Let’s Get Behind School Rugby Throughout the course of this week, the National Schools’ Rugby Sevens will see over 14,000 players in over 1000 teams compete in a variety of competitions. Some are here to win it, some aiming to progress further than before and others participating for the experience. Whilst Rugby is addressing legitimate challenges, it is also a game that continues to capture the imagination of large numbers. The era of compulsory rugby is long gone, and these children are participating because they love the game. It never was a sport for everyone, but continues to be one which enriches the lives of many, providing lifelong memories and friendships. There is something captivatingly attractive about Rugby, though its leaders are curiously reluctant to articulate its benefits more widely. Those of us who have been positively impacted by the game have to be more vocal in our support: the modern game is a niche experience, with unique benefits and challenges. But, those who love it, love it as much as they ever did. Let’s get behind school Rugby - and lifelong friendships

Is International Rugby "more intense" than other competitions? The common perception is that the international code is physically more demanding than club rugby. Research from Peter Tierney, Ph.D et al, suggests that may not necessarily be the full story... Collision Count and Collision Loads are at their highest in the INT game. But Total Distance, HSR, and HMLD are comparatively up in competitions like the Champions Cup, URC/Top14, and the British & Irish Cup. This would suggest there is less space available at international level due to higher skill levels, defensive structures, tournament tactics and style of play. Due to the significant increase in Collision count and load, specific preparation is required for higher collision demands at higher levels of competition. And for Performance staff, this has significant implications for how players are trained at specific levels of the game. WOW! Wheelchair Rugby is Growing & Female participation increased by 36%! We have just finished compiling our participation results for last year and we have compared them to the year before. In simple terms wheelchair rugby is growing. GBWR Participation Statistics: Last years stats compared to the year before. - Overall membership grew by 13% - Female players increased by 36% and there are now over 100 female players! (114 to be exact) - 1 new international referee - well done Dale - 18% increase in the number of players in the Paralympic league - 3 new teams entered the WR5s league, which has 4 leagues. The next Rugby World Cup should be held in Asia or the Middle East. The 2023 Rugby World Cup in France has been a great success, and so will future editions in Australia and the USA. However, none of these tournaments will be anywhere near as successful as the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, which broke several records: • It achieved a ticket sell-out rate of 99% • Generated nearly £4.3 billion in economic impact • Increased social media viewership five-fold from 370 million viewers in 2015 to 2.04 billion viewers in 2019 So why are officials only hosting the RWC in prominent rugby nations like Australia and France? Instead, upcoming tournaments must be held in Asia and the Middle East to engage with an entirely new fanbase and grow the sport. #rugbyworldcup #sportsgrowth #sportsbiz
