Have you seen Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with Will Ferrell? Besides being a riot, it's one of my favorite movies because of the message: Winning is cool, but it sure ain't everything. As a relatively impatient person who gets so competitive watching college football games that my puppy has to leave the room because he doesn't like loud voices, Ricky's quest to be the best resonates with me. "If you're not first, you're last," was his motto. I've felt this way many times in my life (as I imagine maybe we all have at least once). If we give all the effort, all the blood, sweat and tears and STILL come up short, isn't it the same as coming in last? For me, it used to be. I remember feeling SO crushed when I didn't "win" whatever the prize was in my mind: the promotion, the raise, the award, the gold star from my boss. But, like Ricky by the end of the movie, I've found that the journey to the finish line is where we learn. There are lots of lessons I've learned from coming in short. Lessons about myself, my workplace, my manager, or otherwise. All valuable. I used to tell my kids (and still do even now that they're grown), that good things CAN (and do) come from bad situations. We learn about ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes, our response to a given stimuli. I've also come to realize that what's meant for ME will be for ME. I don't have to chase the prize -- as long as I work hard, when it's my time for the prize, it will be there waiting. So, here's to a 2024 full of learning about ourselves through the journey, whether we finish first -- or last.
