I had the pleasure of dining with 2 moonwalking astronauts: Harrison “Jack” Schmitt and Dave Scott, as well as Dr Andry Thomas Australian astronaut that flew on the space shuttle and visited both MIR and the ISS space stations. They all signed my photo of an Apollo launch that I had built. How did I make the meeting happen? I set my goal on doing it and created several actionable tasks to ensure I had the possibility. I networked with the right people. I joined the right groups. I built my rocket 🚀 … We created a business promoting commercial space opportunities. We invited the astronauts to come to Australia to help us… If you want to reach your own ’sky high’ goals, you need to do the same. I can help you plan everything. DM if you want to discuss your goals with me and how I may be able to help you reach them. PS: Individual photos are in the comments.

Axelent honors its safety pioneers, and today we focus on modern pioneer, Ellen Ochoa. Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer, former astronaut, and former director of the Johnson Space Center. While at Sanford and later at the Sandia National Laboratories and NASA, Ochoa developed optical systems for performing information processing. She patented several optical systems, including those to detect defects. Her work would be used in space exploration, and in 1993, she became the first Hispanic woman to go to space. She would spend over 40 days in space throughout her career. After the Columbia space shuttle disaster in 2003, Ochoa would recognize the need for inclusion and open discussion to prevent future disasters. In an interview with Standford University, Ochoa said, “In a culture where people don’t feel like someone is going to listen, it’s hard for people to speak up, even when safety is at risk. In the aftermath of Columbia, I spent a lot of time thinking about what we could do to make every member of the team feel that their thoughts and perspectives were valued and respected, not just because it was the right thing to do, but because if employees didn’t feel they could speak up, the safety of our people was compromised.” Ochoa would take apply these beliefs to her time as director at the Johnson Space Center, overseeing the work on the spacecraft Orion, which has the ability to carry a astronauts deep into space. #axelent #safety #machineguarding #machinesafety #industry #safetymatters #standards #safetywebinar #safetyfirst

This is odd. A first for one of the most coveted jobs in the past. Feels like I am watching a “For All Mankind” episode. This is a great start and opportunity for them to open up the program to a larger pool of candidates. Fighter pilots were the first choice in the past, testmpilots a plus because the stress, danger and manual nature of the space travel was way greater. But #spacex “leave the driving to us” automation, know how and getbthe job done has outpaced even the most veteran NASA and aerospace industry alumni in this business. There are other up and coming startups as well contributing to safe, easy and now, comfortable travel to high earth orbit and beyond missions. Diversity in space of potential astranautsnis critical today and into thenfuture, not just the obvious, but even in experience.

🚀 Dream Big, Think Beyond 🚀 Just got back home from an inspiring trip to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex with my kids. This July 4th, I'm reflecting on the spirit of innovation and exploration that defines our nation. Standing in the presence of the statue of Rear Admiral Alan B. Shepard Jr. alongside all the brave astronauts that followed, I'm reminded of the incredible courage and vision it takes to reach for the stars. "We have dreamed big, ventured on wild seas, lost sight of the land a few times, and found stars to guide us on our journey. We expanded our horizons and learned lessons." – Tom Milner, Space Shuttle Engineer. These words encapsulate the essence of what it means to be a pioneer, to challenge convention, and to think beyond the confines of our small world. As we celebrate Independence Day, let's also celebrate the spirit of curiosity and determination that drives us to explore new frontiers. Everything I'm building at Handy Famm is inspired by these same principles, fostering creativity and hands-on exploration in the next generation. It's about encouraging young minds to dream big, to tinker, and to build a future where innovation knows no bounds. (Although, unlike the astronauts, I’d prefer to let my Handy Famm Eye spin around, not me! 🤮) May we continue to dream big, expand our horizons, and inspire future generations to shape the world—and beyond—with bold ideas and fearless exploration. #July4th #IndependenceDay #KennedySpaceCenter #DreamBig #Innovation #Exploration #ThinkBeyond #HandyFamm

Nigel Packham, Associate Director, Safety and Mission Assurance at Nasa Johnson Space Centre delivered a compelling presentation at the 12th Annual Focus Network - OHS Leaders Australia Summit 2024 about the "Management of Risk, Land, Sea and Air". Assessing safety in human spaceflight poses a unique challenge, it's certainly not safe. Instead, organizations like NASA adopt a pragmatic approach, focusing on whether an action is "safe enough" rather than entirely risk-free. This entails identifying and mitigating potential risks to a level deemed acceptable, often quantifying them in terms of likelihood. For instance, while the risk of losing a crew in spaceflight typically ranges from 1:200 to 1:250, early missions like STS-1 in 1981 carried a higher estimated risk, between 1:1,000 and 1:10,000. This presentation explored risk management strategies across diverse industries, drawing parallels and distinctions with those employed in human spaceflight. #ohsleaders #OHSLeaders #ohsdirectors #safety #workplacehealthandsafety #leadership #safetyatwork #focusnetwork #forums #ohsleadership #innovation #sponsors #sponsorship #focusnetworkevents #speakers #keynotepresentations
