Recognizing a larger concern of unregulated outflows of capital, the IFSCA has approached the Ministry of Finance and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to explore regulatory changes that could facilitate the establishment of family offices in GIFT City. Humour in Government Recently the Supreme Court has struck down the electoral bond scheme on the ground of lack of transparency as well as in not providing a level playing field to the political parties. So we are back to the old system when most of the funding of political parties came in anonymous cash donations. Was that more transparent than the electoral bond scheme which mandated bank transfers with rigid KYC requirement (of course the name of the donor was not to be disclosed to protect him from possible harassment by rival political parties)? Let's recall the JMM bribery case. The MPs had taken huge amount of cash for their support in the confidence vote and had shown the money as collected in the form of small donations of Rs 100 or so. As far as the question of level playing field is concerned, in our system the ruling party is always expected to garner more funds. The figures show that while the BJP got about Rs 6500 crore but even single state party like TMC got more than a thousand crore. BJP is not merely the ruling party at the centre and a majority of States but is a much larger political force than the INC which also got about 10 per cent of total funds. We have a classical case of throwing the baby out with bath water. Good has been sacrificed in search of the elusive best. Similar to what happened in the case of NJAC.

Are cooperatives a failed model in Nepal? Or is it the people running them? News of cooperative frauds have become a quite regular. Amounts usually in billions. Most allegations relating to how the board or the management team has been using the funds of the members for their own personal gain. And how this unfolds is pretty similar. Many cooperatives have not called for annual general meeting for years. So, the members and depositors have no clue regarding what's going on. And when depositors have to withdraw a large amount, these cooperatives usually succumb. When one depositor is denied he tells others and that's how everyone comes to know about the problem. Until then everything looks hunky-dory. Then depositors file cases, few people get arrested. Most people seem to abscond and may be they already have some political connection and protection. Yes, many accused seem to be related to one political party or the other. And that may be the reason why it takes years for the investigation to conclude and resolve the actual problem.
