Over the years, people have asked me something similar to: what is the value of personal development work? (some know neither of Marc Benioff nor of Tony Robbins, and see no value putting attention in this direction) My current view: the unfolding landscape for both business and government requires increasing adaptation, for responses suiting the times. Someone said to me last night: they are putting less and less weight on the idea, and more and more on the team's ability to pivot. Within this context, I would liken the human being to a flexible plumbing system, flexible in the sense of a collection of garden hoses joined at various points along a central, vertical axis. Just like for a Ferrari, we want the space within clear, so things flow well (without interference). And this is especially important when we join our plumbing to other's, to function in a team for a larger purpose.

Over 1 million people have completed Working at Heights training since 2015, yet why do injuries and deaths from falls continue to occur? Today, Ontario's updated working at heights training standard takes effect. Anyone who completes this training will learn new information and skills. The update is an improvement in my opinion. The standardized training is also backed by research from the Institute for Work & Health that found 1) participants retained knowledge 2 years after completing training, and 2) the types of injuries covered by this training dropped by 19%. But as this updated training rolls out today, it's important to remember: training is just the foundation, not the total solution. More can be done to eradicate falls from heights - stronger emphasis on site-specific instruction and training, greater reliance on engineering controls, more public awareness, and a commitment by organizations approved or authorized to deliver this training to uphold the integrity of this standard, plus more. Falls are still happening despite progress, but to impact further change, we need to expect more. #WAH2024 #WorkingAtHeights #HealthAndSafety #Ontario #Construction
