What is culture, and what do we mean by it? Culture means different things to different people, and means different things in different companies. I know what I strive for, though and what I respect. Recently, I had the privilege of witnessing how Dr. Hatti captures and relays culture at Suburban Research Associates an Atlas Clinical Research site. Over many years, Dr Hatti has built and then evolved what his vision of shared stand on how we treat patients, each other, and our partners. I've never seen anything quite like it. It's rare to see someone codify with such clarity, and such love what their work means. Dr. Hatti took the time—really took the time—so that everyone who works there understands how their contributions make a difference. Seeing this has reaffirmed my belief in the power of culture. When done right, it can inspire, motivate, and bring a sense of collective ownership. I love my job... #Leadership #Culture #Inspiration #Teamwork

Timely topics with lively debate covered; ·      Patient focussed drug development –‘No decision for me without me’ ·      Introducing New Technologies: Optimising pathways to improve population health ·      Artificial intelligence to design new drugs ·      Innovation in R&D: The birth of breakthroughs ·      Data Driven Medicine: The NHS as a strategic partner in Life Sciences ·      Improving global health outcomes through clinical innovation Galien ensure meetings like these drive global debate on health and the importance of raising public awareness, allowing significant time for discussion between panels and audience.  In the UK as we navigate the near 24/7 election coverage, one welcome question sparked some thought provoking answers;  ‘What would the panel put on the manifesto for the [new] government?  . ‘there is much more to do on health inequality – uptake of innovation is low in those populations that are already chronically underserved’ ·      ‘there is an overwhelming need to focus on prevention among all stakeholders in healthcare as the system cannot sustain the more traditional treatment approaches’ ·      ‘Create an Innovation Adoption association – Innovation needs to be better coordinated with matching budgets’ ·      ‘We need to work to predict people’s individual health trajectories by using AI intelligently to help us manage the limited resources available’ This may have been a UK focussed meeting however these responses illustrate the challenges faced more globally. For this #wellbeingwednesday let’s use the book, “How Doctors Think” to better understand our own #professionalwellbeing. Author Jerome Groopman shares stories of triumph and failure that he, or peers, experienced practicing medicine, sharing the three A’s of major thinking traps. Anchoring error or anchoring bias occurs when a physician overly relies on or gets "anchored" to a specific piece of information about the patient's condition (usually the initial presenting symptoms or test results) when making diagnostic and treatment decisions. Doctors can also experience anchoring on a colleague's opinion by placing too much weight on the opinion of a senior colleague or specialist.    Strategy: Seek alternative explanations and independent reviews. Avoid asking leading questions or starting with your own hypotheses when working with others. Attribution error refers to the cognitive bias where medical professionals make inaccurate judgments about the causes of a patient's condition or symptoms based on inherent biases or stereotypes. There are two main types of attribution errors in medicine: 1. Fundamental Attribution Error occurs when a physician attributes a patient's condition or behavior primarily to internal/personal factors (like personality, attitude, or lifestyle), while underestimating the influence of external/situational factors (like environment, socioeconomic status, or access to care). 2. Ultimate Attribution Error is when a physician makes dispositional attributions about a patient's condition based on characteristics like race, gender, age, or socioeconomic status, rather than objectively evaluating the medical evidence.    Strategy: Recognize personal biases and consider external factors. Actively seek out objective data and challenge your assumptions based on a person or situation’s demographics. Availability error refers to the tendency of physicians to overestimate the likelihood or importance of something based on how easily examples or instances come to mind. For instance, if a doctor recently treated several cases of a rare disease, they may overestimate the likelihood of the next patient having that same rare condition. Another example, vivid, dramatic or emotionally-charged cases tend to be more memorable and available in a doctor's mind, skewing their risk assessment compared to more mundane or routine cases.    Strategy: Use evidence-based guidelines and objective data. Create an environment where cognitive biases can be openly discussed without judgment. To increase your professional wellbeing, pick one of these strategies and put one it use over the next 30 days. Something I’ve been implementing - ask three questions before sharing my opinion.
