The last time that I participated in a Flag Day was likely in my secondary school days. Last Saturday, I volunteered for Cheng Hong Welfare Service Society Flag Day. Below are my observations - Parents, regardless of their gender, are often more inclined to be generous as they aim to set a good example for their children and promote positive behaviour. - Females are more willing to donate than Males. - The majority of those who donated are elderly, and seldom do I see younger folks coming to me. - Many donated $2 notes, some even $10 notes. Those giving coins, they typically give multiple coins. I deployed a mixture of waiting and identifying who could be more willing and asked, "Would you want to donate?". Most of the time, they will stop and donate when they are being triggered. While it seems easy, this job is not easy for those who place ego and pride before self. When kids donate to me, I kneel to their level to allow them to drop their notes or coins. I need to ask for donations and face rejections. I have also seen people who point their noses at me, possibly seeing this as a degrading task. Fortunately, these are those minorities, and most people are kind. When you encounter the tin bearers who collect donations, please be kind to them. It is a challenging task, please donate if you can and offer words of encouragement to keep them motivated. #sgsunnyday #volunteering #chwss

To Reach the Unreachable: In many communities, persons with visual impairments who cannot make use of guide dogs are often isolated and unaware of the support services available to them. The presence of our practitioners is crucial for finding and helping these members of our communities. Isn't it odd that while charities encourage people to discover the joy of volunteering in their community, the justice system uses community service as a punishment? Or that a headline-grabbing policy in what promises to be a gruelling next few weeks is to give 18-year-olds the choice between community service or a year in the army? #Volunteering is a social activity, it broadens the mind and helps the community. But to equate it with punishment and compulsion? Mixed messages! To all who would hold power: how about a serious national conversation about encouraging volunteering across all generations? About how to sustainably support charities with national and local policy to help the most vulnerable in society? Maybe even asking charities what they've learned about, you know, actually solving stuff?

Would you like to make a lasting impact on your community and help the homeless and vulnerable in your community? Imagine a property portfolio that is a community asset?
