𝐄𝐗𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘: 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂 𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝑨𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒕 𝑏𝑦 Annie Nelson 𝐊̲𝐞̲𝐲̲ ̲𝐓̲𝐚̲𝐤̲𝐞̲𝐚̲𝐰̲𝐚̲𝐲̲𝐬̲:̲ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: Even experienced professionals face hurdles when changing fields. Boot camps alone are insufficient; opt for programs offering comprehensive career services like resume/interview prep and networking support. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: Avoid course hopping and chasing certificates. Prioritize subject matter expertise over "fun detours." Annie's book provides a clear and effective roadmap (wished I had read it before my bumbling journey a year ago). 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦: Manage conflicting priorities and realize there's no single course guaranteeing a first data job. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Build a strong home team for encouragement and guidance. 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Learn how to build a portfolio, find data sets, level up projects, and present findings. Numerous project ideas are provided in this book to kick-start your progress, so there are no excuses! 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫: The importance of requirements gathering, focus, and "getting in the zone" are emphasized as crucial skills for data analysts. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭": Job search and interview prep are recognized as challenging, but this book provides valuable hacks and strategies. 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐈𝐧: Learn effective networking and connection techniques on LinkedIn. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Gain insight into the tech interview process to set appropriate expectations. 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬: Valuable guidance on navigating recruiter phone screens and identifying interview scams is included. 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋𝐋: Annie's book offers a comprehensive and practical roadmap for transitioning professionals seeking a successful career in data analysis. It addresses challenges, provides valuable tools and strategies, and emphasizes the importance of soft skills and networking. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤: Only thing missing from the book are the new IDE's that make sharing code easier. Consider 𝐴𝑧𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐷𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑜 and 𝐽𝑢𝑝𝑦𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑁𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠 for documenting SQL projects. Yes, Jupyter is not just for python anymore. There are more notebook-style SQL tools emerging, so I encourage Annie and other analysts to get familiar with them for sharing their SQL code as part of their workflow (like those python devs already do).
