The Fashion Industry extremely values growth But evidently keeps hindering it's own progress Last week I had the opporttunity to meet an African Emerging Fashion Designer based in Copenhagen. We spoke for about an hour, mainly about her life and journey so far as an emerging fashion designer. I got to see the world from her lens and picked up on her values of craftsmenship, which were evident from her open mindedness and eagerness to learn; - Putting herself through a top class fashion college - Taking on 4 interships at well establshed and recognised brands She came across well connected to her roots, adding the perspective of growing up in the Southern Region of Africa before moving to Denmark, which she channels and pours into her work with vibrant colours and fine print. Designing with sustainability in mind, her approach and focus is on reducing waste through reuse of materials. Following our conversation, I took the time to look at the design teams at 83 Fashion Brands in and around Copenhagen. Not one, had a designer that looked like or to be of a similar background to the fanstic designer I had just connected with. In these times where the fashion industry is experiencing an ongoing transition towards a more sustainable approach. Fashion brands need an added perspective and different experiences to support them in the direction the industry is growing. D&I is not D&I for the sake of it. In fashion today, we need ideas, and ideas come from people drawing from their experiences and knowledge. This is important for us all. I am inviting London and Copenhagen based emerging designers and Fashion Brands that are committed to environmental and social impact to join TRL Fashion Space. The challenges the industry faces take an effort of coming together and moving in one common direction. Aimed at change makers TRL Fashion Space shakes up; - Sustainability - uniting two forces with awareness and commitment to building a brighter fashion future. - D&I - increasing representation in the fashion industry, by bringing together different perspectives and different experiences on one brave mission. It's not just about an opportunity; It's about a community of change makers, an alignment of voices and a push for impact. I achieved a distinction for my research project ( thesis ) on garment/object emotional attachment and sustainable fashion integration for my final year at Middlesex University London. A standout aspect of my project was the development of innovative styling guides. These guides demonstrate how consumers can create multiple outfits from existing pieces, potentially reducing the need for frequent purchases and promoting a more sustainable wardrobe. I'm immensely grateful to my mentor and senior lecturer, Vlad Morariu from the Visual Cultures department at Middlesex University London. His guidance was instrumental in helping me articulate my ideas and craft a compelling narrative around consumer psychology and emotional integration in fashion. This journey has been incredibly enlightening, and I'd like to share some key takeaways: - Emotional durability is crucial for sustainable fashion. My research revealed how fostering emotional connections between consumers and their clothing can significantly reduce waste and overconsumption. - Brands like #Patagonia and #Levi's are leading the way in sustainable practices, demonstrating that it's possible to balance profitability with environmental responsibility. - Consumer psychology plays a vital role in shaping purchasing behaviors and product longevity. Understanding these psychological factors is key to promoting sustainable fashion choices. - Innovative approaches, such as styling guides, can help consumers maximize their existing wardrobes, reducing the need for constant new purchases. Looking ahead, I'm thrilled to that I got to learn about : - Exploring how brands can foster emotional connections between consumers and products - Investigating the role of technology in promoting sustainable fashion choices - Collaborating with forward-thinking brands to implement emotional durability principles This project has solidified my interest in the intersection of consumer psychology, emotional design, sustainability in fashion, and marketing communications. The Power of Empathetic Co-Creation: Radically Disrupting the Fashion Design Process I am pleased to announce the successful completion of my first semester in the Master of Arts program "Sustainability in Fashion and Creative Industries" at the AMD Akademie Mode & Design in Berlin. This journey has already been incredibly enriching, especially the lecture "Strategic Foresight and Sustainable Digital Transformation" with Prof. Dr. Ingo Rollwagen, in which I collaborated with my colleagues from Mexico, Karla Ríos, from the USA, Aerielle Rojas, and from Greece, Venetia Chatziapostolou. Our efforts culminated in a concise poster that summarizes the dynamics of empathic change in the fashion design process, which we believe will be critical to the success of fashion designers, brands and consumers in promoting a sustainable fashion industry. Empathically, co-creation empowers consumers to become co-creators and challenges traditional notions of power and ownership in fashion. Our research explores the disruptive impact of co-creation on the traditional fashion design process, documenting its evolution over the past decade and forecasting its future development.  Co-creation represents a paradigm shift in the fashion industry as it empowers consumers and encourages collaboration between all stakeholders. By embracing co-creation, the fashion industry can move towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and innovative future.
