for future IT career endeavors. Ultimately, his internship at Cummins served as a catalyst for professional development, equipping him with the requisite tools and experiences to thrive in the dynamic information technology landscape. Throughout Nischal's internship at Cummins, his academic background and extracurricular engagements supported his success, built his skills and distinguished him during the interview process. Interactions with IT professionals and leaders at Cummins provided Nischal with invaluable insights and perspectives about the industry. Finally, recognition of his final presentation was a gratifying acknowledgment of his efforts. Envisioning his future trajectory, Nischal perceives his Cummins internship as a pivotal stepping stone. The hands-on experience fortified his readiness to tackle IT challenges, embracing exploration and eagerness to delve into emerging technologies. He anticipates further growth during his forthcoming May 2024 internship. Offering advice, Nischal emphasizes striving for excellence amidst AI's influence. He underscores standing out, mastering one's craft, networking to forge connections and gain perspectives. Navigating opportunities vigilantly, maintaining an updated resume, proactive engagement, and seeking peer mentors for guidance are essential strategies for success in the dynamic IT industry landscape.
