The countdown is on: less than a month left in my HR internship. I thought HR was all about paperwork and boring meetings. But I was wrong. Every day, I’ve learned that HR is about people. It’s about making sure everyone feels heard and valued. Sometimes, it's making tough decisions. Other times, it's celebrating small wins. But every moment, it's about connecting with people on a deeper level. I’ve seen firsthand how a simple "thank you" can light up someone's day. I’ve learned that feedback isn’t just about pointing out mistakes. It's about guiding someone to be better, to reach their potential. Being part of a team means supporting each other. It means laughing together during lunch breaks and working through challenges side by side. As my time here winds down, I’m grateful for every experience. HR is more than just a job. I learnt about Performance Improvement Plan as a Human Resource Intern. A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a valuable tool in the realm of Human Resources. As an HR intern, you might find yourself involved in the creation and implementation of PIPs to help employees enhance their performance. A PIP typically includes: 1. **Identification of Performance Issues:** As an HR intern, you'll assist in identifying specific areas where an employee's performance is lacking or not meeting expectations. This involves conducting assessments and gathering feedback from managers and colleagues. 2. **Clear Goals and Expectations:** You'll help define clear, achievable performance goals for the employee. These goals should be specific, measurable, and time-bound, providing a roadmap for improvement. 3. **Supportive Resources:** Part of your role may involve ensuring that the employee has access to the necessary resources, training, or mentorship to meet the PIP goals. 4. **Regular Check-Ins:** You may help schedule regular meetings between the employee and their manager to monitor progress, provide feedback, and make any necessary adjustments to the plan. 5. **Consequences and Timeframes:** A PIP should also outline the consequences of not meeting the goals and specify a timeframe for improvement. 6. **Fairness and Legal Compliance:** It's crucial to ensure that the PIP is fair and complies with employment laws and regulations. Don’t be so humble all the time. Do this instead: Take pride in your past experiences and accomplishments. Stop saying things like: “I was just an intern” “I am just a college student” “I am just a entry-level employee” “I don’t have any value to add to conversations” Start saying things like: “I am starting my career with enthusiasm to deepen and grow my skillset” “I was an HR intern that successfully led 5 corporate HR initiatives” “I am a college student that is actively plugged into the industry” “I have value to add in meetings” You were selected for an interview for a reason. You earned that degree for a reason. You work in a job for a reason. You worked hard for a reason. Being humble can be a strong character trait, but knowing where to give yourself full credit is the key secret for career growth.
