"Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance." — Verna Myers
Have you ever stopped to consider if your brand messaging truly reflects the diverse world we live in? It's a vital question, especially for marketers aiming to connect authentically with their audiences.
Over the years, I’ve seen (and helped) many medium-sized businesses and nonprofits embrace the transformative power of inclusive brand messaging.
Ensuring your brand is inclusive is not just a trend; it's a necessity. When people see themselves reflected in your brand, it fosters a deeper sense of relatability and loyalty. Here’s why it’s crucial:
1. Authentic Connection
Representation matters. Whether it's through photos, videos, or illustrations, being purposeful in your selection of diverse media helps people from all walks of life feel seen and valued. This goes beyond race and ethnicity to include age, gender, abilities, and body types.
2. Inclusive Language
Language is powerful. Using inclusive language, which includes pronouns, shows respect for all identities. It signals that your brand acknowledges and values everyone’s experiences. For example, instead of "he or she", try using "they" when gender is unknown or irrelevant.
3. Broader Reach
Inclusive messaging broadens your audience. When your brand speaks to various communities, it opens up new opportunities for engagement and growth. People are more likely to support brands that reflect their values and experiences.
NOTE: Being inclusive is different from trying to reach everybody with your messaging, it’s simply an effort to acknowledge people in your audience who may not fit your ideal personas but are still valued supporters, customers or clients. This also means that you shouldn’t choose diversity for a few extra dollars because your audience can spot a fraud.
If you’re ready to ask your audience to dance (and mean it), send us a message so we can help you put your best foot forward.
Fire & Bliss Creative helps values-driven businesses and organizations develop communications and marketing strategies that attract the right clients and donors so you can sleep well tonight and continue to grow tomorrow.
