Work Together Wednesday: Week of the Young Child through a behavior lens 🔎 When children work together, often times conflict arises. So what do you do to ensure each child is heard, seen, and valued while supporting their development? ⭐️In moments of conflict in your classroom, change your mindset from “just stopping the behavior” to “an opportunity to teach”. See moments of upset in young children is an opportunity to teach a new skill. Remember, behavior is a form of communication! ⭐️Stay away from asking children “Why”. Asking “Why” innately sets people up to play defense including young children. Instead asking leading questions that start with “How” and “What”. This keeps children’s brains in a calm state. My favorite question to ask during children’s conflict is “What else can we do?” ⭐️ When children feel disregulated it’s important to remember they have triggered their fight or flight response. You have lost them until you help them co-regulate. Instead of pushing your expectations on them, acknowledge their feelings, remind them of their safety, and connect with them through warm touches (if allowed - if not provide them an area in the classroom away from others where they can go like a Safe Space to cool down). #BehaviorSpecialist #WOYC24 #ConflictManagementWithKids #NAEYC #EarlyEducation #ConsciousDiscipline #ConnectionBeforeCorrection #BehaviorIsAFormOfCommunication
