April 2024 The Naukri JobSpeak Index, a key index of white-collar recruitment in India, stood at 2643. It remained flat compared to the previous month (March 2024). At the same time, compared to April last year, it declined by 3 percent. However, overall job market sentiment has seen some improvement. There has been an increase in recruitment in sectors like hospitality, oil and gas and FMCG. Non-metro cities continued their strong performance, leaving metros behind. At the same time, the demand for senior professionals has increased. The demand for experienced candidates has seen a good growth on an annual basis.

More demand for senior professionals
The demand for experienced professionals remains in high demand. The demand for candidates with 13-16 years of experience has seen a 9% year-on-year increase. At the same time, there was a strong growth of 21% in the recruitment of people with more than 16 years of experience. However, entry-level hiring has remained low in contrast to the strong demand for experienced professionals.
Hospitality sector recorded strong growth
Due to growth in travel and tourism, there has been a strong growth of 16% on an annual basis in the jobs available in the hospitality and travel sector in April 2024 as compared to April 2023. In big urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, positions like Front Office Manager, Housekeeping Supervisor and F&B Service Professional are in high demand.
Job growth accelerated due to oil and gas sector
The oil and gas sector provided 15% more new jobs to people on an annual basis in April 2024. There was strong demand for personnel such as petroleum engineers, drilling engineers and product operators. Most of the appointments in this sector took place in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Jaipur.
FMCG sector is dependent on rural demand
Due to increasing demand in rural areas, there has been an 11% increase in recruitment in the FMCG sector in April 2024 as compared to April 2023. In this sector, the highest demand came for posts like Sales Manager, Supply Chain Executive and Brand Manager. Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai had major contributions to this growth.
Demand for skilled people in AI and ML
While the IT sector employment rate saw a modest growth of 2% year-on-year in April 2024, jobs related to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning continued to grow rapidly. In these, a growth of 19% was recorded in appointments as compared to last year.
Mini metro city should be ahead
During this period, mini metros remained at the forefront in terms of providing new jobs, while the pace of growth in the metropolitan cities was stable. Non-metro cities like Ahmedabad (growth over 10% annually) and Vadodara (growth over 8%) have emerged as hotspots for new hires. Whereas, the job growth rate in metro cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Pune has remained stable.
