59%. That's the number of Black Women who want to be top executives, according to Lean In. It also reinforces what we know. Black women leaders are more ambitious than other women at their level. And according to the Lean In data, they are more likely than other women leaders of other races and ethnicities to receive signals that it'll be harder for them to advance. 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️ Many, myself included, have received and experienced these signals in our career journeys. Black women in leadership are my main focus. I enjoy speaking about how we can show up authentically as who we are in the workplace. How do we become comfortable in different roles within a company? And how can we get past the fear of being treated unfairly in these roles? Black women should know that it’s okay not to be perfect and that within these roles we are still human and make mistakes.

The other day, I came across a Facebook post that stung a little to read. Prepare yourself for this… It read, "Working with black female managers, 0/10 do not recommend." Ouch! For a moment, it felt like a personal jab, as if someone had given me a Google rating without knowing anything about me. As I scrolled through the comments, I found a mix of agreement, disagreement, and sadness echoing my own feelings about this narrow-minded narrative. In light of this, I find it crucial to recognize and amplify the voices and experiences of Black women in leadership roles that I've been incredibly fortunate to have worked with in my career. These women didn't just guide me professionally; they invested in me personally, advocating for my growth, challenging me to excel, and embodying authentic leadership every step of the way. People like Michelle Biggs, MCLC, ACC, MScHRM 💐 , Jamilla Greely MHRM, PHR, SHRM-CP 💐 , and Nichole M. Henderson 💐 have left an incredible mark on me and countless others. Truly exceptional managers, leaders, and mentors who also happen to be Black Women. As I've risen to roles in leadership myself, I've made it my mission to emulate the kind of leadership that these incredible women demonstrate. I pride myself on fostering meaningful connections with teams, supporting employee development, and serving with grace and gratitude. Because to me, leadership isn't about race or gender—it's about lifting others up and creating a culture of empowerment and inclusion. Let's challenge harmful stereotypes and uplift the successes of Black women who are breaking barriers and reshaping industries every day. By changing the narrative and advocating for true equality and representation, we honor the legacy of those who paved the way before us and pave a brighter path for generations to come. Longtime member, Imani is excited to bring her passion for community and empowering diverse voices into her leadership role! She envisions the future of Soapbox Women to be a flourishing, united community across the United States! Learn more about Imani and her plans for SBWOC below! What inspired you to apply to be part of the Soapbox Leadership Team? As always, the people. I attended a networking brunch and met lots of incredible women who were all welcoming and friendly. The community I felt in that one event really made me want to be a part of this organization in a deeper way. What are some ways to further empower and amplify the voices of women in our industry? There are so many ways we can help build each other up: develop relationships with the women around you, help each other grow, make sure a space is safe for everyone to speak up, and lift each other up both publicly & privately. What are some ways your lived experience contributes to who you are today? As a visibly Black queer woman, my identities inform how people interact with me. I love being a Black queer woman. I love our history, our culture, so I always make sure I bring that perspective with me everywhere. What are you hoping to accomplish during your time in your current leadership role? My biggest goal is to get the good word of Soapbox out to everyone who needs it. I'm really hoping to at least help in the increase of Texas members, New York members, Chicago members, etc. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? "Pursue a career in a field you want to learn about for the rest of your life" What are some reasons a safe space like SBWOC is important to you? In our industries, there aren't a lot of opportunities for women of color to get together and talk about our experiences. So many us stay silent or act alone, and having this space to support each other is so important. What's been your favorite experience since stepping into your role and what's been your biggest challenge? I’ve loved getting to know the other SBWOC committee members. They’re all such phenomenal women and I love serving on this team with them! The biggest challenge so far has been not living in California and having to miss out on meet-ups. I’m planning on coming over soon though! What would you tell someone who is looking to get involved in Soapbox Women? This space is everything you're hoping it is. Everyone is kind, welcoming, thoughtful, and hilarious. This is the community you’re looking for. These are the allies you’re looking for.

There is so much I can comment on regarding this article and this post. But this line of the post stands out the most: “YOU can redefine leadership, and create environments that value, rather than stifle, our gifts. …if it doesn’t exist, create it.”
