In 2011 July 8th, I defended my 4 years PhD thesis about the role of impaired metabolic pathways (glyceroneogenesis, #insulin and #leptin resistance) in #obesity and type 2 #diabetes onset. As a month of awareness, let’s pay attention to all diseases (stroke, hypertension,…) associated with #metabolic #syndrome that our continent is suffering from… « #Africa is not only about #infecteous diseases… » as I told once, to an #institution head… At that time, my ambition was to provide expertise on #metabolOMICS, an emerging and promising field, from bench to bedside. #Covid19 pandemic demonstrated an undeniable link between #metabolicdisorders and #comorbidity. To my #scientist community, #metabolism & #infection, a new field to explore… #basicscience #preclinicalresearch #clinicaltrials #therapeutics

As we continue to celebrate women during International Women's Month, it is important to reflect on women's health, particularly here in Africa, where the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer is increasing. Over the past two decades, the proportion of deaths in Africa due to NCDs has risen from 24% to about 37%, with several cancers significantly affecting women.   I had the opportunity to be on Channels TV this International Women's Day, where we discussed how cancer remains a major global health concern, responsible for nearly 10 million deaths worldwide in 2020. In Africa, NCDs are projected to surpass communicable diseases as the leading cause of death by 2030.   Preventive measures such as avoiding tobacco and alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and getting vaccinated against HPV and hepatitis B can help reduce the risk of cancer. Early detection through symptom awareness, access to diagnostic services, and timely referral to treatment can significantly improve outcomes.   In Nigeria alone, about 12,075 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, resulting in 7,968 deaths. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Nigerian women aged 15 to 44, with a significant percentage attributed to HPV infections.   It was an engaging and insightful conversation. Every human has the right to clean accessible water. 🚰 However, our reality is such that the ideal world is tainted by water affordability, accessibility, acceptability and availability issues, causing multifaceted crises in affected areas. Throw in the effects of load shedding 🔦 , climate change 🌎 , a tanking economy 💸 and poor public health infrastructure 🏥 , we are faced not only with lowered quality of life, but also the constant struggle for survival. And whilst we are hopeful that we can continue to be ahead of the curve as much as possible, we also have to be open to adapting to the consequences of water restrictions. What could that adaptation look like? How about community-led water management and sustainability, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 6? Follow Design for Good and ITPC as we embark on this journey together, to elevate community responses and to push forward an iterative solution for good water management practice. 🚿

The recent African Business Coalition for Health webinar on "Global Perspectives of Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH): Discussing Trends for a Healthy Africa", took an exploratory turn as panelists shared diverse perspectives on the different ways to improve the quality of MNCH practices in Nigeria. Spain includes Chagas disease in the national prenatal screening program “The Ministry of Health of Spain will provide this program through the common services of the National Health System, and it will be fully implemented by the regional health systems in two years for all pregnant women considered at risk. The program is aimed at pregnant women who were born or have been in endemic or affected areas of Latin America, but it is recommended to extend it to newborns and family members. 👨⚕️ 👩⚕️ UKRAINE´S LARGEST NCD NATIONAL FORUM ADDRESSES PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES ❣ GFA, alongside partners such as the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the #PublicHealth Centre of Ukraine, hosted a significant #NCD (Non-Communicable Disease) National Forum in #Kyiv on November 14-15, 2023. The event, part of the #ACT4Health project supported by #Swiss Development Cooperation, aimed to combat NCDs in #Ukraine. Approximately 200 participants, including government officials, WHO representatives, World Bank, UNICEF, national NGOs, and regional health administrations, gathered to discuss NCD challenges. 🚑 Despite Ukraine facing war, #COVID19, and an economic downturn, vulnerable groups struggled to access vital medicines. The #Act4Health project established mobile medical teams and home-based care teams, focusing on an integrated approach to prevent NCDs through lifestyle changes. The cost-benefit analysis demonstrated substantial returns on investment in NCD interventions. The forum covered various NCD management aspects, including community engagement, school involvement, and technology utilization like artificial intelligence and telemedicine. It emphasized the urgency of addressing NCDs and their risk factors, including smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol misuse, physical inactivity, and excessive salt, sugar, and trans fat consumption. In essence, the National NCD Forum highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to protect present and future generations from the impact of NCDs in Ukraine. This book examines several important topics, such as the societal factors that cause SCD to spread, the effects of stigma, the overall psychosocial cost of this common disease, and the quality of life for children who have the disorder.
