⚔️ 🎸 How Being a DIY Concert Promoter Made Me an Entrepreneurial Thinker 💡🧰 When I was 17, I accidentally became a key contact for touring punk bands looking to play in the Boston area. ☠️🥁 How it started was, I booked a one-off, all-ages, show for my band and our friends and it was a huge success, filled way over capacity. I even added a legendary NY hardcore band as a headliner. Word spread that I knew how to draw a crowd 💃🕺 and my friend Al Quint had his heartbeat on the local music scene. 🎼🎸 So, Al submitted my name and phone number (which was my parent’s house!) in Maximum Rock and Roll, an infamous punk magazine. Within a few days, my parent’s phone started blowing up, which they didn’t love... So, in between classes, I had to use the lobby payphone at my high school to negotiate artist guarantees with agents and bands that were more experienced than I. By the time I completed my freshman year at BU, I had booked and negotiated over 150 events in my parents home, on payphones, and in my dorm room with legends such as Fugazi, The Bosstones, A Tribe Called Quest, and many more. I made 💩 for money but I learned some solid business and marketing lessons that I could have never learned in school such as, * Approach negotiations with a win-win perspective. * Fight up, not down. * If it seems like it’s too good to be true then chances are it’s gonna suck. * Harnessing momentum is a skill. Do you have some lessons in your early career that you still use? (I made this flyer ⬇️ in art class lol)

Looking forward to watching this documentary! ‘Unsurprisingly, the year dual cassette decks became available, 1982, marked a low point in sales for the music industry. The subsequent creation of digitized CD technology not only gave the industry the lifeline it needed, but it soared their profits to unimaginable new heights. Two factors played into that: the companies’ ability to persuade fans to buy their entire collections again in the new format, and the sky-high prices they set for CDs, which often cost twice as much as vinyl releases or cassettes. Making the companies even richer was the profit margins on the new discs. A CD that sold for $15 cost less than $2 to manufacture. More, the companies kept raising prices on the discs through the 90s. Such extreme greed seeded a level of resentment among fans that came back to bite them big-time with the advent of file-sharing. “Most kids think of the record industry as the Capitol building filled with guys with cigars sitting at their desks,” said Stapleton. “You don’t think about the assistants and receptionists and all the people at the bottom who would lose their jobs in layoffs because of practices like this.”’ - via The Guardian (https://lnkd.in/ezexptJJ) #musicindustry #musicbusiness

Experienced Social Media Strategist | Elevating Brands with Engaging Content & Vibrant Community Building | B2B & B2C
Big News in the NBA World! 🏀 Fourteen NBA teams are facing lawsuits for using music without permission in their social media posts. Teams named in the suit include the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers. Independent music publishers are seeking up to $150,000 in damages for each infringement. The music industry is taking a stand against unauthorised use of their work. Publishers like Kobalt Music Group and Notting Hill Music are part of the group filing these suits. Artists such as Cardi B, Jay-Z, Meek Mill, and OutKast are at the centre of this issue. This development is a crucial reminder for all of us in marketing and branding. It's tempting to use trending audio for that viral moment. However, it’s vital to ensure we have the proper rights to avoid legal trouble and protect our brands’ reputation. Always prioritise legal compliance over fleeting trends. The potential costs—both financial and reputational—are too significant to ignore. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/esPC2_qc #MusicRights #BrandManagement #MarketingTips #NBA #SocialMediaStrategy #LegalCompliance #TrendingAudio #DigitalMarketing #ContentCreation #BusinessEthics #NBAnews Credit SI.com for the Photography
